Yet another Volvo collection thread

So... shortly after acquiring my 760 Turbo another blue, turbocharged Volvo saloon appeared on the Autoshite facebook page. It was 350 miles away but I made tentative enquiries anyway expecting nothing to come of it. It had short tax, short test and was far away. "Meh, someone'll take it" thought I.

Naturally, October 27th saw me, Dave Fowler of this parish and Garfield boarding an EasyJet flight to Bristol...

... which was uneventful, if a little shoogly into Bristol - apparantly there was a storm or something going on. We all disembarked and awaited the Volvo's arrival. Garfield started getting excited.

They were late, we were early; a brief scout around turned up some heavy goods shite and a skanky Nissan. Nothing much else to report other than Bristol Airport is fuggin' tiny.

So, 350 miles from home; only one thing for it.

Stopped for a quick munch and a better look at the purchase. All in all, a suitably shitey Volvo.

Welcome to Fuzzyvision! by davidfowler2000, on Flickr

So, threw it at my tame MOT tester this week and it failed on brakes - the pedal travel was to the floor which was causing concern, and the rear pads were down to the metal. Greased slide pins sorted the pedal travel, new discs on the rear and pads all round saw a fresh 12 month ticket issued. To celebrate I taxed it, but now I am very poor so it's back to running on LPG after a stint on pez to clear it's tubes.

It has a couple of dents on the bodywork but it was a 178k Volvo picked up for more or less scrap money so I'm not going to complain. Next steps are a timing belt and a fuel tank strap; belt is of indeterminate age, the tank strap is starting to corrode slightly so probably worth sorting. It's now done about 600 miles in my ownership and I'm suitably impressed at how solid it is underneath and how well it drives.

Epic my friend - great thread well done!!  I often frequent that easyjet flight (and experience one of my least favourite airports on this isle) but haven't driven back for a while!!!  Top drawer!!

Nice story Andy, not many tat collections begin with a plane flight!

What's the Lolvo count at CMS towers now?

Thanks to DF for the piccies!

Three; thankfully Eddy took that white 940 Turbo estate 'cos it was nearly four...

The 760 will be departing after parts recovery as some of the welding would be hysterical if no bugger had actually put their name to an MOT certificate for it.

Having seen said Gas powered Swedish saloon in the metal I can confirm a suitable level of jealousy... The tweed interior is lovely too.

Top Volvoing!

Sweet purchase there Andy! You must have about 4 LOLvos now at cms towers? I know how dangerous buying multiple cars can be. The weekend before you dropped my Sterling off to me, I had 3 Rover 800s. Once I had the Sterling it became 5 as I'd also bought the D-reg 820E.

Ace collection thread, despite the worryingly rapey facial expression....

I can also confirm that this looks the dug's baws in a wet & dark car park. Sounds like a Volvo should too, top shiteing. :)

Great thread and getting a pic of Yosser Hughes is a bonus that alone must be worth the journey.

Top work!  It's worrying how easily we can accumulate cars, isn't it?  But please, why oh why (BBC) didn't you at least let me know you were passing!

Didn't actually think... poor show on my part, sorry! Dave and I were both working the next day and I also had to pick my better half up from work so it was kinda rushed. Boo and indeed hiss!

I challenge you to a blue K registration Volvo 940 saloon WAR. Which is shittest, turbo diesel on veg or petrol on LPG?

I've been to Bristol Airport, it's like a bus station- and not a big one.

LPG is great, it's a real novelty watching the litres advance faster than the pounds. If you have an Android phone you can download an application called FillLPG that shows nearby filling stations and gives prices- mostly up to date too. With a bit of forethought you should never have to pay more than 70p a litre. One thing to watch is that approximately 30% of LPG pumps are broken at any given time.

A gas powered 940 must be about the best real world car there is.

Nice one.  The only drawback for me with those turbo'd Volvos is the fuel cost - LPG sorts that out so I say GR9 purchase.

Which was going slowest - the Merc T2 or the Dodge Commando?  Wouldn't fancy taking either on a motorway tbh.

Top stuff. I especially liked the Boys from the Blackstuff reference :D

Great stuff, looks very tidy bar the zip tie.  The 740/940 range do have a very indestructible look about them, it's an itch I might have to scratch one day.  A white 940 estate with LPG seems like a very sensible purchase.

I had a white wentworth turbo 940 estate. It was utterly fab. No lpg though. Not that I really cared. That car could shift for it's size.

Top Ovlov buying escapade.

I'm probably preaching to the converted here, but I reckon the RWD volvos are the ultimate shiteist's car, one of the few bangers you can buy for a few hundred quid and expect it to still be going in 5 years time. I Love em. I got as far as advertising my 240 for sale then changed my mind. I'd miss it.

I saw one of those modern Shitroen things smashed up on the verge on the A14 near Copdock the other day. It was pink & white too! Hats of to you Andy, you must be the King Shitter in all of Scotlandshire

Epic tat-collection thread with plenty of GR9 pictures. The view from the rear with the spoiler looks very nice indeed. Much love for these Volvos, my dad had a 940 saloon and estate virtually one after the other. The saloon had a boot spoiler despite it being a 940 SE (I still have the handbook for the saloon, it was originally a rep's car for Greenwood Air-Vac)

On a side-note, Bernard Hill lives in my town and I've seen him quite a few times walking about, presumably looking for employment.

I'm going to have to lay the blame squarely at this thread. I now have a serious urge for another 740 or 940 turbo diesel.

Good thread.

I just don't like this shape Volvo though. I don't like the updated headlamps - I think. I really cant get on with it. Much prefer the earlier 700 series ones visually. But that's just me and wouldn't it be a shame if we were all the same.

...however the S35 from Glasgow - Bristol departs at 2215. I wasn't due to finish work until 2235. In the end flying was the cheapest option.

I've owned The Volvo for ten years in December, and although I have had a love-hate relationship with it over the past decade, I can no longer envisage a time that it won't be part of my life :)
