cars can be replaced, life sadly can not, buy shite and enjoy it.....

Was just going to post in the 'what makes you grin?' thread that i'm happy to hear Trigger and Mrs.Trigger are both okay....

and now you get to buy two new cars - every cloud an' all that!

Posted

That's the important thing is everyone is ok, if you've been rear ended you'll feel it for a few days.

Thanks everyone, I was the 3rd car in a 4 car pile up in the fast lane of the M11 at Bishop Stortford, the traffic was slow traveling around 60-65 mph when a lady in a 308 convertible had to do a emergency stop as a car pulled out in front of her, a young girl in a Ibiza in front of me hit into her, they just suddenly stopped and although i was a good distance away i ended up ploughing into her and a man in a Avensis ploughed into the back of me.

It happened so quickly that there was nothing i could do, my glasses ended up on the back seat, even my seat went back on the runner but the airbags never went off.

Luckily no one was really hurt about from whiplash but my wife and a passenger in the Ibiza got took to A+E in a ambulance to be on the safe side, Hannah fainted at one point due to the shock.

The worse thing was that it took 45 minutes before the emergency services turned up, I rang back after 25 mins to be told to shut up by the call operator! A complaint will be going in.

In the end the services that did turn up where just ones that was passing!, They even told us to complain seeing that i asked for an ambulance and that we had caused 4 miles of tailback and the cars were still in the fast lane!

I was off to Nottingham to collect that Celeste at the time!

Ouch indeed! Can't believe that you had a pretty serious accident in the fast lane of a motorway and they didn't send out emergency services instantly!

As a random point - the current carer of the Celeste is the chap who bought my Bond...

Glad you and Mrs. Trig are ok. Looked quite nasty that. Obviously the Passat is a write-off?

Posted

as said before trig, watch the neck, you'll proberly be abit tender so take it easy, same for hannah too

Posted

Bad news Trig :( But at least you and Mrs Trig are OK :)

You are right about that sort of thing happening so quickly though. I was involved in a similar accident on the M62 once. I was stationary in the outside lane and I was watching the slowing down traffic in my rear view. I saw a VW bus rear end a slowing Vectra which was punted into the outside lane taking out a VW caddy which bounced back and forth off the armco towards me. I thought FUCK and braced myself for impact. It came between me and the armco and hit the corner of the BMW in front of me, which then hit a Megane. There wasn't a scratch on my Tipo.

I was shaking like leaf and still don't know how I got away with it.

Again, glad you are OK.

Yes Ian, I was collecting it John, I'm really gutted right now, Hopefully my mate is going to run me up there tomorrow to collect it now.

My gut feeling is the young girl in the Ibiza wasn't paying attention, her friend even said so and it wasn't her first crash neither and she was only about 18-19, I was watching her cutting between cars on the motorway only a few minutes earlier, I think she just ploughed into the 308 and there wasn't a thing i could do to stop.

The scary thing is that i wasn't speeding, I had left a big gap and i was aware what was happening yet i still couldn't stop in time, just goes to show you how easy it is, I'm just glad it was a Avensis behind me and not a big 4x4 or even worse a truck.

Aye. Terrifying when it happens. Had someone come alongside my Matiz on the M6 once in similar circumstances. Slam on the anchors and then nervously watch the mirror...

If your seat came off the runners - that'll actually be good for you Trig - that happened when my 2CV got thumped up the arse and I reckon it saved me some serious neck trauma.

At least you are okay! You mention stopping distance being adequate but you not being able to slow down, I think in the chaos of it all and absorbing what was occuring in front of you (there must be a certain surrealness to it all) it would have happened to anyone. Im glad no one was seriously hurt though, at those speeds anything could have happened.

Posted

Frightening stuff. Glad to hear you are all ok. Strength of the towbar probably saved it from being worse - I had someone hit my Twingo on a sliproad, their car (oddly an Ibiza) was a write off. Twingo had a slightly bent boot and back bumper but nothing major.

Important question though - what you thinking of replacing the Passat with ? :D

Posted

Glad you're ok.... doesn't sound like your fault, if the lass in the Seat wasn't paying attention and hit the 308 then her car is bound to slow down faster than stopping distances suggest! You can't be expected to constantly watch three cars ahead....

Posted

I totally agree Pillock, The other car's look hardly damaged although the Ibiza axle is pushed forwards and rear 1/4's are popped out.

As for a new car, It depends what i get back for it as my Passat was a fantastic car, we was only saying 5 minutes earlier about what a good car it's been, I might get another Passat TDi but a newer shape but like i say, It really depends what the insurance company decide it's worth, I've only just taxed it and filled it with £55 of go-go juice

glad to hear nobody was hurt....thank god it wasnt that parcelnet truck behind you.... sends shivers dont it

Posted

I'm glad you're all survivors. Perhaps this is a lesson to those of us that suffer tailgaters..... also those of us that DO follow too closely.

Might I recommend you replace the Passat with a Skoda Superb?

Posted

Bad luck. Glad to hear you are okay. At least you were in a modern. We were just discussing classic car crashes in the pub.... Scared me a bit thinking about it.

What Albert said is right. Driving both modern and old, i probably drive far too close to the car infront in my old cars as i am used to the brakes in the modern ones. Makes you think.

Saying that, in that kind of accident a modern probably shows the scars more as it has crumple zones etc compared to an old car. But the impact is probably worse for the same reason. Accidents happen, and regardless of fault at least everyone is fine.

Posted

Bad luck Trig but at least you and your lady are alright as everyone has already said, good job you were in a modern 'throwaway' and not your old 1602 for a number of reasons.

Posted

Bloody hell. :( Glad your all ok - at least you did not cause it.

Posted

Glad to hear you're both OK Trig. Shame it happened on a tat collecting mission too - what should normally be an joyous occasion!

Posted

Nasty. Pleased to hear there weren't any serious injuries.

Best not to think about it!

Wow, glad to hear you all walked away, Trigger! As others have said, at least you were in your Disposable.

When I was motorway-pounding in ERFs, I often had to dab the brakes because some chimp decided he liked my lane. My ERF weighed 12 tonnes empty, the lane-jumper weighed a tonne, who wins? Funny how they were nearly all in 3-series Beemers.

Hope you and yours are ok, bud. Hope your necks are all ok especially; I'd a bit of whiplash a few years back, and it's best avoided!

It's a testament to the strength of those motors, that you can walk away from coming to a very abrupt halt at motorway speeds.

It's also testament to not tailgating, and keeping a decent gap.

I narrowly missed a multi-car pile up on the M8 at Dundas a few years ago. Crawling thro' wintery evening traffic, in the pissing rain, I was a bit slow with a gearchange. As a consequence, some knob in a silver Escort gunned it into the gap, and spun 180, sending cars everywhere. Messy, but no real injuries.

Glad you and Hannah are ok Mike...only just got in from work to hear this. All sounds very familiar with my 2CV accident (although you were going a lot faster), young girl not paying attention, and my glasses ended up on the back seat as well.

Re whiplash, I had pains in my neck for a couple of days before it cleared and I haven't had any problems since.

As has been said before, the Passat is just metal at the end of the day - the important thing is you and Hannah are ok.
