MONDAY JOHNNY LIGHTNING PLAYING MANTISES

Anyone into Johnny Lightning?  And just what is a Playing Mantis anyhow?  Toys that bite a mans head off?

1970 Plymouth 'Cuda and 1969 Plymouth Barracuda

Had these to for almost twenty years, not sure where from.

Superb detail

Will say the paint on these is very durable.  I had them kept loose in a box!

Something that seems to be happening to a lot of Vanguards lately, well a lot of diecast, really...

So, it's the rare non-Cosworth version of the Vanguards Sapphire, in GLS flavour, which is one of my favourite Sierra variants. I always tend to favour the mild sporty variants of a car rather than the balls out hottest version. The Astra SR rather than the GTE, the Escort 1600 sport to the RS, the 205 XS to the GTi etc. I always liked the way the Sierra GLS looked, with its grey lower half, red bumper stripes, sporty wheel trims, driving lights, and it's captured well here.

Just a shame they modelled the facelifted GLS rather than the earlier model which had one of the best wheel trim designs of all time.

Back in the day, I drove H531 BDM, a white Sapphire for a local taxi firm. Though it said LX on the boot, it was in reality a base Classic version with the 1.6 pinto, no leccy windows or central locking. But what made it cool in my eyes was that it had been pimped up with red bumper and side moulding stripes and the above wheel trims, so it at least looked the part. I later got upgraded to J576 FTS, a late model 1.8 LX then K253 MWS, a last of the line Azura with the injected 1.6 CVH. The ultimate for me though was when I went to another firm and got given J567 GAG, an immaculate grey late model GLX Turbo diesel. All Sapphires weirdly, a hatch would have been better for taxi work, but generally, in our town, the majority of Sierra taxis were Sapphires.

So this model is a nice trip down memory lane. For a while I've been eyeing up the cancelled-run black GLS versions that have been on eBay for a while, but this one popped up while I was browsing and had a couple of bids, then won. It was a bit more than I usually like to pay for a second hand Vanguards, but still a fair bit less than the Buy It Now price other sellers have them up for. And it's mint. Even the normally fragile cardboard outer box has survived generally unscathed and the model doesn't look like it's ever been out of the case. Until now...

 

Can't believe I've been after this model so long. It dates from one of the many rebrandings from around the Corgi takeover, when the models were divided into collections by Marque, with a seperate collection for Police vehicles. 2005, blimey, where does the time go?

Lledo still on the plinth at this time.

One main criticism with this model is, "Come on Corgi, where the feck are the red stripes????" which are a main visual part of the GLS spec. Especially as the black version got them!

Great treatment on the front end though, the headlights, the grille and the correct bumper with the driving lights.

And again at the rear. Great badging, and fantastic looking tail lights, they really show up how nasty the tail lights look on the latest XR3i model with their locating pegs on show. Liking the number plate font too. The big bore tailpipe gives the game away that this version shares the Cosworth's baseplate.

Always liked the rear detail in this Sapphire casting, with the speaker detail and correct rear headrests.

Nice three spoke wheel, as I remember on the high spec Sierra versions.

More sharing with the Cosworth, as this has the Recaro style front seats, which the real GLS didn't have.

And what looks like the Cossie side skirts too...

It's lairy relative wanted to get in on one of the  photos....

That completely passed me by at the time. The detail is almost perfect as you have highlighted. I especially like the rear badges and front lights. I focused on the 1:24 Schabak  Sapphires at that time but they are the early versions and also have the euro-style hatchback bonnet rather than the UK spec grille. When I lived in Glasgow 2003 to 2005 there were still lots of late model Sapphires knocking about and the bodywork seemed to last much better than earlier models. After that they seemed to disappear  overnight. I am off to see if there are any bargains on ebay!

One of the Matchbox only released in America is the Silver Streak

Which you will of course recognise as the Mod Rod. Chances of finding one are pretty slim but having a few* spares kicking around I thought I'd create something similar. Unsure whether to put stripes on it, and whether I really like a black windscreen?

Whilst having a break from adult shit (aka hiding) I did what I've been meaning to do since DC's parcel arrived last Friday and had a windowsill Forward Look gathering upstairs in the back room . Yes, I am that sad...

Yes, it has no steering wheel or dashboard, so is neither LHD nor RHD

I have some new bits. Hiding at the back of a poorly photographed job lot were some tidy Matchbox

Also got this Zylmex Mini, that despite the wear has complete bumpers and grille - often broken

There's a bit of back story to this one. Spotted an unusual Superkings Black AMX Javelin from a seller that had some other cars I wanted - but he managed to post it to the wrong person. I was after one to restore as I have one already. Located one from a different seller, in better condition...

...and grabbed my other one to see which was most in need of work. But they have different interiors, quite surprised as the black version is quite rare anyway

Grabbed this one as it still had the wing, I'm sure @Datsuncogwill approve!

Came with a black one which has the headlights missing from the red version 

And also arrived with this Bora, pretty sure I have another of these somewhere 

Last but not least, @flat4alfais to blame for me getting this Majorette custom van

57 Plymouth is lovely, if only they'd released a two-door to paint red with a white roof

Been keeping my eyes open for a scruffy one to repaint but that's the absolute last colour scheme I'd go for.. It'll be black with a primrose roof like the Cold War motors Plaza when/if it happens.

The Alfas you have,I have carded,the red one came from Toys R Us

I've also got these loose ones,they all say Made in China on the base,except for the white one

The white one has Edocar on the base

It came in this box

Back of the box shows the other DTM cars which they used to sell in Toys R Us 

Then there's these Track Stars which I think came from Australia years ago

There are others,I saw some I didn't have on eBay last year.

The Sapphire really is lovely; I managed to get one on release, and it's definitely a favourite. Great casting, superlative details, and a nice reminder of something once-common that just seemed vanish overnight. Nice pics, excellent write-up!

Have I managed to get hold of a built Eidai Grip Kit?

Underneath it states EIDAI CORPORATION

Takes two AA cells and the motor drives a cog on the axle.  It flies!

It was a 99p mis-listing.

I did tell the seller what I thought it was, but they didn't bother to change the listing to suit.  So presumably no-one else knew what it was and didn't bid

While taking the underneath photo, the motor kicked into life!  Small switch in the cut-out at bottom  is a bit loose and span the wheels in photo!  It has life to it, granted.

I have quite of few of these but not many in as nice condition. I'd like a tidy white version if anyone spots one

The fading is a real shame here, as the pink Road Dragster is quite a rare beast

Not the tidiest, but at least this SL still has its roof and windscreen intact

I learnt the other day that there are early and late versions of the 3.0 BMW, this is an early one before they reinforced the door hinges

 

Not found the green Superkings 911 yet, but I did gain the Superfast one

I always remember having a couple of these when I was a kid in two different shades of blue
