See stacks of Dyson vacuum cleaners at the tip every time I go which is weekly lately , ive got a 29 year old Henry cleaner that still sucks fine , changed a cable and also the head unit coz the brush wore out , not bad for something used 2 or 3 times a week .

I believe the early Dyson were UK made, quite good, and once a good rep was earned production moved abroad. So are probably Chinese made shit now. I've rebuilt a '70s Hoover upright for the missus, quite a low power motor, although seems to function just as well as any modern 20 Kw 400 BHP modern shit, only very quietly. Also has a headlamp, A feckin headlamp! Vacuum cleaner design has followed car design, all manner of features and specification to look attractive, but in reality are futile and pointless, designed primarily to be a lifestyle status trinket rather than of any fucking use.

We have had a dyson for a few years, its got proper shit lately though! Refuses to pick up quite a lot. Still, its lasted better than the ones it replaced, including some horrific Electrolux contraption (the one they marketed as some amazing vaccuum back in the late 90s) which broke down more times than we used it. Maybe a Henry hoover is the way to go, they are great things.

My grump is that i knelt on a rock earlier on the soft bit immediatly under your knee. Bloody still hurts!

Industrial-Spec Nilfisk FTW! My folks bought one in 1986 and it is still used 2/3 times a week in a house containing various dogs and cats, and has never gone wrong. In today's money it was about £225-250.

I spotted a driveway in Dudley this afternoon that had a very scruffy Metro, an Imp that looked like it hadn't moved for a good few years and I think the other thing was a Chevette (or possibly a Viva). Should have taken a photo.

No doubt Wat and MM5 will spot it over the weekend.

 Pete that last bit was great.

Grump (and it's car related-ish) .... i need to start wearing gloves, as dirty is fook hard to get out from under the nails :)

Other than that, be prepaired to see a thread on doing some work on a Cortina

We bought a new Dyson about a month ago - it's great! Sucks like a 18 year old girl after a few alcopops. Cat hair is banished from this house!

It replaced another Dyson which was about 8 year old. That'd never been the same since I used it to suck up large quantities of damp plaster dust when we replastered the house four years ago. Sort of bunged its insides up and despite numerous efforts to clean it, it was never the same again.

Anyway, this being the grumpy thread, erm, since we bought it last month Currys have knocked 10% off the price in a 'sale'.

They have about four different filters. Once they block up the first thing you notice is that lack of suck. The next thing that happens is that the motor burns out. Find and change all the filters (or simply toss them if you don't have allergies or whatever) and it will be like new. The air that is sucked into the hoover is also the air that cools the motor so no suck eventually overheats the motor.

I had one of the original Dysons but it wasn't a robust design. The flexible hose thing split quite quickly. Then the filters blocked and burnt out the motor. Finally the on/off switch burnt out which is when I got sick of it and bought a cheap hoover from Argos.

Also, Dysons are fuck all use for cleaning cars. Can't beat a Henry or one of his bigger brothers for that.

If you want a 'cylinder' hoover, buy a Henry - still made in the UK by a British company as well!

If you want an upright hoover, buy a Miele or Sebo - German made and will last a lot longer than (most) Dysons.

Makes that were good in the 1970s/1980s - Bissel, Goblin, Hoover, Electrolux, etc are all invariably cheap Chinese made shit now. A Dyson is better than any of them.

Most Dysons we've had have been OK, but they need regular filter cleans, they don't like 'pattern' filters/parts, and they need regular unblocking of various tubes etc. Personally I don't see the point in a 'ball' one.

The fans and hand dryers are excellent products, though. As far as I know, all Dyson hoovers are made in their own factory in Malaysia.

I use a 1970's kirby cleaner, £20 from a boot sale...well built and sucks better than the above 18 year old on Alcopops :lol:

yeh, as already stated - dysons DO need filters cleaning. People buy them and think they don't need to do anything with them other than emptying them.

We have a DC04 that I got from the tip for a fiver and have been using it for about 5 years now, I have a spare one the same and I also got one for my mum!

Early ones also got chucked because the power lead broke where it goes into the machine, again a very easy fix.

I also bought one of those small ones that looks like a jet pack from the tip once. It looked brand new and sure enough, when I took it apart all it had in it was a big hair clip and some pine needles blocking it.....and someone had chucked it away!!

I sold it for £150 on ebay - happy days.

Yeh, but you need to be Arnold Schwarzenneger to use the things coz they weigh as much as a small car!!

I have a Google toolbar next to my internet window, and currently it has a headline on it regarding Mick Jaggers todger. Great.

On the subject of household appliances, I bought a Candy tumble dryer 19 years ago and its still going strong...it was the cheapest one in the shop at the time. Never let me down and gets used three or four times a week.

On the other hand, bought a Hitachi flat screen TV eighteen months ago for £299 and its bust already. Had to send it for repair last week at a cost of £115. Bah!!

Two weeks later belt breaks which is going to cost about £50 to get fixed and leaves me to clear up the contents of the hoover it has just shit all over the living room carpet.

belts are dead cheap on ebay and very easy to change yourself (at least they are on DC04's and 07's)

There is something about consumer law that means it should last a 'reasonable' time. After 6 months the onus is on you to prove it was an inherent fault though:

This is the worst advert even before it is obviously dubbed:

"Mum, why did you turn into an Asian lady at the end?"

I always found this advert very perplexing. The lads thought process was obviously "Hmm..okay I need a shit, I must take a pen and paper with me into the toilet just in case my shit stinks that much that I temporarily loose the ability to speak and that touch and fresh think has run out and I need to communicate that to Mum through the door."

Looking at his drawing ability he is obviously highly advanced for his age which makes me wonder why he didnt check the air freshener before having a shit!

Maybe he should have had a "Poo at Pauls" Instead? :D

Finally got the possibility of a not-completely-shit part time job lined up. The trouble is, it's in Bolton. Had to chase the agency like mad to see if they'd received my application. I'd been shortlisted but no one decided to tell me this, probably because they were all out the back picking their arse.

No doubt I'll get there and the job will be completely different to the one listed online. They already admitted to getting the wage wrong.

Its all these terrible job losses thats happening / might happen at the mo especially with the MOD report tomorrow, I seem to be tuned in on a sub concious level

Sent the "new" fezza for its MOT. FAIL

N/S/F wheel bearing excess noise

O/S/R seatbelt anchorage corroded to excess within whatever it is.

N/S/R tyre borked

N/S/F Wiper not very good

Something about the rear lights not working right (new one on me)

So, not too bad really, although I was hoping it would squeak a pass and I could deal with the rumbly bearing at my leisure. Bah!

More worrying is the list of advisories.

Underside rusty everywhere (not that bad i'm sure!)

Slight travel on handbrake

O/S/R tyre nearly borked

Power steering pipes rusty

Oil leak from engine

Oil leak has covered rack with oil.

Parking brake needs adjustment/repair

Front brakes require adjustment or repair

O/S/F bearing slight play (checked it yesterday and there seemed to be zero play...)

I do have a pair of 13" tyres I can sling on the back, they are of a different size to the front but if it means an inexpensive MOT pass then i'm game. I was hoping to get a cheap set of alloys anyway..

There's a few others that I can't remember right now. The garage describe Fords as cheap and nasty which is why they always need so much work come MOT time!

Oh well, I guess it is a bit leggy for a fiesta so it has to be expected.

On the plus side it should be MOT'd for tomorrow. Atleast this all puts it firmly in the "banger" category meaning I don't have to wash it every weekend or worry about where its parked e.t.c.

Get your pedantry right then man! Fibreglass filler is not really going to be necessary on a fridge.
