My little Rover 620Ti projectL

Recommended Posts

As i posted on the News24 thread before OMGFORUMCRASHED i was offered a 1999 Rover 620Ti for not much money with no MOT and that has been in a barn for 2 years after the previous old boy owner decided that it was too quick for him. The guy selling it was his mechanic and he took it as a trade in on a Rover 75 Estate and even offered to deliver it for me in the price. This is what arrived.

At this point i had already ran my pressure washer over the car, even though it looks shiny in the photos, the paintwork looked as if it's been through a car wash a thousand times and really needed some love, the interior was full of cobwebs and mold too.

The original radio has lost it's code and the display/clock doesn't work as I'll source a new CD player for it.

This was the original dealer, it's only up the road and it's spent all it's life in the local area, apparently the last owner bought it from his mate who had owned it since 2005, when he bought it in 2013 he had a new cambelt and waterpump fitted and a pair of new rear calipers.

197bhp beast, it all starts and runs perfect, the battery didn't even need charging, it's on the key and shows no signs of over heating.

I did wash this but it's showing oil leaks again, apparently these all piss out oil so i don' think i'll be worrying to much.

Looks nice that Triggs, Q car with lots of whoosh. The press fleet had waaaay more than 197 ponies but they had a nasty habit of putting a conrod through the block

Looks smashing. Is V late for one of these?

I think you're right with them wazzing oil. It depends if a battle if you want to engage in or you/your drive can live with it.

Bo11ox, i can't edit the title anymore! Admin any chance of deleting the extra L?

So back to the car, yesterday i gave the interior a good clean, it's come up like new, and then unbolted the tow bar hitch and cable tied the electrics up behind the rear bumper, that way if someone wants to reused the tow bar they can and it doesn't look so ugly.

I then spent all of today mopping the car and polishing it and spraying bullshit spray on it, it's come up like new, the Oxford blue paint really pops in the sun.

This is the only damage on the car, a small crack in the bumper above the front fog.

Ever seen arches like this on a 600 before?!

The interior looks great, i sprayed silicone spray in the window rubbers to help the stiff windows go up and down freely as well as regreased the electric sunroof runners.

This is the only wear on the front seat, quite minor considering these normally wear away.

Lots of bullshit spray used here.

So all in all i think it's had quite a sheltered life, i can't see anything which is too obvious that will fail a MOT so I'm going to book it in for the MOT on Thursday and see what happens, the brake discs are well rusty so I'll be taking the long way to make sure they work better first though!.

I'll give that a try, thanks! Halfords online are listing a ex display new Kenwood USB/CD stereo for £35 and amazingly my local branch have it in stock so I've reserved one to collect, I'll be surprised if they do have it but seeing as i was looking at spending £20 on a secondhand one a extra £15 for a new one seems good value to me.

(Edited titel for you)

These are ace things, we borrowed one out of the auctions yonks back and smoked it round for a few days. Nobody expects a car like this to be tear arsing past them at daft speeds, so much fun.

Excellent looking car trigger, my old man had one on an S plate. Same colour, 1.8 I believe. Went like s*** off a shovel. Comfy too. Went all over the UK in it.

What you have there really is a fine example.

Indeed.  The bloke in the 14-plate 328i who couldn't shake mine off (in a straight line at least) looked suitably puzzled.

did the 620ti get a Torson LSD in the gearbox like the 820 Vitesse did?

and yes when is the roffle, as i'm gonna have a few numbers on for this when it does!

well bought sir, well bought!

He just needs something scary and ginger for the full Spice Girls effect there EssDee :) Let's hope Triggs also has a Delmonte moment with the MOT

Really, 197bhp? They can't weigh too much either. That sounds WAY more fun than it looks, with the weird mix of wood and Recaros.

Like SportsGrandpa.

the 197bhp was what the T-series "race" engines were producing.

these were intended to be used in an 820 coupe entered as a touring car.

BUT the BMW takeover of Rover Group from BAe put an end to the program, and the race engines ended up in the press fleet cars.

in general use the T-16 turbo is closer to 150-odd bhp, but as the T was developed out of the B, it does have plenty of torque even at lower revs.

what ever the actual output, any T16 turbo is a fun, FUN car to hoon around in!

Very nice. The head teacher at my primary school had a T-Reg one of these in that light gold colour they did, and it looked amazing compared to the Micras and Escorts that most of the other teachers had.

Great job cleaning it up, it looks like it is in great condition. Hopefully I will be able to see it when I next go to an event at Shotley (do you know when the next meet up will be yet?)

Edit: Just realised that I missed it on Saturday.

The next ones on Thursday 18th May but we do have a meet this Sunday at the Stag cafe at Haughly on the old A14.

Apparently it does have a LSD but I'm still yet to actually drive it so i can't be too sure! This evening i collected the new CD player from Halfords, £35 for a Kenwood CD/USB stereo is bloody cheap! It took all of 5 minutes to fit and sounds great, the electric aerial goes up and down nicely too.

It's a bit jazzy but it will do, i also got the wheels off and checked the brakes over and gave them a quick wire brush, i couldn't see to much to worry about other than surface rust.

The split pins on the front ball joints had rusted away so i drilled them out and fitted new ones and i touched in a few chips. It looks proper mintola now!

Ok, that is about 5 miles from me, so I will hopefully make an appearance. What time will it be starting?
