That R4 doesn't look too bad! Aren't the wheels on those a three-stud jobbie? Bet your choices are severely limited as to what you can replace them with in the first place.

I hate those classics with huge 18" Ripspeed shite, esp Capris and Cortinas with early 90's style wheels, they looks awful.

I didn't like the look of that Acclaim with the Golf wheels, they looked too small.

Personally, I HATE these wheels:

They came standard on post 1996 Rover 800 Vitesses. They remind me of an old duffer wearing a nice suit with trainers. They just dont look right. Alot of 800 "enthusiasts" are bolting these abominations on to thier Sterlings now

I quite like that P6 'Harlequin' and the gray Escort.

Hhhmm. I quite like one or two of those. i have similar wheels to that 4 (starbursts) on my early 5 -and think they're fine.

Agreed some are 'inappropriate' -but reasonable, period rims can set a car off nicely

+ 11 million. In fact can't think of anything worse than a Mk3 Cortina with modern rims on it, haven't seen one that looks good yet.

Im with Pete, although some of the above wheels are inappropriate, I think the RS1600i on BBS looks well, the Harlequin P6 on keystones looks reasonable (and will only improve once its all one colour) and the dull P6 on slots is a gasser project that, knowing the owner, will look ace when finished.

I think they're TSW wheels, they were popular in the late 80's/90's.

I think problem lies with the look of alloy wheels, for the past 15 years or so, they've been really puny and spiny. They just never fit the car because they weren't made for it.

Another thing I don't understand is people who insist in spraying their alloys black. It might look fine when parked up buy when the car's moving it just looks like it's had its wheel trims stolen.

I'm surprised no-one has posted a pic of Billys old S Type.

I like black alloys.

I think the R4 looks GR9 with those wheels- in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the last-of-the-line models (was it 1986?) were sporting something similar from the factory.

As for black alloys, I won't go looking for them but I wouldn't mind them, either. They save you the trouble of having to clean the brake dust.

Dark grey is a good balance.

It seems grey works well on a red car against a snowy background............. :)

NO! It absolutely isn't! I'm with Cavette. Old cars should wear appropriate wheels and tyres.

This belongs to a lad on the A30/35 forum, and I'm sure he won't mind me airing it here. He's done a beautiful job of restoration and subtle mods, all credit to him; and a set of wide Minilites? Why not? They're lovely wheels, and suit a great many cars of various shapes and sizes. BUT: wtf has he wrapped round the rims? Call those tyres? Especially, call those A35-appropriate tyres? I certainly don't.*

I think you might be misinterpretting me Eddy.

I'm all for appropriate alloys and a bit higher profile tyres. But I do like dark alloys (apart from those on black cars).

That's a possibility I'm prepared to consider... :D Probably wouldn't be the first time, either, I'm actually quite good at it. Professional-standard, even.

I'm happy to accept a certain amount of black in the pattern of an alloy (or even steel) wheel, I mean, look at RoStyles; however an all-black wheel is rather a large step too far. And grey? Isn't there just far too much grey about already? Grey just doesn't work, for me anyway.

The Herald we had when I was learning to drive was Valencia Blue like that one.... :D

HA! I'm not the only one who's had that thought then...

Here I was, happily planning to fit scorpio 16" alloys to my black mk3 cortina (and painting them black...) and you all go and spoil it

Those were standard fitment on some R4s in some countries, available here as a Renault Boutique option as well in this country. Had an R5 years ago with them on, quite like them myself.

I quite like those white wheels on the Allegro. Is that Torsten's old Acclaim?
