Hopefully no news is good news.

Yeah I’ve heard nothing and would likely have by now if something was horrific or they were pulling a fast one.

Seems a very fair price and everyone came out of it ok. I think they should be very happy at that. There is not really much viable at under £4000.

Happy for you.

I agree with buying something you can weigh in or something " white goods" that you can offload easily.

As for selling privately only very cheap stuff sells easily - people don't have the cash to buy expensive stuff privately and they are naturally concerned that if they buy a pup there is no comeback.

For me on the bigger engined stuff - the high VED is also weighing on the market. And with diesels they are increasingly losing access to some cities etc.

We are in a period of flux and uncertainty in all this.

Labour rates for even anything minor are also a factor and parts.

But on the other hand stuff is going as long as it is cheap.

So it's a buyers market IMHO.

One annoying thing too is that I had a shortlist of cars to jump on if/when this sold. That list really only existed for a week and had 6 cars on it. 4 are spoken for/gone, 1 is a Peugeot Partner that smokes when it’s cold on start, and the last one I am waiting from the seller to see if his buyer is having it today. If not I’ll get it tomorrow, but if that’s gone then there is one Berlingo to suit me in the whole country and it’s in fucking Brighton. If the Peugeot smoking on start is a simple fix etc then I’d risk it as it’s only £1,500 and I’ve a budget to fix it.

But the wife, bless her, is doing her best to show me cars that aren’t Partners/Berlingos and sent me a C5 Tourer which is a lovely car but it’s too lovely at the same time for what I want.

There’s a few of us down this way, if you do need a hand with logistics/initial viewing/tea drinking. I’m happy to help and I’m sure others will be too.

Do you provide tyre kicking and teeth-sucking services also, or is that extra?

Well I've got Monday off (St.Patricks day so a day in the pub holy day of obligation) that I was going to use for getting a car.

The one in Brighton is this one: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202502229391423?sort=relevance&searchId=24c9de59-ded5-4506-a40e-3c45cd147851&advertising-location=at_cars&make=Citroen&model=Berlingo&page=2&postcode=dy8 2rr&price-to=3000&fromsra

But nearer, sorry "nearer", to me is this one:

I have rang about it already, the line was shit but he said there is some smoke on a cold start but clears up when it's warm. It's been a long time since I had that 1.6 HDi in anything but I remember at the time there were things about turbos on their way out which I can't remember would be indicated by smoking on start. Friend of mine suggested injectors, saw the colour I went because of the Land Cruiser's injectors and followed it by the price not being horrendous and the job isn't too bad.

He will do "Last price xbox 2nite m9" for £50.

For £10, I can examine every nut and bolt on the car like it’s some sort of day-dreamer concourse, then sap the seller’s will to live by reeling off every engine, gearbox and trim configuration for the entire production run of the vehicle. For an extra £2, I can expand on this part of the service by then reeling off increasingly unhinged stories of my uncle/postman/dog/etcetera’s ownership experience.

I conclude the viewing by telling the seller that I can’t possibly buy the car as I need to ask my wife first, and then never contacting them again.

I knew it was you ringing me on Monday offering me £4,000 but anything more than that involved your wife.

Aye, the red one looks like it's been repainted by Stevie Wonder and it has an Aberdeen reg.

AVOID.

I live just outside Aberdeen and neither of my cars have Scottish reg numbers. I'm not joking when I say avoid!

Thanks @Noel Tidybeard and @Supernaut - didn't know or twig they were scotch.

Search is over though. I made an offer on something and it's been accepted...

Well I will be now!

Have put the deposit down on the new whip. Likely to pick it up Monday but trying to see if he'll do tonight instead. Won't say what it is, but it is a trek and I think it'll all be a nice surprise.

Hint: It's not a fucking Toyota.

I've had deals like that offered.

If the car dealer has the keys in a bowl, rather than a security cabinet, back away slowly.

That’s too subtle for me. I only start to wonder if there’s something untoward going on when the seller is wearing the keys like a cock ring and is doing an impression of a windmill.

My van does this on first start of the morning. It's only done it since I had the dpf bashed out. Maybe this has had the same done.

Where's the hidden camera? It must be in my house somewhere because that's my exact routine before going to bed each night.

I demand to know how you know this.

I didn't know where to put this but thought there may be LC lickers on this thread.

Today I was driving towards Shenington (near Banbury) and followed what I think was an 80s Land Cruiser.

Slightly unusual maybe, but not that interesting... Except it looked new. I mean brand new.  Totally immaculate, including the underside.

The body style was one of those 'short' pickups, possibly with a 4-seater cab (I couldn't tell). It was on trade plates.

Had a V6 badge on the back, couldn't smell clag so presumably pez.

What's going on? Has Toyota started making these again a la Jaguar E-type?

Bonus spot - an R5 turbo as in the mid engined rally car, in Renault works livery (yellow/white). Mega.

No photos, obviously. But this Wikipedia pic is very similar although the one I saw had slightly flared rear arches.

Did it have an 80s reg or just the body style? I think they still make the older models in some markets. Australia maybe?

Likely something to do with this lot:

https://rowlandsandhordonautomotivesolutions.co.uk/vehica_template/vehicle-search-results-templates/

If I was looking to spend £70k on a brand new rugged 4x4 I'd not be buying a Grenadier, put it that way.

Interesting!

What markets are Toyota making these for then? Africa?

Almost certainly what you say, because I forgot until I looked at the RHSA website that the car I saw had a snorkel.

I'm with you actually, if you need a dependable off-roader without unnecessary glitz, I can't think of anything better.
