At least he's had the decency to actually tell you @JJ0063, not just let you show up and find out for yourself

Edit - agree about the fault tho

Oh yeah I agree

She said when she had the injector done there was also a fault stored for “a filter” which they sorted but it came back a day or two later and they told her it’s because she does short journeys.

In other words the DPF is knackered.

As you say, I’m glad she’s told me so I don’t waste my time or money!

The BMW is now the main contender but mrs JJ really doesn’t like the colour or interior so that may be off too for an easy life. The hunt continues for now!

Well that’s the Caddy off the list anyway I think. What a load of bollocks. VAG are very sensitive to throwing the EML but that’s clearly an intermittent fault that hasn’t been fixed!

IIRC this is usually a sign the EGR and cooler are on the way out. A nice four figure repair job.

So go with the BMW, which will no doubt at some point also need a four figure repair job🤣

Mrs JJ likes this and the fact it’s tatty doesn’t bother me. My bodywork guy owes me a favour so the bumper could be sorted cheap and a bolt on wing is easily sorted. It’s also 10 mins from my house.

If I could get it for say £2750, it looks like an alright option as a cheap dog carrier/comfy enough cruiser?

2 kisses though. I'd probably still go. Might end up with more than an old caddy 😉

I don’t have Facebook so I have to pretend to be Mrs JJ when I enquire about cars 😂 she might be more interested in Mrs JJ!

Just been on the phone with this guy. Seemed a nice enough chap. Bought it from copart and repaired it himself.

Said the only two issues are the airbag light comes on from time to time (VAG, TADTS)

Other issue he said is the climate seems to have a mind of its own and will sometimes blow ice cold air con when it’s set to hot, and vice versa. He said someone came to view yesterday and plugged it in and said it’s ‘something under the dash and is about £200 for the part’ - my concern is that he’s then not bought it.

Fuck I hate buying cars. Who’d have thought it. Ironic really!

You are looking at bottom of the barrel, old (for most people), high miler German stuff! Almost all would consider this end of life but just that COVID inflation hasn't fully worn off the prices yet.

My concern of a premium German diesels on that age is if it has a Bosch CP4 pump that could suddenly write the whole thing off mechanically.

Oh I agree, high mileage never puts me off - I barely look at the mileage tbh. I know it comes with the type of car as you say. I’m usually pretty good at finding the hidden gems but there’s plenty of shit about at the moment!

Considering telling Mrs JJ she can get a bus pass if she’s that offended by the colour scheme of the 5 series.

I prefer the look of that A6 but already concerned by the issue he mentioned, and I don’t know them.

BMW I know them inside out, I know all the right noises, just feel more comfortable.

TADTS...

I imagine the issue is a blend control motor that is broken and/or loosing it's position. Probably deep in the bowels of the dash and a hand scratching fight to replace.

I did really like our A4 B8 until it shat it's high pressure fuel pump at 210k miles. 🙃

You can risk losing your shirt on any car that you buy nowadays.

Blanket overgeneralization ahead - I never liked any of the modern(ish) Audis I've driven. Just too dampened, dull, and appliance-like. Interior parts shared with the rest of the VW group cars were a let-down on premium feel. I really couldn't consider a car that shared instrument cluster and switches with a Caddy premium, whatever premium may mean.

I much preferred BMWs.

Why not an early PD Caddy instead of the newer engine variants? I see those pretty cheap quite often now.

Mainly because of the lack of air con on 99% of them to be honest, it’s a real must with the dogs! I’ve been checking any that do look half suitable 👍

Get it wrapped for advertising the business.... break the colour up. TBH, it's your car and your driving it! ..... my 'other' Car is white and the wife refers to it as 'a cocks car' and refuses to be a passenger in it so we use her ferral X1 or my BMW on the rare occasions we travel in a vehicle together.

If you're looking for a big-engined German diesel estate, you could always buy my Merc, spend a couple of hundred quid tidying up the arches and getting the aircon fixed, and then blow the rest on coke and hookers.

Just a suggestion.

I’ve never gelled with Merc. Shame as I’m sure it’d be a good idea!

From experience, only having vans in the household becomes a pain in the arse as soon as you have to take loads of stuff to the tip or help others/give lifts etc.

our local tip allows vans, been in all sorts with no issues

Genuinely can’t recall the last time I had a passenger in any of the cars, it’s only ever us and the dogs 👍

Just had a thought, are these still a dry belt? Anyone know? @sierraman?

My brief research looks to be dry belt and no ablue, so same engine as in our 2013 Berlingo
