Dollywobbler's Daihatsu - MOT of fail

I am with you all the way on 3 cylinder engines in preferance to 4 cylinders.

The only exception to the rule that the more cylinders the better.

To be honest, it just feels like a normal steering set-up. Can't really notice any difference at all near the dead-ahead, but it now weighs up in bends as you'd expect. I haven't tried hooning sufficiently to see whether feedback is improved. It feels more natural though. It was so over-assisted that it actually felt quite twitchy before. Very easy to over-steer (rather than oversteer).

I have the impression that Japanese PASes are generally a bit on the overassisted side, sort of in the middle between Yeerops and Septics.

The one in the Smith & Wesson is almost yank easy, but not as jelly-like when it comes to mechanical precision. I'd prefer it to be a bit more weighted, but if I just take the PAS belt off, Junkwoman may rebel.

Mrs Wobbler has simply stated that we didn't have such worries with her Mini. That's true. The steering and handling were absolutely delightful. But the Sirion does not leak (water in, oil out), runs superbly, even when it rains, has a useful boot, rear doors and a better sounding engine.

you'd prolly like the pas on my renner 19!- i'd hate to try one without lol

But I'll bet it doesn't have that beautiful first gear whine.

Just a note re the steering-a few years ago, a friend of mine with an e30 318iS ran disconnected p/s.

Mr polisman took a dim view of this down in dat Der laaahndan and served a defect notice on him. Apparently he had to either ;

Refit p/s

Remove all p/s pumps pipes etc or

Fit a manual rack.

I dunno if he was just unlucky, or if there was a valid point of law in there (could drive like a knob on occassion)

Conrad - you would be entirely wrong. The Sirion has fabulous gearbox whine, in first and second. Sounds like a rally car!

He carried out a review of the car at his leisure after asking matey to halt for a small chinwag..

Well, the belt is back on. My insurance company were entirely happy with the 'modification,' but I still wasn't entirely comfortable with it. Having had a quick drive with it assisted again, I guess I can live with it. Mrs Wobbler isn't very happy though.

I tell a lie. Mrs Wobbler has decided it isn't so bad, and she was actually glad of the PAS when in town earlier. I saw her heading into town while I was driving a minibus. Stupid me got all excited. "Ooh, look! A Daihatsu Sirion! It's the same colour as mine! That number plate looks familiar too..."

d'oh

Having the miniMetro back on the road has made me re-discover my arm muscles recently, and has made me realise what a woos I've become in my usual PAS equipped shite.  But I've also knocked the front tyres up a few psi as for such a little car it's still heavy when parking - the old 'feed it through' steering technique helps with the bus-like driving position!

Opened my car mechanics magazine this afternoon to see this cracker in it. World Famous Sirion.

I was happy that they wanted it! Currently awaiting new caliper sliding pins as the front brakes are not healthy. Then it needs new shoes because the rear brakes are not healthy.

Got the new caliper pins fitted. No drama. Has all been a bit quiet on the Sirion front really, as the BX has taken over on daily duty (as much as there is with me). Had a quick hoon it the Sirion today though. It's a truly superb vehicle to own alongside the BX. It feels even more like a Mini-wannabe after a floaty BX! Such fun ragging the engine too. Sadly, the air con seems to have packed up. I guess that's what I get for getting it re-gassed by Kwik Shit last year.

Here it is in town.

You've had this for a fair bit (for you) dw it must be etching a place in your heart.

Scary isn't it? I have vowed never to drive it long distance ever again, due to the incredible lack of suspension (made all the worse when you also own two Citroens) but it's just such a hoot to drive around here. The MOT (July) is the car's next big challenge. Sills need plenty of work.

Even scarier is that Mrs Wobbler is quite happy to drive all three cars on the fleet. This is pretty much unprecedented.

A friend of mine is selling his one at the moment and it was winking at me for a bit, 53 plate 1.3 SL model which apparently has 100bhp, long T&T and 80k for £550, both arches are a bit tatty though, I thought that seemed a good deal myself.

I just can't imagine the four-pot engine is as much fun though, even if it is vastly more powerful.

You made me remember, I spotteted this in Wheatley asda on Friday!

Seeing those two metallic ones highlights just how oddly styled these things are. I've got used to DW's yellow peril now though, with its catfish whiskers.

Have they not paved the roads yet in Aberystwyth?

There is one in the same colour as dw's around our town in Cornwall.

I think someone upset the sea Joe. It threw its sand all over the place.

Remarkably, over six months later, I still own the Sirion! I even washed it today.

I really need to unleash my mate Dave to have a go at the sills. I'm hoping the rust around the rear arches won't interest the MOT man as I've done nothing more about it after my 'temporary' winter bodge last November.

Part of me is tempted to chuck it in for the MOT first though (due 20th July). If it turns out it needs loads of work, then it might soon be for sale very cheaply. Might have to be VERY cheaply though, as when I offered it up on here for £295 recently, there was not even a sniff!
