I love this idea to save the petrol home!

Well my wife has found a discount code that reduces the train fair to £9.75 which helps a bit with my how cheap can I get there quest. I am surprised gentlemen that some people who appreciate the value of often unloved cars don’t enjoy the how cheap by rail game. The best recently I have travelled is £5.00 to Dudley and £7.00 to Hove. I have said all along it's not a deal breaker.

All I need is confirmation that Mr Bo11ox is happy to sell me the car for £100 and that he can collect me from the station, 5th Feb for me to collect it is ok. Given this I will buy the train ticket and get the car insurance sorted. Then I will have to make an advent calendar for the count down to getting a new toy.

I'm shit at geography.

But Train from Grays, Essex to Crewe, on "trainline.com" mid morning departure, £75.00

Train To London Victoria, £11, Megabus from London Vic to Manchestarrrr* £5.00.

WTAF? Bus and train combo takes an extra 2 yours, but, hey, £49 saved!!

*Not actually sure how close manchetser is to Crewe...well, it's North innit?!

I can just see this turning into a sketch on the AS comedy show, where every passenger is collecting a car and there's a train of A-framed shite on the back of the Megabus!

Hmmm, this could work - do Megabus do charters, seeing as Mr Bickle's hinted at a clear-out?!:twisted::twisted:

By road I'm guessing about 40 minutes, by train not much more I'd have thought.

In my younger years, if I pulled and had no blobs I used to either order a pizza or a taxi and ask them to pick some up on their way and deliver them to my house. Could use the same theory there.

"Can I have a 12" ham and pineapple, and on the way can you pick me up a Rover 220 Sli" *

*actual words used once were ""Can I have a 12" meat feast, and on the way can you pick me up a packet of blobs from Jacksons as there is a naked Czech student bent over in the front room who is after a meat feat of her own".

On that occasion 2 takeaway drivers turned up, still laughing when they delivered the pizza (and blobs) and both were craning in to see (the still fully clothed at that point really) Czech girl sat on the couch.

Yo Cylinders, no problem to sell you the car for £100 or to pick you up from the station. I like to 'hear a voice' when buying and selling motors though so give us a call on O78OO 9O2396 and confirm what the plan is.

Will you let him reverse the charges, to save him a few pennies, like...

Conversation had, the Rover is for me and I didn’t even reverse the charges

Anyway new problem, I like to buy a 1:43 scale model of every car I buy but I can't find one for the Rover 220 SLi. I am happy with any variation with the right body shape even a Honda Concerto. Has anybody know of such a model and if so make and part number.

As far as I'm aware, the only post 1990 Rover models available are 3 different scales of Sterlings, a Vanguards 75 and MG ZT, a schuco 75 prefacelift and a white metal kit of an MG ZR. Shame as I'd love an R8 or later shape Rover 45 model.

I like models of the cars I've had too,but have never seen an R8.Have a feeling there could be aTomica 1/64 Concerto but could be wrong :?

As far as I am aware, there is no scale model of the Rover 200. However, there is/was a pewter model of the 200 which is mo6nted on a wooden plinth, but these are very rare and can be quite expensive to buy, I don't know who makes them either.

I've seen the Bolleaux 220 SLi. £100 is more like a token payment, call it Autoshite Inheritance Tax. It's a nice enough thing, shove a secondhand screen in it, give it a coat of fettling and enjoy.

The 2.0 ones go well.

Thats about the size of it I'm afraid, you can't get a 1:43 R8 at present.

No need for apologies I am happy with the banter.

The model issues is a real shame as the only other cars I have not been able to get are our Bonds, my wife has two Equipe GT4s and I used to own a 2 LTR Equipe convertible. I have seen a white metal kit of the convertible and bid a lot for it but was out bid and never seen another! I also have had a couple of Vauxhall Carton Estates company cars from 1989-94 vintage and can only find saloons. For my Lexus 400 I have had to settle for a LS430. There has had to be a bit of variation with some but not bad from around 130 cars my wife and I own, have owned or had as company cars.

So let me get this straight. You buy a model at the same time as owning the real thing to keep as a momento/to remind you of the cars you have owned over the years? Is so I quite like that idea :D

Yes that's spot on and my dream is one day I will have time to repaint and detail all the models to match the original cars they represent.

Can't you pop the windscreen change on the insurance. £50 notes excess on mine.

Then you could make a model of the screen, have it lying by the side of a Rover, up on axle stands type of look. Parked next to it is man from Autoglass in one of Southampton's finest. Your diarama prize piece starts here

I think mr b said there was some grot around the screen you'd need to address before fitting a new one.

Did six-cylinder get the mingebag express to go and pick this up yet?

I have agreed Tuesday the 5th Feb and barring natural disasters I will be there to collect the car. As the one place I would have liked to visit in Crewe, The Railway Centre is closed I am working on another cunning plan. Maybe for my run home Forum member could line the route and cheer me on!

Ring Crewe railway centre up (forget emailing - you will get nowhere) and tell them you have money to spend (:lol: ) and they will open up - they did on a damp Friday last November

It’s Rover collection Day tomorrow at last! Rail ticket booked, Insurance arranged, and RAC card in my wallet.

Not much beats the feeling of excitement of a rail journey to pick up a new* car. :D

I went by rail from Preston to Oxford on a Sunday to pick up the 944. Still remember the trip, the ' will the car get me home' feeling. It did. The RAC were not involved.

Enjoy!

Plus one

Only done it once - Scirocco bought unseen!

but it is something to be repeated.

just been out tonight with the jump leads and that. All seems to be in order except a bit of a swimming pool in the footwell! I will do my best to get rid of that.

Posted

Aye. It's a great feeling sitting on the train, wondering whether you'll be posting in the Grin thread or the Grumpy thread when you get home...

I need to buy something else. It's been months!

This evening I took my wife out in our Citroen ZX TD from cold, she said on start up it sounds like the bag of spanners are fighting again. My reply was from tomorrow we won’t have that because I will have a “Rover†to take you out, slight sigh was all the response I got.

I am not going to sleep well tonight, it’s just too exciting like Christmas.
