Introducing two new contenders:

 

From Italy. Handbuilt by robots. I give you, ladies and gentlemen, the FIAT Strada*

 

And from France. The Pear. The Renault 14.

 

The winner will go on to defend its title against the Austin Allegro in the next round.

Sorry Fred, I forgot to include the poll. As with previous middleweight bouts, the winner is the shitiest contender. The elusive quality* of 'shitiness' is undefined, to allow for debate.

Renault 14. Fiat Strada leant its floorpan to the Lancia Delta, which in Integrale form dominated rallying etc.. The 14 has sparkplugs that you need UJs in your arms to get out, I believe.

Strada had circular door handles, and you could get batshit fast ones.

Therefore the R14 wins due to a higher level of uncoolness.

Also the Strada came in the 105 and 130 TC models, I'd kill for a decent one of those, especially the 105TC.

I voted Renault 14 simply because on a 'complete reversal of opinion' register , the 14 is sky high. What I mean is, when they first came out (1976?) I hated them. I didn't like the complete 'roundness' and 'blobbines' of them...no chrome...no vinyl roof...no straight lines....no nice black door mouldings ......the antithesis of what I liked at the time.

Now, however, if I saw one I would simply be overcome with emotions of pure lustful WANT. How weird!!

 

Strada...ok when they came out, nice now, um..yeah, nice.

As others have said, the R14 has no real redeemable features, whereas the Strada is quite well proportioned and genuinely nice to look at and also has a bit of a bonkers effort (130TC) which is meant to handle quite well and go like the clappers. A look at 'FastestLaps.com' shows that a 130TC went around Castle Comb quicker than a Puma 1.7, 309GTI, Mk2 Golf 8v among others. Dont get me wrong, I like 14s. The first car I remember my Dad having was a 14 and I am fond of them - but they're definitely the shiter of the too.

 

I'd love a go in a 130TC.

Strada was almost a really good car next to the R14.

Have to admit to being biased, but have been driving my sister and her partner around this weekend in mine (they are used to modern non shite cars). They were amazed at how comfortable and roomy it was and also how quiet. I have found over the last few weeks that it is quite economical and not exactly slow for a 1.2. I even changed one of the spark plugs with little problem!! So I do not think they were as bad as some people make out, apart from the rust issues!

 

I do like Strada's too though.
