Neil clark Posted June 16, 2022 Posted June 16, 2022 A little story, I haven't used autotrader for years, I like ebay. Some right twat accepted an offer then dissappeared straight after which removes the listing meaning id have to pay again! Having listed my SLK on autotrader about 4-5 days ago it sold tonight, really nice bloke that asked normal sensible questions, got a little more than I thought I might which pays for the advert Overall I nice experience and ill deffo use it again Obviously gumtree and Facebook were just the dregs.... Cheers all! St.Jude, Dan_ZTT, Flat4 and 11 others 14
95 quid Peugeot Posted June 16, 2022 Posted June 16, 2022 Cool, well done,I think I'll have a punt with mine on there, how much was ad ? Neil clark 1
Neil clark Posted June 16, 2022 Author Posted June 16, 2022 I think £46 for 3 weeks. Had 2 inquiries and second had it. People seem alot more normal.... 95 quid Peugeot 1
AnnoyingPentium Posted June 16, 2022 Posted June 16, 2022 I bought my car off of Autotrader, definitely seems more civilised than eBay in most cases. Barry Cade 1
sierraman Posted June 16, 2022 Posted June 16, 2022 I’ve said it before but cheap arse places to advertise attract cheap arse people. Gumtree, Facebook etc is free but it’s the stomping ground of the penniless. stripped fred, 500tops, mk2_craig and 2 others 5
Ghosty Posted June 16, 2022 Posted June 16, 2022 Auto Trader private sellers are generally good eggs.
Barry Cade Posted June 16, 2022 Posted June 16, 2022 I bought my SLK on Autotrader, it was just like it used to be.. phone seller, arrange to view, test drive, agree a price, cup of coffee, sort V5, shake hands and leave with car. I think its free to advertise under a grand? stripped fred, AnnoyingPentium, Neil clark and 2 others 5

I think its free to advertise under a grand? My only irritation is that a number of car dealers put the price per month in, so if you search with a filter up to £7000, it will show you cars that are actually £32000, but only £700 a month. Datsuncog Posted June 16, 2022 Posted June 16, 2022 +1 for AutoTrader - my latest heap came from there too. Definitely less mouth-breathery than Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace. The seller could string a sentence together and answer questions in a non-evasive way. The 'free below £1k' ad option probably explains the price point of £975 asked for the 'Rolla. stripped fred Posted June 16, 2022 Posted June 16, 2022 That does look nice. I agree that autotrader does usually have a better chance of finding a private owner who has looked after their car and who speaks proper English. Price may be a bit more though.
RoverFolkUs Posted June 17, 2022 Posted June 17, 2022 Anybody know if the free under £1k thing is something recent? I seem to remember private sellers getting a basic 1 week advert with 5 photos for free, one ad at a time with no mention about price point? Granted I haven't actually sold a car for more than £1000, erm, ever I don't think! Not until prices have shot up, and so will mine accordingly when my Focus hits the market soon. That'll be annoying because I wanted to use Autotrader, but I won't be paying almost £50 because I'm asking ~£200 over the threshold. I loathe using Gumtree or eBay, and certainly won't be touching FB (unless I want to reel in some messages for a laugh and the stupid messages thread ) I'll have to brave Gumtree I guess, and just stick it on Autotrader for an extra £100 or so if it doesn't sell elsewhere 🤷♂️
New POD Posted June 17, 2022 Posted June 17, 2022 In the 90s it was a thing that it was cheaper below a price point.

cort16 Posted June 17, 2022 Posted June 17, 2022 Auto trader is the place normal people go to buy normal cars. Not a great place to sell a Matra Rancho but the best place for modern ish stuff if you can stomach their fees. GR8 PL8 M8 1

Datsuncog Posted June 17, 2022 Posted June 17, 2022 'Bargain Buys' section, I think the sub-£500 bit was titled - aka Shite Corner...
Eyersey1234 Posted June 17, 2022 Posted June 17, 2022 My old Focus was advertised on Autotrader when I bought it, would certainly use again.
Scruffy Bodger Posted June 17, 2022 Posted June 17, 2022 I bought my 405 SRDT off the trader a few years back, the search functions are great compared to a lot of sites.
sierraman Posted June 17, 2022 Posted June 17, 2022 There seems fewer ‘just cuts out over 2000rpm but never bothered me’ cunts on there.
I_am_Diesel Posted June 17, 2022 Posted June 17, 2022 I have sold two vehicles quickly and easily on Auto Trader. E Bay on the other hand ☹️ Bamboocarman 1
St.Jude Posted January 3 Posted January 3 Holy mighty thread resurrection, but only because it involves the “Reserve” function on AutoTrader which @Kiltox was on about in another thread - and I can’t for the life of me remember what recent thread it was. But here we are. Anyway. I have been looking on AutoTrader for a Berlingo and I find one that is pretty much what I need and not in the other end of the country. Done my due diligence as much as I can and the MOT history isn’t horrific. Car itself looks fine and in quite good knick. I’m on paternity leave this coming week so thought fuck it, buy it and swap in the Subaru and just have the job jobbed. So I reserve the car, paid the £99, and said I’ll be round Monday. I’ve been busy today but look at the phone and see emails from AutoTrader and the dealer has cancelled/declined the reservation and has messaged “Pls call to confirm appointment or reserve”. My £99 is still with AutoTrader as they want me to confirm if I’ve bought the car or not. I understand from what @Kiltox said about nothing stopping someone from reserving a dealers stock, but this just feels a wee bit off? Shame too as the car seems alright. I’ve rang the fucker twice with no answer so I don’t think the car is a goer.
sierraman Posted January 3 Posted January 3 I can’t imagine buying a car for proper actual money but not going and seeing it or the garage. The times over the years I’ve looked at cars and they’ve sounded the bollocks then you get there and it’s a heap of shit or I didn’t like the garage.

Dealers are fighting against it by doing this kind of thing and it’s just pissing the customer off. St.Jude 1

It doesn’t feel so bad if you know the deposit can be returned, and the car is only an hour away so it doesn’t feel that much of a step in to the unknown. sierraman 1

DVee8 Posted January 3 Posted January 3 Have a look on Youtube, for THE LOGBOOK, Highpeak autos and Shifting metal. They have all discussed it. THE LOGBOOK had a sit-down Q&A with Autotrader.
hairnet Posted January 3 Posted January 3 actually speak to the dealer and reserve it? shoulda swerved the autotrader colino and CGSB 2
colino Posted January 3 Posted January 3 Autotrader will have to bin their roll out of world domination. The trader doesn't have your reservation fee, Autotrader does and as has already been discussed, there are now more downsides to the plans that the traders, paying their fat fees, are now actively looking for alternatives.
