Think there's a Y reg 206 booked in for MOT tomorrow, I'll be able to check and see if that has a physical lock or just a switch to answer your curiosity!

I imagine it will be whenever they went over to being BSI'd.

Modern cars with switches and latches don't have a mechanical lock per se, it's simply a case of the body control module (BSI in the case of PSA) "disabling" the button whenever the car is locked, which prevents the latch from releasing. Some cars have a physical override from inside, some don't! So as you say, it's entirely possible for one to fail in the closed position and possibly require destructive measures to open it.

Older cars without a BCM controlling everything will have a far less complex central locking system, so to keep costs down it would have been easier to have a physical key lock on the tailgate, and an internal release handle than to try and integrate a tailgate lock into the central locking system.

To be honest that sounds like the most logical explanation, but yes please to you checking the Y reg car, I was thinking about starting a register of cars fitted with the key lock as there really can’t be many left, like I say I’ve never seen another in person

That’s definitely a possibility too tbh it was 13 years ago so I can’t remember if it did or didn’t have central locking but surely even a base spec 206 in 1998 would have had central locking? I remember my 02 base spec had it, I now really want to see a key lock car in person to check if it’s got central locking

On the subject of 206’s and Just out of curiosity I did a reg check on my old SW and it appears to have been scrapped recently, sad as it was a great car

Did either 206 have an internal boot release?

It wouldn’t surprise me if the base model would not have an internal release and a key instead, and a higher spec model gains an internal release instead of the key.

If you mean like a floor mounted release like on a jap car, Not that I’m aware of, just an electronic external latch in the estate and a standard handle on the silver hatch that worked from the central locking

Checked the Y plate car, no key barrel in the tailgate

it's a GLX, which I *think* is quite a high trim level? But I'm not an expert on Peugeot trim levels...

I think you only got an external boot lock if your 206 had no remote central locking - which was only the case with the poverty-spec version of the pre-facelift model. I don't think I've ever seen one of those in the metal.

My V reg pre mux GTi had central locking and no key slot but a physical handle (not a button) to open the boot.

I'd be surprised if a base spec 206 in 1998 had had central locking as standard. I think it was still normal for base spec versions of small cars to come without central locking then

So after a few weeks tinkering away on the ZT we now have an MOT, I didn’t want to document it as I just wanted the car sorted and having to stop every few minutes to take pictures wouldn’t have helped 😆 it failed the first time on it missing 2 hubnuts from the rear wheel, where they went and how Mr WC or I didn’t notice is honestly beyond me, still on the walk to the MOT centre to collect the ZT I saw a c6 with @richykitchy behind the wheel

After collecting the MG all seemed well until it stalled at a set of lights and was very reluctant about re starting and when it did eventually cough back into life it’d stall as soon as I’d put it into gear ‘ungrateful sod’ though through some absolute stoke of luck my dad happened to drive by and offered to tow me off the main road and back to his house which was just a few roads away

By this point i had already rang Mr WC who was on his way to help get the ZT home but just as I got back to my parents I get a text saying his 75 had just dumped all its coolant out and he was waiting on the RAC 🤦‍♀️

so here we are now forced to use the Austin, literally the only reason we got the ZT mot’d was so I wouldn’t have to use the Austin so much

So the prognosis on the ZT is a demagnetised flywheel, according to the garage, which is rather odd as it had new clutch and flywheel in 2021, goes to show the quality of modern parts 😒

Luckily Mr WC has had the week off so he’s been cracking on getting the 75 fixed, it turns out the thermostat housing had exploded, new parts are being collected and fitted today!

So little update, the 75 is all fixed now and behaving itself, the ZT came back from the garage yesterday with the Crank sensor and flywheel replaced and all was well, I was running around the city quite happily, but as soon as I got on the motorway it stalled in the 3rd lane, I managed to coast it into the hard shoulder,

waited 3 and a half hours for the RAC to show up and as soon as he cranked it the bloody thing started, Mr WC thinks it might be the cam sensor as it’s had basically everything else replaced so that’s going to be the next thing to do, strangely I’ve been driving it around the city all day today and it’s been fine, it just doesn’t like the motorway it seems, I have to admit for a 20 year old car it still looks surprisingly modern and just drives and handles so nicely.

One thing I had to do something about was the headlining, it was sagging so badly and getting in my face so I’ve temporarily bodged it with drawing pins.

it doesn’t look the best and is quite crooked but I’m planning on getting a new headlining sooner rather than later anyway, I want to try and find a black headliner really

ZTs just look so 'right'. I really wish I had space for one, no real use for it but it's just one of those cars I'd like for the sake of owning one. I do toy with selling the Skoda and finding a CDTi ZT to run around in instead, but the Skoda is tiny and great for what I use it for.

it feels great to drive with the 1.8 non turbo in mine, I bet the v8 is a belter, especially in supercharged 400bhp form

Despite the chocolate slave cylinders I've never heard of a 75/ZT needing a new DMF, they are incredibly robust and rarely go out of spec. I haven't read back but what was up with it?

Providing you can get the headliner out (admittedly a lot harder with a saloon than an estate) you should be able to recover it in whatever colour you want providing you can find it. Hard plastics can be dyed if you can't find replacements.

I got my supplies from an eBay seller, I just don't remember which one, it was a while ago.

Some quick pics of the Shad as promised, Mr WC already wants to take it out in Convoy with the Guy Arab when that’s back on the road so expect some Rolls and Bus action soon, I also took it to work this morning and managed to attract a crowd almost instantly mainly from my colleagues who were probably wondering if the CEO of First Bus had just showed up for a random Audit 😆

I’d like to give it a really good wash and detail very soon as it got absolutely filthy from the drive home yesterday

The first thing that struck me and I’m sure it would anyone is now far away the front of the car is when you’re behind the wheel, I feel like I need a pair of long distance glasses to see the Silver lady 😆 in terms of driving, don’t get me wrong I love it but the engine doesn’t feel as torquey as I was expecting, the Pontiac had buckets more torque and pulled away from the line with a lot more eagerness, obviously I’m not expecting it to pull like a sports car but for a 6.75 ltr v8 to be slower off the line than a 1980s American MPV is a little disappointing, again it doesn’t really bother me as I’m never going to gun it at a set of lights or what have you anyway but it’d still be nice to have that extra power in reserve if that makes sense? The only way to describe how vague the steering is is to compare it to the poll position arcade machine or similar extremely light 80s driving games, it almost doesn’t feel connected to the wheels and the light steering can easily catch you out in corners if you aren’t prepared, comfort is honestly unmatched, it just wafts down the road like nothing else of the period, the only big saloon I had of a similar period was my Peugeot 404 and that almost feels like driving a piece of wood compared to this, truly amazing. Brakes leave a lot to be desired, they aren’t great but I put that down to them needing work over them just being bad

Never say never, whist I have no plans to sell it any time soon I know what I’m like with motor vehicles, I’m 23 and this is my 42nd, but I have always lusted over a Shad since I was a young girl, I used to collect these Bond cars and mags when I was about 8 and the Shadow was always my favourite, I promised myself I’d own a real one one day obviously believing it’d never happen so to actually own one now even a tatty one is still a huge novelty and puts such a huge grin on my face and all the while it does that I’m keeping it
