Chrysler 2-Litre...First Drive

Well, today was the day the 2 Litre was ready to pick up from the MOT station after a month with them and nearly 3 months after me buying it. My only drive in it had been at 5am one wet October morning to the MOT garage with no brakes and spluttering acceleration!

I taxed the car on-line this morning and seemed to send the webpage into a bit of a tizzy at it was the first time it had been taxed since 1986!! Dire warnings came up saying I was trying to tax an un-sorned car and someone would be in contact! Ooo-er!

There was a bit of a hefty bill for the car, but a fair bit has been done...

New brake hoses all round

New front discs

New brake fluid and hydraulic system bleed

Rear wheel balance

New washer pump

New fuel filter

Remove and clean fuel tank

Clean carburettor jets

Engine tune

New exhaust hanger

Repair glovebox catch

MOT

Because I hadn't got the tax disc yet I just risked a little 20 mile round trip down the A1(M)...

...what a lovely drive! The car pulls away smoothly and the autobox is a joy despite being a 3 speed. No jolts or lumpy gearchange! The engine purrs away quietly and very little wind noise. I maxed at 70mph and everything seemed tight..just like a 19000miler should! The indicators make a nice clicky noise and you soon settle into the lovely comfy armchair seats. The steering is a little heavy round town but she glides over speed bumps with hardly a murmur!!

I got to wondering why the car was such a bad seller when new. In 1980 it was £5600 , the same price as a Princess 2.0 HLS/ Peugeot 504 1.8 GL/Cortina 2.0 Ghia. I suppose it was just complete lack of street-cred and a dated 10 year old design.

The strangest thing is, the inside smells just like the 180 I had back in 1985.... another T plater that I paid £400 for when I got my first job..it really is like going back in time!

Anyway,I'm chuffed to bits with it and here's a couple more pics showing the original wheels back on. Next job...thorough valet and ditch the plazzy mirrors for chrome ones.

That is jaw droppingly stunning!, I would have felt like a pig in shit driving that back from the garage, It's perfection! Fantastic! (i think i might be getting a bit overexcited for you!:lol: )

Lovely! It does look great back on the original refurbished wheels, now you just need to refit the original plates! What a find! 8)

it does look rather nice

bet theres not many left driving around in that condition

Phwooorrrrrrrrrrr! That's given me the jesters shoes. Can we see some "held open" door shots of the interior please?

Thanks....! I do prefer it on the original steels...I'm still undecided on the plates...the ones on it were put on when it was a year old, so they are period...but I think your right, the originals might be what is needed. :?

Oh, and see how I've replaced the after market chrome petrol filler cap with the colour coded original?

Isn't there a mechanic at work who will do the jobs on it for a few beers?

Like most modern garages , we unfortunately have a 'if it don't work just replace the whole unit' type attitude...no investigative work then repair it -type solutions..if you know what I mean.

I get looked after pretty well where I take it..they say my cars are like 'family' and I think they enjoy working on old 'tat' as a change from the Escorts and Corsas they normally do. There's not many places would tolerate having cars lying around for a month waiting for parts!! :)

This is just stunning, remember them in the day, did see a few than after the usual 10 years just vanished from the streets. Very jealous and clearly in very good hands ..

Beautiful, you lucky man!

I have never seen one of these in the flesh. I guess you are right about why they didnt sell well in the late 70s, they would have looked fairly dated by then.

Looks fantastic. You must be chuffed to bits with it.

Very pretty! Good save sir, and I can almost smell the pride you now have in it, from here!

Exceptional, if I was a bit younger i'd be headed for the kitchen now to make a hole in a watermelon and warm it gently in the microwave.

Thats gorgeous! Just like an Avengers big brother!

I forsee many miles of smiles with that hot mamma!

Thats lovely. They always remind me of my early years spent in Spain, they did seem to sell well over there.

Posted

They were built in spain were they not?

this is so utterly lovely i'm not sure what to say. Just when we were all fawning over Richieg's shite collection you come back and BOOM! remind us all about your 2-L.

you need to get some side-by-side shots with one of the Tagoras... that'll really push you back into first place

If I wasn't in abject groinal agony with painfully swollen man-bits I would be honoured to draw a map of africa as a result of this thread/picfest.
