Picked this up today in TK Maxx.

Saw this set on the shelf last year, but thought it was a bit pricey.

Went back the day after to have another look and it was gone.

Fast forward to today, and lo and behold.......at a cheaper price than it was the last time.

That'll do me.

I still have the Transporter and some of the cars I got as a Christmas/Birthday (my birthday is a few days after Christmas so any big present would be for both) present all those years ago. Of the cars shown here only the Rover is my childhood one. I still have the Cortina, but it's in another display and the blue Mini Se7en which has been repainted by me. The Cortina and Imp shown are both from @danthecaprimanand the Minis from ebay. I have no idea which Rally Mini I had originally in the set and I also had the earlier Monte Mini with race number 177. The catalogue is my childhood one and gives the price of the gift set as56/6.

Marcel's book shows both Minis, but it looks like the Monte one was mail order only

Mine was probably the Sun Rally version

In case you're wondering, here's the Cortina

Been in france for a few days and picked some Norev beauties up in the Peugeot  museum, (which had its card terminal been working would have been a lot more! I was sadly limited to the euros in my pocket!!!) I wont upset anyone by saying they were just €2.50 for the regular ones….

First up the 307, a right little cracker and only grabbed because I saw a loose roof in one box! This has got a metal base and scale towbar that would pull a 40 footer! Roof is plastic.

Next up the 508 twins - saloon and estate, back to plastic bases this time. Not normally my thing but I thought they looked great together.

Next up at nearly €5 (!) was the white 205 which I'm sure would be better in pretty much any other colour, but still under a fiver so I buckled 😇

Finally the 1/43 Lazer green GTI. There used to be one of these at the top of my road brand new when I first passed my test, I always thought it was a brilliant combination, especially when it got lowered one day. Another Norev for the rather quite palatable €12 this time, its a little cracker and detailed just right - model fineness but with toy heft. The wheels on both 205 are a very good representation of the 15” GTI alloys. There on sale here reasonably:

Anyone know how much they cost new? It’d be interesting to convert that price to what it’d cost now. I bet it’d not be a particularly cheap toy…

After the excitement of Mattchbox doing a Mk2 Fezza XR2, it seems Corgi are getting on with theirs at last, with the release of the CAD images and a showing of the prototype in the new year.  Hopefully they should get it out for  next year, and its nice to see that there are possible standard versions mooted as well. A white 1.4 S like my old one would be mega!

Ohh, nice!
Standard ones sound good. I’d like a 1.3 Ghia in Paris blue like my old one!

Definitely a high end prezzie then back in its day.
Id expect if you got one of those that’d be about your lot? But consider how much people spend on their kids now!

I don’t think people went so daft in those days, there wasn’t China to make all the tat they get now so presents would have probably been less numerous. I looked this year to find what I’d have liked if I’d been say 8, the only thing that appealed was the Lego Seaside Harbour. At £80 or whatever it’d have been main present money.

Corgi Model Club have absolutely smashed it with this one, I've had a few Batmobiles over the years but seeing one as it would have been new, with all the extras, is just fantastic. It must be quite a feat of engineering too as I understand these are challenging to restore and assemble.

Tri-Deck was WhizzWheels era, sold as Gift Set 20 (GS 20).

Mostly with Marcos, Volvo, Firebird, Capri, Lancia Zagato Fulvia and MGB

Some cars have odd colour variations like the yellow Marcos

Here we have a white Marcos, a 911 Targa and what looks like a purple Rover TC with Take Off Wheels

Variation with the blue Mini Marcos, Orange Mini and Bronze Cortina GXL. The blue Mini Marcos only came with the Transporter Gift Set and is very rare.

Not that I know of, I think Van Cleemput says they were orange, blue and white, but I'd have to check to be sure.

I recently received a MK1 Escort from @bunglebus (thank you) that needed a bit of work. I remembered that I had the Humbrol paints I was given by a colleague and I simply used the yellow that was in there to touch up the chips. Then I thought that I’d always wanted to weather a car so I used a bit of sponge to add a bit of ‘mud’. The paint took some mixing!

Those Ford H Series are sooooo cool.
I have the Scammell tractor unit (well it's in storage) & that's seriously cool but that Ford looks brill.

Any chance of anyone showing close up picks of all its cool features?

Not that this thread is helping my current plan not to buy anything due to lack of space..

As I understand it, the very first ones were matt (well more like satin) black, but very soon changed to gloss, hence the matt is very rare

Weird how Corgi went from the exquisitely detailed Ford H series, to the simple (but still handsome) Scammell and then back to the Transcontinental which not only had a tilt cab and an engine, but there was a hole in the floor where the gearstick went through, just like a real one!

After Transcontinental they went with two trailer (plastic deck) Renaults  and then Scanias?

The Ford Transcontinental was designed to carry  the current 1/36 scale cars.   I think the Superhauler transporter took over after that as the larger scale lorries were discontinued. I think the Mercedes bonneted truck was first and then the Volvo F10.

I think you are right, they canned the Transcontinental about ‘83, it was brought back in the late 90’s as a Classic. Below that were the Ford D Series/Bullnose Merc then they brought the Superhaulers out which if I remember were relatively affordable, maybe £3ish at the time in various liveries under either a Seddon Atkinson or a Volvo F10? I have quite a few of those they seemed to be in scale with the 1-75 size better than the Superkings.

I agree the H Cab has great features, but the Scammell is still very nice with the axle and prop shaft moving with the suspension and it did come with the Tri Deck, the ultimate transporter!

Ive never had any of the later Corgi transporters, but you make me really want the Transcontinental now!

Exactly, Van Cleemput says it was to accommodate the larger 1/36 cars as you say, but he also claimed the scale to be 1/48 the same as previous Corgi Majors!

Looking at the Transcontinental sets, it looks to me like a bit of a mix of scales!
The cab appears to be in a smaller scale than the trailer. Which would make sense, as the cabs wheels are common to the late versions of the Corgi Major artics like the Berliet’s and Mercedes sets. The trailer however looks a good bit bigger so it can carry the new 1:36 sized cars in/on it.

Ive got a blue Transcontinental set here somewhere but it’s not to hand at the moment so I can’t look close.

Edit:
You could also get the Transcontinental cab in sets with other trailers like the tankers. Those other trailers are just re-releases of the older models trailers but recoloured from the Mack, Scammell etc and the Transcontinental cab does look in perfect scale with those… which further backs up my theory of the car transporter set being in two different scales!
