2002 - Ten years ago ...

Exactly 10 years ago, I'd just bagged a job with the Iveco main dealers in Exeter selling new and used commercials and had a 'W' plate Mondeo (W924 XOT) as a company motor, the car Mrs Bs6 and myself owned at the time was a rather splendid Volvosaurus 340GL (F943 ORT). I'm sure that the Ovlov is long since gone, and it wouldn't surprise me if the Mondeo had also been fragged.

Those 10 years have gone past far to quickly

2002 was the last year of my apprenticeship - i was having to make do with a '71 Beetle or an '89 Golf 1.6 driver. I also looked like Napoleon Dynamite. 2003 was much improved! :D

I miss it.

20 years ago, Mk2 Escort RS2000 Custom. MTU 11T. Miss that too.

In 2002 I hadn't yet passed my driving test but I did own an H reg Calibra 8v with HGF and 7 alloy wheels. I'd bought it for £250 and planned to do it up myself but a mate needed it so it went to the garage for repairs. Left my possession in running order for £350 so not a total fail. The extra alloys went to a mate who was building a trike.

The only Vauxhall I'd ever wanted to own and that box has been ticked

in 2002 i had a rosso red "G" reg escort xr3i, i bought from an old guy in southampton, it was in pristine condition until it started life here in london.

kids smashed one of the spotlights, so i put it in my gated drive only for it to have every electrical wire in the engine chewed to fuck by my kids 2 rabbits

lost heart in it after that...A.A taped up all the wires and it was shipped out the door..... quickly followed by 2 fuckin rabbits!

Back in 2002 I was working the taxis and I was the owner of a Montego 2.0 turbo diesel saloon. It was an ex British Aerospace fleet example, L reg IIRC.

If I were you, I'd have bought some shallots and prepared a nice stew instead...

Now I can safely say what I had on the road ten years ago, which is unusual for me as my memory is useless. But I know I had the first of my later shape Camaros in 2003 for my 40th birthday so 2002 means I was running the 3rd Generation IROC-Z Camaro.

I also had the Honda VFR750 on the road. I no longer have any Yank cars but have still got the VFR but it's been off the road for a couple of years.

2002 was the year I moved to Sheffield from the soft south. Big move for me, first time living more than 10 mins drive from my parents really.

My daily was this:

And I had a Citroen ZX as spare for emergencies:

Middle of 2002 I replaced the capri with this:

900.jpg

Cos my road in sheffield was littered with speed bumps and ddespite being quite careful I managed to snap 2 springs in as many weeks.

Later in 2002 I replaced the 900 with this (left):

Truth be told it was a golden year for Tone-mobiles, although I should never have let that Capri go.

Having had a crash they year before and in an attempt to build up my NCB once again, I was driving a 1990 H reg Mini 1000 'Racing Green' . :D

rovermini.jpg

Driving it home, I got very bad cramp in my right foot, had to angle my foot at a jaunty angle to use the accelerator pedal. I painted the black grille Hammerite Green and bought the Union Jack flack to put on it because I dare not attempt fixing a large scale one to the roof, getting it on the skew and then it looking really crap. Then gave it a Cooper style chrome grille.

In August 2002, I splashed out on a 3 year old SEAT Ibiza 1.4 S. At £4.7k, this is my most expensive car purchase so far. I no longer felt safe driving the Mini and felt I do with something a bit more comfy and refined.

a 1999 Rover 75 Club diesel

a 1990 Pug 205 XLD in blue with the most blue interior I'd seen in ages - bought from an antipodean in west London for £250 with 11 months MOT - it was GR9

This was back in the days of company funded travel so had a TDci Mondeo diesel........I only only know this because I had a new one every six months between 2001 and 2004 supplied as a free demo by FoMoCo.

They seemed really quiet, quick and smooth then..........

Hmmm, well I can be definite about this one as I owned it from 1998-2007:

It took me to Norway (and back) for the second time in 2002.

And Mrs SL was driving the LH of these two (the H-reg one came later for spares):

I got married in 2002 and I can recall specific events which allow me to be exact about some cars, like finding and rescuing this South African-spec Skyline from a scrapyard in Colchester while Mrs SL-to-be was trying on wedding dresses:

I think this was my daily driver, got replaced later in 2002 with a similar-coloured, better condition example but in hindsight this one was my favourite:

A lot of cars came and went at that time, still a few around and they didn’t cost too much (sometimes free!). At various times during 2002 this lot came and went:

Interesting to consider how little has changed for me car-wise since then, despite married life, two children and a house move the circa 20yr-old Camrys I now drive do the same job as the 300Cs and the Laurel is there instead of the 240K. For day-to-day use I’m still more than happy with £500-1000 stuff.

I started 2002 with a G plate Audi Avant 2.2. :D:D Nice car and plenty of room and not too bad on the fuel Just the size of the tank  It would take up to £50/60 to fill it back then

By August 02 I got a company motor - Skoda Octavia 19 TDI Estate in silver. :D

I then sold off the Audi later in 02

My then wife had a Tipo DGT  until May 02 when I bought an R plate Astra Arctic 1.6 16v auto. That was on the road until August 2011 when No 2 cyl lost compression and it crossed the big bridge

All through I have had the 323i and still have it now

Ah yes. I think it was 2004 when I owned an Audi 100 2.0 with the five-pot lump. Got my new girlfriend to agree to pay for the fuel before getting an eye-watering £75 in! Despite this, she's now my wife. Mind you, the Audi is long gone...

2002- At university, not quite yet qualified, coasting around on a battered mountain bike. Reading practical classics and wishing i could afford a car... My housemate at the time got a hand Me down reliant kitten which she turned her nose up at and refused to drive.

I look back to 2002 with great fondness.

It was the start of probably the five happiest years of my life. I'd been banned from driving in November 2001 for 6 months for speeding (12points) so I was cycling everywhere. I would cycle 4 miles to Hitchin Swimming Pool in the mornings, swim 30 lengths then shower and walk to work. After a day selling Mercs, I'd spend 90 minutes doing weights at the gym followed by the 4 mile cycle home.

Twice a week I would even cycle to Stevenage for sunbed sessions ! I ate healthily and the result was that I was fit as f**k, had a great physique which gave me great confidence that absolutely changed my outlook on life. I was positive about everything! I finished a stagnant 10 year relationship and basically started five years of drink and viagra-fuelled clubbing and shagging! :P

However,it's now out of my system and I've settled into contented middle age ,with middle age spread , staying in on a Saturday night rather than venturing anywhere unsavoury - and pootling to Morrisons in Talbot Tagoras!

Car wise, I had a mint triumph TR7 convertible in Bordeaux Red that for 6 months I couldnt drive , though I did on numerous occaisions!- one of which was to do a feature in the March 2002 issue of Practical Classics for an article on modifying TR7s.

I was driving around in my Ex-Signals Series 3 Landrover, sold that in April to raise the money for a deposit on a flat ( made good money on that!), then bought a 1988 Volvo 740SE off my Dads neighbour for 850 quid. Proper one-giffer owner and utterly utterly mint. I think i'd have paid twice that for it, the car really was that good.

Just a pity I wrote it off in 2005 :(

Finding another mint 740 has been my holy grail quest since then!

I had two cars in 2002 and my parents had one

Mine:

1) H783 PWP: 1990 Fiat Tipo 1.6 DGT in red (or pink) it had the digital dash c/w rev county which flickered madly. It was the first car I had with electric windows, central locking and power steering. Traded in four years later for a Renault Megane. It caught fire on the way to the scrapyard, something to do with the dodgy electrics behind the dashboard

2) G199 CKV 1990 Fiat Uno 60S in maroon. A hoot to drive and better on the motorway than the Tipo!! Still sitting on someone front garden in Stourbridge. I sold it after I bought a BMW a couple of years later. By that time the head gasket had gone and the engine was very worn and smokey.

Parents:

3) A237 UYE: Renault Trafic hightop camper with the 1647cc OHV engine. It was red with romance stickers on the side!! They offered it to me before they sold it, unfortunately I turned it down. I wish I had kept it now, it was in pretty good condition, although the electrics in the camper bit weren't working. Sadly it appears to have been scrapped now.

2002 was a bit of a lean year for me shite-wise. I was going through my first house purchase so I'd just cleared the decks the previous year of anything surplus or unreliable after a run of fairly ropey cars so I only had my Triumph 1300 and this Rover 414 which I'd bought in 2001 when it was only 5 years old. It was a really nice car to be honest and never let me down over the 5 years I had it. I just got bored of it in the end and decided to go back to running older cars as dailies for while.
