Find me a Hearse

The tat thread is handy but there was something of an inspiring moment today when it transpired a Hearse is the vehicle to solve a few short term issues this year, not least my desire to one day own a hearse for reasons that only I and goths understand.

The only specification is that it has an MoT and is sub-£1000 (well, sub £500 ideally).  Age doesn't matter, nor does engine size or gearbox type, most are autos and above 2ltr anyway.  I'll likely buy it, use it for a bit and punt it on when done.

I'm not in a rush, I'm hoping to find something before the year is out and it's entirely dependant on available funds, which aren't many right now.  So go on then, give me your best shot.

This kind of thing with an MoT would be neat.

I once suggested to drummer/percussionist offspring that, instead of a van, we might obtain a superannuated hearse to haul around his increasing mass of instrumentage. He looked at me as if I were mad. But then, he does that anyway...

I like those Ford hearses, and I'm comfortable in that era Ford.  Lovely stuff.

It looks rather like it should have the 2.3 diesel engine in it really though for proper low budget send-offs, would compliment the plastic hubcaps and grey bumpers

I'd totally do that.  That would be an excellent vehicle.

Rather ironic that there's a couple of tins of Dulux next to that!

I am in no way in a rush to find a hearse. Eventually the right vehicle will turn up.

A Princess hearse would be the absolute tops but there's only something crazy like 4 of them left.  I don't think I like Micrashed anymore.

Doesn't forum member 109landys3 have one of them, which is currently undergoing restoration?

Have a look at any Funeral Director's dispersal auctions that may be happening near you. know that Lancashire is the wrong side of the country but have a look at this.

I went to the last one of these sales just out of curiosity and while the average lot typically an 03 Ford Cardinal Hearse and matching Dorchester widow wagon made circa 12k a lone 1994 Daimler Hearse, straight out of service, obviously immaculate fsh Long T & T went for £850 no reserve,

Must admit if I'd had the funds I would have probably risked a bid and taken it to the next Whitby goth weekend and put a For Sale sign in the window.

If anything listed at one of these sales takes your fancy I'm quite happy to go and have a bid on your behalf, have off road storage for one long black vehicle until you can collect it if that helps.

The Classic Hearse Register have some for sale sometimes, might be worth keeping an eye on the For Sale section on Ovalchat too.

You have not disappointed so far.  I bet the windscreen on that Carlton - a want list car anyway - is going to be a bugger to replace though, and the MoT has expired... but it is uber-cheap.

@doctormop:  I will bear that in mind and possibly take you up on it if the right car appears while the offer is still valid.

What are you planning to use it for? A hearse has soft springs so they're utterly shit at carrying anything other that a occupied coffin in the back.

Hearses are great and can carry the weight or at least the old mk2 granada I had could. Apparently the older nicholsons were designed to carry 2 lead lined coffins. I used to tow a trailer behind mine and hauled 2 fiat 126's on the trailer and the remains of a third in the back no problem. One thing that did surprise me though is that they are built on the saloon chassis rather than the estate only found that out trying to get a tow bar for it

Initially, I'll be using it to move large, lightweight, awkwardly shaped stuff but after that I think I'll just enjoy owning whatever I get and take it to a few shows, that sort of thing.  I imagine it'll be terrible on fuel, frightening in side winds, hopeless on the motorway, and impossible to park anywhere but it'll be fun.

I'm also sorely tempted to get a floral tribute to CLINT, but badly spaced for comedy effect.

I suppose the springs could be uprated.

You could always buy a black bag/lab, I mean cab. That way you could turn round in the road much easier.

This should be in the 'Golden Rule' thread

I'd love a hearse. Only two of my vehicular desires have perturbed my wife though - one is a hearse, the other is a Leyland National.

Posted

Why not combine them with the purchase of a Leyland National hearse?

I would love a hearse, the Mrs says I'm a sick bastard though

Pretty sure he's buying it as a subtle hint to me..

I'm scared now.

This is due to the higher floor of the Granada estate's boot. It would not allow enough height for the double-deck arrangement customary in British hearses.

Continental Granada hearses, which are predominantly single-deck, are usually estate based.
