Hey , JM or anybody else who may know, how do you remove paint from plastic, other than sanding down?

 

I have a yellow Sun Star Escort XR3. The bits that I thought should be black such as the spoiler, sills and b pillar were all yellow, so I painted them Matt black. Now I'm told that yellow ones were colour coded. <\facepalm\patrick_stewart\>

 

The spoiler is too intricate for sanding down and if I can get away with just taking the black off I'd be very relieved.

 

Does anyone have any ideas?

There's a facelift Mk2 Transit in 1:24 on eBay right now, but it looks like a dealer model or something - the text on the box is simply "Ford Transit" rather than the maker. Seems a shame to chop it up but it's bidding at just £20 right now.

Actually, turns out it's an ESCI kit but reboxed by Ford for promotional use. Are you sure they're rare? There's loads of people chopping them up to make LWB, pickups and the like.

 

I had this kit in '85 - it was pretty good.

It's always exactly the same kit in different boxes, just moulded from different colour plastic. All of them contain RHD and LHD dashboards.

All of them command ultra stiff money. If you don't believe it, just watch the one currently on Ebay.

^^I have seen one or two at autojumbles and they do turn up on Evilbay but never cheap. Unless you are lucky (not Lucky Toys, just lucky...!) and the seller doesn't know what he has. I have had some luck with generic searches such as "plastic" "Hong Kong" etc. Got a few nice bits that way.

I've been away for a week OOP NORF and bought more diecast goodies. For those in the Yorkshire area, there is a diecast stall on Castleford market on a Friday, who is very reasonably priced. Also bought a couple of bits and bobs from Going Loco model railways in Wakefield, he doesn't do much 1/43 tackle, but if you are in to 00 scale stuff, they have tons in. Photos to follow later when I download my cameras

I used to strip painted plastic bits by putting them in a tub of brake fluid, leaving them for a while and then clean them with washing up liquid and a toothbrush...

I used to strip painted plastic bits by putting them in a tub of brake fluid, leaving them for a while and then clean them with washing up liquid and a toothbrush...

 

Not the best method, because brake fluid soaks the softeners out of the plastic and thus makes it brittle. Especially very old plastic models can literally fall to pieces when brake fluid is used.

I use thick bleach. However, you must use a really high quality air tight container for this, i.e. Tupperware quality. Otherwise the bleach evaporates very quickly and loses its 'bite'.

Even clear parts can be soaked in bleach, they often craze in brake fluid. Expect having to leave the parts in the bleach for several days before you see a result.

Plated plastic pieces however strip in seconds. Also make sure that the parts are completely submerged. Bleach only strips the areas that are exposed to it.

 

Do NOT use bleach on metal models! Or in metal containers!

 

Other modellers had good results by spraying the models with oven cleaner, then sealing them in a freezer bag for a few days.

 

Speaking of freezers, if you find it difficult to take a built plastic kit apart, put it into the freezer overnight. You will be surprised what low temperature does to glue.

Don't use anything, they're supposed to be black.

You, Vitesse and indeed Ford got it right, Sunstar fucked up.

No Mk3 XR3 or XR3i hatches ever had a painted spoiler, as far as I know. Just the White Lightening RSTurbo .

My latest additions. I also have a Vanguards Morris 1300 Countryman which I haven't photo'd yet. The Oxford Daimler hears is the mutts nuts. Needs a coffin in the back though. Audi was a cheapy. Hard to resist
