Dry today so thought I'd give the bike a good look over- got carried away..

All good so far, no broken bolts, no snapped studs and looks to have been well cared for. Next to split the crankcase.

cat x - had to google it and it seems stolen recovered - not binned but ign looks ok and the key thing

 

they all do that - mine is the same as keys are chocolate :D - also the fact that the snapped key needs to be shown to the headstock :lol: - wont start yeah right

 

only thing making me not speak to him is they dont do weekends - means i can do nothing till new year as need to take a day off to fetch it :(

My Dad has had his for over 40 years and has ridden it aprox 5 times as the last time he went out he found a corner coming up rather faster than he anticipated and it put him off.

I used to have it on my multi bike policy and I think I've done more miles on it than he ever did. I must admit for an old dinosaur it rides very nicely and the brakes work, highlights include coming back from the local bike meet and going round the outside of a bandit on the corner and toddling off into the distance whilst 2 up.

That's a hell of a collection mission!

Hasn't entirely put me off though. I'm due to go to Le Mans next year sometime.

I liked mine but you have to be tallish. Mine was twin carb Rotax 5v single but I think later ones are Yam engined. Everything is in the right place and and it's relaxed riding longish distance on twisty country roads. and slim enough to filter through stationary traffic.   Rotax bit are available but I didn't need any.  It went on to UltraWomble so he'll probably chime in soon. I preferred it to my Yam XT600.

Picked up a spares bike to help with refurbing mine

£300 including overnight delivery as it was 300km away

Most of the engine is in the topbox but it's fairly complete and scruffy

Edit...still a bracing -6°c so the snow is hanging around

ZX9 engine is in the kitchen, in bits. Bought knowing it didn't start with a suspected duff starter clutch.It turns out 2 tiny pins were sheared behind the clutch basket because the alternator chain has been walloping about. Part is NLA from Kawasaki, but shared with the ZXR750, so one on its way to me now. Splait the cases anyway as the chain also drives the oil pump, but all good and wearing its 52k well. Gearbox is perfect and no signs of head gasket issues. Didn't crack the clutch nut when the engine was still in the bike, and didn't have an impact gun, so had to improvise with some nuts and bolts, a couple of spanners, a breaker bar, a wife and some really bad language.

Any moped fans able to help me out?

I bought the Atala Califfone off here and I'm having troubles with it.

It sat for a long time after being in regular use and had stale petrol in it when picked up.

It would start but not run well. We assumed that with fresh petrol and a good clean of the tank and carb it would be fine.

After cleaning out the tank and clearing the jets and whole carb thoroughly it still wouldn't rev properly and bogs at about 3rd throttle.

Noticed a lot of oil coming out of the exhaust after it had ran so inspected the mains for play and found a fair bit of play and the gearbox empty.

Encouraged I'd found the issue, I bought new bearings and seals and fitted them today and rebuilt the engine, to find exactly the same problem as before.

The carb has been cleaned multiple times, replaced by a new one, which was worse, swapped back and had a new jet fitted.

Plug is new although the old one seems to be fine.

What else can it be? Something electric related I assume? Spark is good with the plug out for both plugs.

 

I should point out the seller was a gent and offered my money back straight away when he heard it wasn't running right but I decided to stick with it and try and fix it.

I can't see how electrics would put oil out the exhaust. I'd say rings unless it's one of those unnatural two smoke things I know nuffink about.

If it is a two stroke, I'd be checking for a partially blocked exhaust.  The silencers on mopeds and scooters were notorious for getting bunged up with a nasty mix of residual unburnt oil and combustion products.  Does the silencer come apart for prodding and rodding?

Condensor? Blocked or restricted exhaust sounds feasible though, try firing it up without one on?

Do this - it'll be noisy but if it revs freely without it'll be a blocked exhaust/silencer. Clean it with caustic soda - but be very careful it's very corrosive both to you and aluminium.

The oil was from the crank mains and seals failing, letting gearbox oil into the crankcase, also creating an untameable idle.

Replaced now and no more oil out of exhaust. I've had a look at the exhaust and it seems fine and clear.

It is a 2 stroke.

I tried caustic soda once, if it's not a chrome pipe it's easier to set them on fire and let it all burn out

 

Is it a reed valve engine?

Update.

I tried removing the exhaust and it wouldn't start at all. I always thought 2 strokes needed some back pressure so not sure about those results.

Checked the reed valves for movement and to see if they fully closed, all good.

Same situation.

Any other 2 stroke moped botherers have any ideas?

Condensor and/ or points failing that top coil. Otherwise check the generator windings, my rd125lc was fine when px'd by the time I got it it would only rev to 6000rpm, that was the stator coils.

Some two strokes are very sensitive to timing. Is this one electronic?  I recall my Peugeot moped requiring very precise measurement of the 'mm before top dead centre' position before clamping the flywheel (which included the points cam).  Also, in my youthful ignorance, I opened up all of the small internal holes in the silencer baffles to 'improve breathing.'  The result was an engine which would rev very freely but seemed to have lost a lot of torque.  Your back pressure comment could be valid, this is why the exhaust needs very close inspection to see if the internals are coked up. Even slight choking of the passages may have a significant effect.  Has it got a fuel filter?  If so, replace it if it looks gummy. Old fuel can partially block filters.  Is the fuel valve opening fully (check for good flow with the pipe disconnected).  Is the fuel cap vented?  Most gravity feed mopeds are.

 

Condensers can break down at higher revs.  Can you fit a new one?  

 

The trouble with most two strokes is that there's hardly anything to them, making their reluctance to run quite frustrating and baffling. If it has decent compression, good spark, decent crankcase seals and an adequate supply of fuel it can only be a dodgy carb, ignition timing an/or the exhaust. Possibly  :-D .

I believe it has electronic ignition.

I'll try changing the stator and ignition coil, see what happens.

Califfone with Rizzato buffalo engine should have a combined black box containing electronics+ignition coil.   Power coil on the stator with one wire from there into the black box and one HT lead out of black box.  Other wires will be the blackbox earth and kill switch.  I don't think there's any timing adjustment as the power coil output is usually used for black box power and ignition timing. As the power coil output voltage rises the electronics fires the ignition at a predetermined voltage.

Just re read your original post. How dismantled have you actually had the carb? Have you stripped it literally of everything, cleaned the pin holes in the emulsion tube, had the mixture screw out, blasted through every orifice with compressed air?

 

Will it rev out on light throttle or does it die at a certain rpm regardless of throttle opening

 

When it starts to die what happens if you put the choke on.

 

A new carb (of the correct spec) shouldn't make it worse, if it's not a carb issue it should be exactly the same.
