I can't stand 99% of popular music, so I can't listen to music radio stations. It's either Radio 4 or my mp3 player.

Speculative mail. Since the local authority published my planning application, seemingly every builder within a 25 mile radius has decided to mail shot me. This is fair enough in itself – times are hard and whilst I’d never select tradesmen on this basis, I presume people must or they wouldn’t do it.

I do however take exception to them skimping on the postage and leaving me a bill to pay in order to retrieve said mail shot from the local transfer depot. Faced with an anonymous large manila (no sender details) I had no choice but to pay the money.

Returning home I find another Royal Mail card through the door advising me to visit the transfer depot I’ve just come from. That and another threatening letter from the TV Licensing tossers who, despite being advised in writing (and several times by telephone) do not seem to understand the term building site. The paragraph that refers to home visits would appear to be bollocks too. 3 times I’ve invited you to come round and admire my lack of television and 3 times you’ve told me you don’t do home visits.

My Mother says I’m turning into Victor Meldrew. I think she may be right

Same on the tv licence. Except I was building for 8 years. lol.

They did come round twice, once a shifty looking bloke who wouldn't come in after I answered the door in respirator and welding gloves.

Second was a double team of bloke and bird, actually came in for a snoop around but seemed more interested in the new kitchen... I was standing in front of a cupboard as I'd forgot that I put a 15" lcd in it the week before to keep the dust off it. 8) Moved in now so paying weekly as it's for sale.

If you have the extreme good fortune to live in Manchester you get 106.1 Rock Radio, hosted by ex-Top Gear bike dude Steve Berry. X-FM come a close second but they're a bit too Yoof for me.

crikey, who needs a wireless these days?

the technological advances of the 33RPM disk has surely rendered it obsolete?

Florence and the Machine's cover of Candi Staton's "You got the love".I don't like many late 80's / early 90's dance tunes, but the Staton version is a classic* and some bird squawking it out of tune whilst looking like Noel Fielding in a ginger wig is not bloody good enough.Arrgh.* 'Classic' used in the same way as it is when used to define a Marina.

/\Whs. Wogan got on my tits when he was on telly every bastard minute but don't mind him now.Personally I'd have given Mark and Lard the breakfast slot, fucked old toffee bollocks Evans off to midnight on Tuesdays and then taken Steve Wright to the top of a lift shaft and threatened to throw him down the bastard if he sung/talked over records or interrupted his guests ever again.

Wrighty gets away with it with me only because;A: I remember listening to him on Luxembourg in the late 70's.B: 'Ask Elvis'.

So, correct me if I'm reading this wrong: You have a partially built house, that the TV Licensing people have latched onto as HAVING NO LICENCE. So you must buy one, as they won't come around to see that it is infact a building site with no TV, yet they cannot comprehend that someone with an address might not have a TV. So they'll keep demanding money for the TV that you don't have until, well, evAr.

Pretty much yes. It’s an existing (soon to be partially demolished) house, but it’s not habitable which would be quite apparent from just a drive by visit. I take exception to the tone of their letters which imply I’m dishonest. This time I’m going to ignore everything they send and wait for their so-called enforcement team to get involved. At which point I’ll pass the matter over to my barrister friend. Who will sue them

+ another 1. It's grim. I've no problem with covers that re-interpret but this is just another cash in clone attempt. Sorry. All this talk of Stevie V and Ms Staton has caused me to start browsing ebay in order to complete my collection of Deep Heat compilations 8)

Radio 2 is turning to shit at a rapid rate of knots. If they're not playing that fucking awful Cheryl Cole garbage 5-6 times a day it's either Michael bastard Buble or Jamie Fucking Callum, dreadful easy listening shit for bored housewives.Sarah Kennedy is barking mad but she's okay and old Terrence is a legend - Ken Bruce is a plastic Wogan ripoff but he's not so bad. Jeremy Vine is bearable, Steve Wright is an blaring loudmouth gobshite. When Wogan goes I'll probably start listening to something else. I like Chris Evans, but not before 9am.

Good luck with the sale! Don't think I could cope with 8 years of chaos. 4 years of it is driving me mad as it is.

The problem is what else is there , at work we have Radio 2 on tues and thurs , radio 1 on friday the other days are local radio , this is utter toss , same adverts over and over and over again , they seem to only have 5 CDs , guarenteed if say Abbas played early on then they appear 4 or 5 times during the day ," weve got the Abba CD out so lets play the whole fugging thing" , stupid quizes , inept DJs , utter tripe

I can't really get on with music radio at all now. So I tend to listen to R5 Live. On the way home I quite like Peter Allen but Nicky Cambell in the morning is enough to induce murder. Plus the breakfast show is quite repetitive so during the course of my 90 minute commute I hear the same thing four times.Tried R4 which is OK but can be a bit too serious and require too much thought from me at that time of the morning.

I once asked in Halfords if they did a DAB car radio, but it was special order and about three times the price of a normal FM item with extortionate fitting costs, plus they couldn't guarantee you'd even get reception.A gap in the market?

Posted

My DAB radio cost £130 in 2005. It was supposed to need a separate aerial for DAB but I just soldered a link wire between the two aerial terminals. It works perfectly as long as the aerial is long enough (which it never is on modern cars, even for FM reception) and isn't amplified.Reception is excellent in most areas I've been to, and much better than any DAB radio I've seen with a pukka aerial.

given that I'm the head of music at the radio station I work at i can give you a bit of an idea why the same tunes get played over and over again. Most people only tune in to the radio for an average of 20 minutes, so the idea is that whenever they switch on they hear a great song, and listen a bit longer /more often than they otherwise would have. The station I work at plays the A list tunes (Currently Cheryl Cole, JLS etc) about one every three hours which means you should only hear the same song at most twice if you listen for a full working day, but I know some stations play them every 90 minutes. If you expand the playlist to make it less repetitive the listening figures go down. Mad but true. The last station I worked at used to play a fairly good variety but cut it right down when a new boss arrived, to the point that the music was driving me nuts.. playing the same songs twice every show etc.But the listening figures went up by 1/3, and are now higher than they have been for nearly ten years. Moral - the vast majority of punters just want the same stuff over and over again. Don't blame the station!

Aye, same here. I think I stomached about another 17 minutes listening to Jo Wily before her 'right on old student' snivelling got right on my tits and I jibbed R1.Funny to think now though I'd rather munch 25,000 Pro Plus per day and drink 500 cups of coffee to listen to her 24 hours a time than five minutes spent listening to that fat fucking gobshite Moyles. Or that incredibly grating Irish bint and the bloke she did the show with. R1 can fuck right off on the first funky moped to oblivion and burn in hell forever.Always surprised another station didn't go all out to sign Mark and Lard. They were geuinely funny, never tried too hard, played decent music and worth every penny and more of whatever they got paid.
Posted

Mark and Lard got shafted because they were put onto breakfast and the figures nosedived. I think they have the record for the lowest ever R1 breakfast figures.Their show just didnt work at early o clock, they were much more suited to afternoons... and no presenter picks the music they play.. its all scheduled by the head of music or prog. controller beforehand so half the time whoever is on is hating what they are playing

Mark and Lard, legends. I always thought it was probably because of the Southerners not liking London being called London Village etc. Well, I hoped it was.

Cortina Dave , cheers for the insite , does make sence but not to people who listen to it all day , suppose whe are the minority then

I hate music radio stations, they rarely play anything that I could listen to, this includes classical, rock and folk stations. The last show that I could was Gideon Coe on R6. I am a misery guts and most music that's played is commercially successful, i.e. manipulatively shiny happy music with weak lyrics, identical rhythms and a major key, usually they're some sort of love song. I hate them all because they don't tell a story that's not been told before or tell it in a way that is engaging. All that I can surmise is that the general public are sheep who don't want to think for themselves.

Yeah agree, but these Heart stations to really get on my tits, and why are the female presenters on the breakfast show so whiny, They really make my piss boil with their screechy voices!.Also agree that Mark and Lard were legends, I used to laugh my socks of when they was on in the afternoon, I loved the spoof quiz shows and the catchphrases, Stop.... Carry On!Still have there album they released somewhere, The worst album in the world... ever!.Now Alex Lester on Radio 2 at about 4 in the morning does a good show with some great music as does Keith Chegwin's sister, Janice Long, Trouble is all the best stuff is on in the early hours of the morning when on one listens!.

Agree the heart stations are cack. I try to balance things a bit at the station I work at so its not as repetitive as most as I know a lot of workplaces in the area have us on all day.. heart play take that every chuffing hour which makes me want to rip my stereo out of the dash and hurl it out the window
