Mondeo MK1 fixer upper thread “Roadtripping”

I would suggest gaffer tape applied to protect the door frame and roof gutter then using wood or nylon wedges (a little air bag is best) to open a gap in the top of a back door window frame big enough to insert a long bendable rod through.

The locking system way well be dead locked so just pulling the interior handle with your rod won't work (although always worth a couple of tugs anyway) but hopefully the back window isn't electric so you can bend your rod to push/pull the window winder to lower the glass enough to reach in and finish it by hand.

Not sure if a Mondeo rear seat back can be lowered from the cabin area but there's always the hatch release lever by the drivers seat.

The drivers side window has decided to become stuck, it’ll go down fine but gets stuck about 5cm up. I’ve taken the door card off and can’t see anything that may be causing it to be stuck. Hopefully I can figure it out. It’s staying in @Weird Car’s garage tonight thankfully. It’s a shame as I was planning on taking the family out in it tomorrow

After a miserable day yesterday not only with the Mondeo but also at work, I dumped it in my sisters garage. It’s about a 10 min motorway journey. I have to say it’s such a good motorway cruiser. I definitely think it’s the window motor that’s at fault here, as mentioned the window will only go up about 5cm then stop. It’ll go down fine though. After doing that about 3 times the motor becomes red hot! 
 

I put out a SOS post on the Mondeo Owners Club and someone has offered me a motor and regulator for £15 delivered so hopefully this will work. Not sure how easy it’s going to be to take the window out without breaking anything 😳

Some silicone spray or similar down the window channels would be a good idea too,they can really grip into glass when they are old and dried out.

Just try this, because it worked on my Puma:

As window goes up, grab the front part and pull it upwards and backwards as it rises. 

On mine it wasn't rising square so it would get jammed, but the above trick would set it in the right position so it could get fully 'up'. 

I think it was probleh the front clip that held window onto mech but meh, I just lived with it

Pedantic point, it's a Mk2 estate! However the estates look pretty much identical especially from behind!

It's funny. I bought it 5 years ago as "an car" to help with the remnants of a house move and while the Bluebird had some work done, but it's so bloody useful and such a good car. Even if it looks a bit Onslow at times.

Goes all misty eyed. Ah normal cars that do a job well like mondeos, cavs and vectras were always going to be the cars we mourned in the brave new age. Sad really. Good looking car tho @calebaaront. Might have unearthed a jewel there with a bit of work. Old enough to be interesting but young enough to daily with no compromise 👍

Had another look at the Mondeo today, the motor is kanckered so I’m glad I’ve ordered another. With the help of @Weird Car we managed to get the old motor out and the window wedged up for the time being so I can still use the car. Hopefully the new motor won’t take long to turn up so I can get it fitted and have working windows again.

Oh, and the towbar is actually from a Mk3 estate - just shows how much the back ends have in common!

Before I had it, @garycox had it for 5? odd years and did a decent number of miles. Despite the tiredness and so on around the edges, it's a fantastic car.

I bought it in 2015 I think, from a friend’s dad, he’d had it quite a while. I was working in Harrogate in Feb-May 2016 and drove it up from Sussex every week. Still miss it! Glad it’s still about

I’m taking the Mondeo on a 240 mile round trip on Saturday so I thought I’d treat it to a part worn, I was running it on its spare wheel as the day I picked it up the original tyre wasn’t holding air. I managed to get a part worn at my local tyre place for £40 fitted. The window motor still isn’t here which is a bit annoying as I wanted to fit that before I headed out on Sat.

Road trip time! I was a bit worried about this due to the clutch sometimes slipping, alas I did it anyway. 

Started off in Portsmouth, then had our first stop at Sutton Scotney Services for breakfast. 
 

Next stop was Brackley Antique Cellar, I’ve always wanted to take the wife here, she absolutely loved it. 

After our shopping spree we took a drive to The Farmers Dog. I’ve been to Diddly Squat in the past but never had the chance to visit the pub. The queue for the food  was quite long however the queue for the bar was much shorter!

 

£6.50 later and 10 mins of waiting and I had a pint of Hawkstone. Never had it before and it’s not a bad drink tbh! Has more of an IPA taste to it then lager.

We then headed home,

71 miles later and we’re home, roughly 240 miles covered today in the Mondeo, the clutch definitely needs doing as it slipped a few times. Overall a pleasant journey and only 1/2 a tank of fuel used.  I also had to pick up a 12 pack of beer from The Farmers Dog!

Hope it’s not too much grief to get the clutch sorted - I remember reading it was quite an involved job due to things like subframe alignment and welded captive nuts that had a habit of breaking loose when trying to get it all unbolted.

My mechanic has quoted me a very reasonable price to change it, he’s also changing the master cylinder. He’s done a few MK1 Mondeos in the past

In other news I’ve managed to find a garage to keep the Mondeo in during winter, not only that but it’s a place that I can tinker and store other shite in, Still waiting for the window motor 😕
