RoadworkUK Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 Struth, blimey and crikey. Just astonishing. Makes me wish I had a bigger garden. I think I probably owe you a drink.
Guest Leonard Hatred Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 Really? I've been getting 40mpg out of mine. I can imagine it might not fare so well on a motorway run though as it's pretty low-geared. I agree that the seats are a bit pants, but I don't really do any long-distance runs in it so not a major issue. I've been getting on fine with it as a daily - it's very nippy off the line and has enough power to safely get past dithering old coots in Almeras etc., and the three-pot engine sounds gorgeous at 7,000 revs. Handles very nicely too once you get over the silly low-geared steering. Headlights aren't great though. To be fair to mine it mostly saw long distance commuting and travelling, at quite high speeds - the engine pulled something like 4500RPM or more at 80MPH in fifth gear I think. 7000 revs, I guess it's carb'd? The steering is really tardy like you say but they have a great turning circle for a car what is essentially a FWD car I still hanker after another one, I wish I'd held on to the good one I bought, and the impetus to replace the fuggered clutch and exhaust.
Wilko220 Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 My first Hunter, a 1976 Topaz. Lovely car this was - it had overdrive which made it a brilliant long-distance car. Paid £50 for it with MoT and a genuine 75K on the clock - possibly the bargain of my car-buying life. It ended up as a victim of the scrappage scheme. Heartbreaking. One of so many classic victims of this disgraceful scheme...
nigel bickle Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 Excellent Wuz -a true autoshitter. I'd bevery happy to own at least 70% of that lot...

seth Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 Brilliant Wuv. I guess over the years on here a few of those have popped up now and again on here but so good to see them in one thread. What happened to that Toyota estate then?
Danblez Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 "Hi my names Wuvvum and I am a shiteaholic" That is a truly epic addiction you have, well done!
wuvvum Posted January 21, 2011 Author Posted January 21, 2011 What happened to that Toyota estate then?It was eventually sold to a rather eccentric chap who cycled over from Kings Lynn to view it, poked around it for an hour, then said he'd let me know and buggered off. An hour later he rang back, having cycled halfway home, and said that he'd decided he wanted it and was on his way back to collect it.
wuvvum Posted January 21, 2011 Author Posted January 21, 2011 Found a couple more (analogue) pics this morning while scrabbling through a box of assorted crap. I've brought them into work with me to scan them in. Reliant Regal. This was probably the worst car to drive that I've ever owned. It was a 3/25 (598cc and 25bhp) and was utterly gutless, deafeningly noisy, uncomfortable seats, rock-hard ride, unstable handling, hopeless turning circle... At least it was interesting though, and I actually quite liked it in an odd kind of a way. Side windows are missing in this pic, but they were around somewhere. Humber Sceptre. This was another one that turned out to be a lot more rotten than I had anticipated. I eventually swapped it for a Nova. Incidentally the recovery truck belonged to a mate of mine and, at the time, was fitted with a 2.4 York and 4-speed box - fast it was not. These pics were taken by my mum when she came to visit in late 2002. A40 Countryman (lovely little car), Dodge 600 and XM with knackered front spheres and no handbrake. In the bottom pic the back of my first Innocenti is just visible. Cavalier and Cargo belonged to neighbours. Coprolalia and LightBulbFun 2
garethj Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 Brilliant! It’s like you’re a member of an Autoshite library – borrow a car that nobody in their right mind would want, use it for a while then move it on. You have my deepest appreciation.
Shep Shepherd Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 What a fabulous repertoire of motors, many of which are cars that I've fancied owning at some point
Spottedlaurel Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 Yay! This came in very useful when I moved house, Wuvvum kindly lending it to me for a bit. It did many journeys laden with garden stuff, magazines, files etc. Heavy steering made easier when tyre pressures brought up to the right level... I’ve had the pleasure of seeing a fair few of the above, driven one or two of them as well including having a go in the 304 estate (which was very cold on our trip down to The Ace). I also provided a bit of overflow storage when there were the vandalism worries. I’d seen some of the cars before I even met Wuvvum, as one evening in 2003 I stumbled across a car park in the Norwich suburbs containing various odd cars. Think one of them was an Allegro VDP. I can provide a photo of this one: 1996 Toyota Camry 2.2 estate by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr Which I sold to Dave then bought back for spares a year or so later (good purchase, as it’ll provide bits for my latest acquisition). Don’t think it featured above, but Wuvvum’s 850 saloon was useful for picking up the AS school bike Galant when I bought it off Reallyloud in Coventry. 1982 Colt Galant 1600 by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr I think this is another former member of the fleet, didn’t know this when Baz and I saw it at the Bubblecar museum in 2007. 1971/72 Daf 33 by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr And I believe this maybe another one? 1973/74 Saab 96 by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr Wuvvum’s trader’s policy has also proved useful when he’s assisted me in the odd collection/relocation mission – thanks Dave! Coprolalia 1
wuvvum Posted January 21, 2011 Author Posted January 21, 2011 Ooh, cheers for that Nigel. I was disappointed last night that I couldn't find photos of any of my 96s. That one was probably the best one out of all of them mechanically, although the bodywork was a bit tatty round the edges. Daf was a fun little thing too - didn't use it as much as I might have done, but it was brilliant for buzzing around Norwich, and was a lot quicker than I'd expected from 33bhp, at least at town speeds.
scruff Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 What a fantastic thread, more than a few cars vans and trucks in that lot that I've daydreamed about owning - this should be compulsory reading for everyone on here
Phrancofile Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 That Renault Novaquatre is just fantastic! Saabs... A bevy of Citroens... The list goes on. Thanks for sharing. This thread's made a boring morning at work mildly entertaining.
Gompo Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 What a great thread. I do miss reading about your purchases and the places you used to keep/move your cars to and the like.
Mash Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 Amazing, truly amazing. I'll have the yellow Cav, the JU, and the Toyota 1000 please.
wuvvum Posted November 6, 2011 Author Posted November 6, 2011 Resurrecting this thread as I found a couple of photos earlier in the week of fleet members from long ago, so I've scanned them in and thought it would be fitting to add them on here. This was my first car of evAr. Paid £375 for it in late 1998, and owned it for about four years. This picture was taken outside what was then my family's holiday house in central France (the house has since been sold, unfortunately). That van was utterly reliable and I did tens of thousands of miles in it without a hitch. It was a 1.3 CVH with a 4-speed box and was surprisingly nippy - it would just about scrape the ton, although it would overheat if held at that speed for more than a couple of minutes, but it would cruise happily at 85. It was comfy, too, due to the fitment of XR3i velour seats, and it did everything I needed it to do. This was a Visa 14TRS, and it was significant in that it was the start of me having a multi-car fleet - until I bought this I'd only ever had one car on the road at the time (I did have a Mini Mayfair for a while before this, but the Escort van was off the road at the time). I paid £40 for this out of the local paper - it was T&T'd but had a broken rocker arm. I never did get round to fixing it - rocker cover access not being a forte of these cars - so I just drove it around rattling away for a few months. It was a nice thing to drive - my first car with a 5-speed box and intermittent wiper, luxury. I remember the steering having a very strong self-centring action, despite not being power assisted - I think this was probably done with weird castor angles as the steering did weigh up rather a lot during hard cornering. I'd happily have another Visa - just not got around to it yet... After the Visa I bought an Opel Manta GT/J (the only car I'd ever crashed - lost the arse end on a wet roundabout whilst trying to find the demister switch (I was 19...), over-corrected, span it and hit the armco). After that came a Saab 9000 Turbo, and the rest is history... Coprolalia and LightBulbFun 2
ProgRocker Posted November 6, 2011 Posted November 6, 2011 After the Visa I bought an Opel Manta GT/J (the only car I'd ever crashed - lost the arse end on a wet roundabout whilst trying to find the demister switch (I was 19...), over-corrected, span it and hit the armco). After that came a Saab 9000 Turbo, and the rest is history... I love the Visa, wuvvum. I must add the Visa (& the BX) to the mark 2 Cavalier and Rover SD3 to the 'cars I wish I had owned' list The insurance on the Saab 9000 turbo must have costed you shite loads! I wrote off my Fiat Tempra at the age of 24 and I had to go back to a 1000cc car.
Pete-M Posted November 6, 2011 Posted November 6, 2011 I've just been through all this lot again - chuckling away - and realised that the Toyota Celsior you owned is the very same one that gave me a pathological dislike of the bloody things. That tape deck in the rear armrest was amusing. Ex-Jap Embassy car or summat. I did a couple of hundred miles in a day in the thing and truly disliked it, it belonged to Carl from Warrington - a suicidal, goth, retro-rider with a perversion for old Skodas and Saab Cabrios.
barrett Posted November 6, 2011 Posted November 6, 2011 I'm glad you bumped this thread up, I was thinking about how brilliant this was the other day but couldn't remember what it was called to search for it. How many cars have come and gone since the last update I wonder?
DSdriver Posted November 6, 2011 Posted November 6, 2011 Wow, what an incredible diversity of vehicle types! Have you no fear? I presume that for every car you bought there were several that you turned down or just missed so working on that theory you must have owned or nearly owned every type of car available in the UK.
Conrad D. Conelrad Posted November 6, 2011 Posted November 6, 2011 I missed this thread the first time round. It just kept going. Astonishing!
Formula Autos Posted November 6, 2011 Posted November 6, 2011 The old blue and black Austin has, I'm almost certain (I think it's the same reg.), turned up in West Cumbria recently. Whoever has it has had it in at an engine rebuild place (I know the owner of that business) for a fair bit of work. Occasionally I see it being driven about, but I've not managed to get a photograph yet.
wuvvum Posted November 6, 2011 Author Posted November 6, 2011 The old blue and black Austin has, I'm almost certain (I think it's the same reg.), turned up in West Cumbria recently. Whoever has it has had it in at an engine rebuild place (I know the owner of that business) for a fair bit of work. Quite possibly - the bottom end was OK when I had it, but the cylinder head was never quite right for some reason, and the bloke I sold it to didn't seem to know much about vintage cars so he may well have buggered it up more. It did sound quite sweet when I had it though, if a little smokey.
