Shite Favourite Roads

Driving home tonight I got to thinking about the best little-known roads to drive. This is beacuse on the back way home from work there is a road that allows you to drop behind (almost) any car then gun past on the wrong side of the road as they take this bend at about 20 mph, even in a 1 litre Metro.

It may not have the length or views of the snake pass but the road between Friday Bridge and Outwell in Cambridgshire is the one I like best

The A16 in Lincolnshire is a great road, lovely scenery and no nasty hills for the old cars to struggle up.

The A4 between Marlborough and Hungerford is quite a fun road to hustle big old cars along at high speed, especially late at night at weekends when nobody uses it :)

Torridon to Diabeg is the maddest road in Scotland.

Bealach na Ba is good in a car, but better on a bicycle :-D

I like the A830 also, because I drive it all the time. It even has a shite song about it!

"

He was driving up to Mallaig Glenfinnan by Lochshiel
Heading for Lochailort content behind the wheel
The road was getting narrower the sign said slow
It’s the Highland daily dodgems it’s the 830

There is a natural assumption that A roads are wide
Enough to take a car and one the other side
Tourist information will never ever tell
It’s like driving through heaven on the road made for hell

For it’s a single track you can’t turn back
the stories are all the same
Of tourists leaving Corpach and never seen again
Don’t go on the 830

There’s a joke in the Highlands
it’s called a passing place
Where French stay for chips and Italians stay for days
When lorries lose control you’ve one last wish
Don’t let me die under twenty tons of fish

For it’s a single track you can’t turn back
a nightmare without end
It’s eyes ahead for Nigel Mansell’s
waiting round the bend
Don’t go on the 830

Whoever called this road a road is telling little lies
The 830’s a sheep track in very thin disguise
Italian caravanettes driving on the right
Meeting Wallace Arnold coaches in the middle of the night

Of the man who’s stopping progress
a theory’s gone around
That he owns the biggest breaker’s yard
this side of Mallaig town
You can see him in the gloaming
towing wrecks from where they lie
And he turns them into girders
for the bridge across to Skye

For it’s a single track he’s in Mallaig
and now he feels no pain
He’s dumped his car he’s in the bar
he’s steaming back by train
on a single track you can’t turn back the morals very plain
It’s grand to visit Mallaig but it’s safer by McBrayne’s
Don’t go on the 830"

Kidderminster to Brecon is a Gr9 65 mile cross country blatt, of which many parts are properly entertaining at legal speeds.

Craig: is it the same stretch of road in the photo as in the map?

Castle Douglas, Scotland, take the A 713 North towards St. John`s Town of Dalry past Loch Ken. South of St John`s, turn left on to the A712 follow past Clatteringshaws Loch and on to the juncion with the A 75. Quiet and delightful.

Skipton Old Rd, running from Colne to Skipton via the village of Carleton can be a lot of fun. Don't need massive amounts of speed to enjoy it, lots of changes of direction and pretty scenic too. Nice challenge to do it quickly and very enjoyable.

The A835 - A837 Ullapool to Lochinver road is pretty good.

Straights, twists and turns, amazing scenery - what's not to like?

I quite like the A68 from Edinburgh, through the Borders, Northumberland and continuing into Durham.

The surrounding area is very rural and peaceful looking.

I see a lot of Scottish roads here, and my choice is also in Scotland, the A849 on the Isle of Mull towards Iona.

A4069 from Brynamman to Llangadog (actually most of the A-roads in Wales between the M4 and the A5 are pretty decent, when not blocked by snow (winter) or caravans and motorbike crashes (summer).

A396 from Exeter to Dunster.

The B4192 from Swindon to Hungerford is a cracking alternative to having a black 3-series up your arse on the M4.

Soz no pics.

Ullapool - Gairloch - Applecross

No real overtaking possible as it's mainly single track, just awesome roads and views.

After purchasing my Lancia in Edinburgh earlier this year I took it straight up to Ullapool to drive round these roads.

I had fun down there in my 156. I dumped the undertray from it in a big commercial bin in a layby in Ullapool :)

I was going to say that, used to love going up that road to Edinburgh on a Friday night to see the girlfriend (now wife).   In a TD cavalier you could do most of it flat out.   It's where I found out that speed cameras go off even if you're going in the opposite direction.

For 7 years my journey to and from work was the B4391 Migneint Pass:

Scenic, quiet and great to drive.

Although often hit by the weather - see how much snow had stuck to the car by the time I got the chains on!

A350 between Warminster & Poole. Do it at 5am, it's deserted, lovely stretch of road

A30 from Penzance to Lands End. Can't compete with Scotland for drama but it's a lovely sweeping, undulating A road which, as a result of cycling it all my life I know every pot hole and tiny foible. Late on a dry winters night it is so much fun. Added jeopardy of zero visibilty caused by constant fog and 10ft Cornish hedges makes it even better.

In summer at Minack theatre chucking out time you might as well be on the Holloway road mind.

These two rascals are my faves. Nice and twisty so perfect in the X1/9.

Basically most things north/west of Glasgow can be a hoot.

Borders can be fun too, but there's a fair few folk down there. A701 and a708 (moffat to selkirk) are a hoot

Cat and fiddle was fun(but frustrating at the same time)
