Brussels we're looking to phase out the Euro 5 (or 6) diesel cars, which caused my Dad to sell his car, however, apparently they went back on that decision and still let those cars.

I have read that is the same for all Belgium cities that were have an emission zone. That was one of the reasons we are looking for a Euro5 or 6 petrol. Some Dutch cities have still not relented on Diesel bans.

Eruo5 or 6 Petrol is at the moment the best option to gain access to any ULEZ type zones in Europe. That may change.

Oh one of our local taxi drivers has just purchased a KIA estate that is a Hybrid, with a diesel engine. Spain thinks that is acceptable to enter low emission zones. It is classed the same ans a petrol hybrid. Go figure

Have you bought a car yet?

This really is a slow burn of a collection thread. 😄

Tomorrow is the first day of car hunting.

Wife needs to get anew passport. After that going to look at

Volvo V50 1.8 Sport. Wife thinks that these are very expensive for the year.  Nearly 10k€ for a 2009 with @130000km.

Renault Megane Estate 1.6. half the price of the above for a 2012 same sort of kms

Toyota Avensis Wagon  again a bit of an expensive one 2011 for just over 9k€ and 168000km

Ford Focus Wagon 1.6 EcoBoost. 2013 with 155000kms for a 6500€

Maybe look at a 2017 Pug 3008 automatic for around 7to 8k€ I cannot remember the price.

Yes!

I want to see a collection thread that lasts an entire month before a car is revealed.

If I remember correctly, the 1.8 engine in the Volvo can use oil and the 1.6 in the Ford is also a not good engine?

Nice but I have got a VW Polo on rental that is the dash. I said that in the post.

So you can repeatedly post on a car forum, you can use the internet to find cars for sale in country that you don’t live in and you probably booked your travel to that country on the internet but you can’t use a search engine to find a manual for the hire car?

Or are you just so miserable that you manufacture things to moan about?

Brussels, on the other hand, €350 fine - no passes -I think if we go there then it'll be by train :-)

Er, yeah, you'd think that. But there are a few UK-reg'd diesel vehicles running about on SORN around Brussels, like this fine specimen of Diesel Vauxhall Astraness I papped in late August 2024.

I'd guess that they've also go no current registered keeper over here on DVLA so the Brussels people* cannot send the fine anyplace. There was a moderate proportion of the UK expats/seasonal workers where I was in France that would do something similar - until the Gendarmes started vehicle checks and, if you had no papers, they'd simply seize the car. Often that'd leave you stranded miles from anywhere. Funnily enough - they always ignored my 1968 Land Rover but they'd pull the 1989 Rang Rover every time.

*may also be the case that the civil administration handling the LEZ cannot access the Police National Computer (or whatever the Belgians use?) TfL cannot access the UK PNC so have no way of flagging up repeat offenders on the London LEZ so that Plod can pull them over

I'd moan too tbh - what's wrong with just leaping into the hire car, three pedals, couple of steering column controls - that's it, we're off.

No - these days - it's like the Krypton Factor. Just getting all four doors and the boot open fails me. Then work out how you get the bloody thing started. Leave the in car entertainment (ICE*)  alone as it will really boil your blood. Finally, we're off, hurtling down the Autobahn at 150kmh - no, 99kmh as it controls speed, shakes the wheel, nags you using a weird combination of lights and symbols.

3008 gets my vote.

*ICE - I was just going to use that (ye olde) acronym until I recalled that it's been repurposed in this century.

That and of course Brexit/GDPR rules etc and so on.... It wouldn't be feasible or cheap or easy for them to even try and access vehicle keeper information from either side.

This Astra m, I guess will keep on plodding until it gets a tug from the local Police who'll most probably seize the car if no paperwork is forthcoming.

As I can access most stuff on the phone/email, I'll ensure it's easy to access in case I get a pull.

The results are in .

The object of today was to start the wife's passport renewal application. Some of it was previously done online. Today we had to go to the town hall. to finish off the application.

We did not test drive the cars, as it was our intention to keep local and for me to show the wife what is what, all from a list I had drawn up

The wife hates the look of the V50. Never got to see inside it. It was too frosty thus a bit iced up. No more hunting for them.

Renault Megane Estate was ok and had more room in the luggage area than we first thought. Those tapering rear cabin makes it look small. The same dealer had several other cars which maybe of interest. The issue is all of his stock comes from Germany. We looked at purchasing in Germany but found there are no good bargains* to be hand. Must be that they sell theses to the Dutch, then there is a mark up. These German cars do not come with any history.

Toyota Avensis Wagon  Way too big for just us two

Ford Focus Wagon Rubbish. It did not have Dutch plates and was waiting to be imported. It had damaged tail lamps, part of the rear bumper did not sit correctly and a few other dents and scrapes.

Never got to see the Pug.

I have learnt that a lot of engines have design faults.  I wonder why it is so hard in this day and age to produce a good engine without problems.

On Tuesday (tomorrow) off to visit a Peugeot specialist to have a look at several PSA cars.

This seems like a good buy at first glance. 1.6 petrol which maybe is a good and simple engine? and low mileage. The only thing is that maybe it is a little too basic for some and the engine might not be big enough for you. But is smaller than an Avensis.

Went to the garage today . And some of the stock is a bit disappointing.

Went to view 4 cars. in the end test drove two 3008. Yes I know they have the terrible THB engine, but some design changes later in production made them way better.

One of the 3008s was manual the other was automatic. I do not want an auto now.

The one in the image below is a is our preferred choice from this garage.

3008.thumb.jpg.2b7e46de27837aeb3f4d5f3db0382828.jpg

The car is not perfect. The car has been on the forecourt since April last year. Thus the tyres have flat spots. The head lamps need buffing. The radio is not coded into the car. It bleeps all of the time. The main remote key cover needs replacing. There are some minor scratches on the paint and  very minor wheel damage. The rest of the car is OK and these points can be sorted out without major surgery.

The plus points for this car is we sit higher and getting in an out easier. The inside is very clean. The gearbox is better than the Megane. Panorama glass roof.

The disadvantages are it is older the distance KM are almost equal. The ride is firmer, but not hard like a VW.

The other car we saw is very different. This was at another garage.

megane.thumb.jpg.f523f3c40aeb79af640076ac79b44e01.jpg

This also has some recertification to be done. Some deep gouges in the plastic trim over the rear arch beside the rear seat. Minor scratches all over teh paintwork.

The advantages are the engine is Euro 6 hopefully future proof. The ride is very nice, just like one would expect from a French car. This is a 1.3 DCE so the various oil issues of the 1.2 have been removed

Disadvantages are  that the gear changes was more clumpy. The electronics have not got the best reputation. The timing chains have a reputation of not lasting. The salesman was not so pleasant to deal with.  No glass roof. The quality of the interior trim is not of a great standard.

Do not know if this is an advantage or disadvantage, the car was a company car. The state of the inside makes it look like the employee did not give a shit about his car. However, we can expect that the car was maintained to the service schedule and with Renault parts.

Tomorrow, Wednesday we will be viewing two other cars. One  of each of 3008 and Megane.

We are the proud owners of a 2014 Peugeot 3008. The price had been reduced and that is why we found it on  Gaspedaal. It was just under our budget. It has just done 54469kms (@31070 miles) That is recorded in the Dutch system and can be traced back.

kms3008.png.158105df34a73be8ae9a480af84e781e.png

One owner, that too is in the system.

The car had an APK (Dutch MOT) today. It passed. In the Netherlands, just like the UK tests are undertaken by garages. The Dutch testers are inspected at random times to ensure they are not passing dodgy vehicles. What happens is the information is added into the system by the garage, the test is undertaken. Then if that test is to be control by the inspectors the computer system informs the garage the car must not leave site and must remain in the testing area. The car will be looked over by the inspectors. So in effect the 3008 has had a double test.

The car has no scratches or dents. The inside is as good as one would expect for a car that has so little kms.

Two down sides One the radio and GPS does not work.  There is a noise like a CD is stuck in the slot (but I cannot see one) and the screen does not work. The other is the wheels have been cleaned with something that should not be used. They are a wee bit scruffy. I doubt if they will get renovated.

Oh forgot to say,wWe also looked at the Megane estate today. However it had been taken out for a test drive earlier in the day and the customer had put it into the wrong gear and broke the gear change cable. Estimated cost several hundreds. What the hell can a dealer do?

It was sort of fortunate, as it too was in good condition and that may have put us into a real dilemma as to what to buy all over again.

Tom is good - Tom says
"Go South and keep over to the right a bit.
When you reach the sea, turn right.
Follow the coast until you reach your destination"

That will work for most places on the Continent - may take a long time to get to Calais from Holland but, keeping the sea on your left hand means you'll never get lost..... ;-)
Be a dawdle getting to your place

I picked up the rental at Schiphol.

Reserved a VW up! which was upgraded to a Polo.

I just cannot get on with a lot of bells a whistles on newer cars. Like this display.speed.thumb.jpeg.907e3da0519f0e8a62555cb26b466e5e.jpeg

I was doing 90KMP in what zone? The wife took the image though the steering wheel so it is a wee bit blurred as we could not see what the phone was taking an image on.

The cruise control is cleaver in that it reads the distance between you and the car in front and keeps a distance. But if the outside lane slows it will not allow you to undertake, not even for a few metres. Without cruise engaged and if you go just a few km over what it thinks is the speed limit you get reminded.😕

I shouldn’t be surprised that you’re still moaning about this.

Here’s a couple of pictures of it turned off in my car, I set my preferences when I got it.
