The grumpy thread

Looks like I've stumbled into cycleshite "your riding is our concern"

Can we all just agree that some cyclists are knobheads, some drivers are knobheads.

Personally I'd rather cyclists were lit up like christmas trees than riding around like friggin Ninjas.

Todays grump is the fact the heating is on full blast in my building. It is electric heating. The transformers for the building are in my lab. I think you can see where this is going.

Transformer hum is a really pleasant noise. It really is.

I drive a few hundred miles a week at the moment, all but a few miles of it town driving, I think everyone on the road here in St Andrews is a Knobhead. It's impressive that my car still has a nose given people's desire to pop out from concealed side streets at speed. Almost got written off (both me and the car) by a taxi van thing pulling into the junction I was approaching on the wrong side above the speed limit (taxi, not me).

I think given pizza delivery drivers' reputation, I think if we think your driving's bad, it's probably quite bad. Actually, I think our reputation is somewhat ill deserved.

People donating money to the RSPCA and the British Heart Foundation must be delighted that some of their cash will be used to pay these charity's fines. Penalise those who make bad decisions, including the judiciary.

I'm hardly likely to be a VW customer any time soon, but likewise it seems pointless to bring the company down along with job losses for employees (which will inevitably include some in the UK). Hit the greedy fuckers who were behind pressuring dishonest management decisions.

Username on RR - "fad". Surely that should be spelt with a 'u' rather than an 'a'?

Or a d.i.c.k.

I am fuckin fuming, just had call from my insurance about my recent accident

http://autoshite.com/topic/26530-my-day-so-far/

Seems that in spite of the independant witness & the total disregard of road markings by other driver the accident is probably my fault, also other car has aquired passengers who have  all sustained whiplash.

What a load of old crap that is,was 100% their fault, and only one front  seat passenger was in their car

I ordered a pair of indicator bulbs for the mazda - is it too much to ask that they be the same colour ?

attachicon.gifIMG_3361.JPG

eBay seller was very apologetic and is sending a replacement out straight away, I wonder what colour that one will be :)

the replacement bulbs arrived quickly but look what I have now :

Son took his car (02 Saxo) to ATS to get the brakes sorted (very little pressure at the pedal and dislocate your shoulder handbrake).

Left it there and an hour later phone call from garage saying come back, it's bad news.

So we scoot back down there and the cars still up on the ramps, all 4 wheels off and both rear drums off.

Go into the garage and talk to the lad working on the car.

Bad news is new front pads, discs, rear cylinder (leaking),rear shoes, drum bearings, track rod ends and a new suspension arm.

All the time shaking his head.

While mech was listing parts needed son was on his phone, Eurocarparts website filling a virtual shopping basket.

Into the office to ask for the quote..............

£1024 I'll say that again,

£1024 on a £2-300 car.

I said that parts were about £150 to £200 tops and showed him the parts list and price.

He gets all sniffy and tells me, "We don't use Eurocarparts, we use a quality supplier".

Timing couldn't of been better, Eurocarparts van pulls into car park, driver gets out loads up a dolly thing, comes into the office and asks our man to sign for the delivery,

which he did with a bright red face (he signed with a pen in the glow from his face)

I asked him about the approx £800 labour when the car was ready for the parts to be fitted after 45mins work.

He just mumbled something and pointed at the computer screen.

Told him to put the car back together and we shall leave.

So they've been my jobs all week, inbetween rain showers (a good portion of the time try to undo the wheel nuts).

TLDR. ATS live down to reputation also hire the fattest man in Liverpool to tighten wheel bolts.

why dont you just go to a motor factors?

As a counterpoint, I took the BMW 316 to my local Halfords Autocentre for its MOT on Saturday. I wasn't sure what to expect.

They failed it on a major exhaust leak (I knew about that) and two brake pipes.

They fixed it all up yesterday and passed it. The brake pipes were a bit steep at £75 each (admittedly brake pipes can be a bastard to do, and they may have even needed to fabricate them from scratch), and repairing the exhaust was £55 (I'm guessing a whole new back box, not had a chance to have a proper look in the daylight yet), so a total of £205. The mileage hadn't even gone up at all since I left it there, so they hadn't taken the piss and taken it out for a test drive or anything. Totally professional. I'll deffo go back there for any future work.

I've not been to my local branch of ATS for a while, as they just seem massively incompetent. They once fitted winter tyres (which I supplied) to some Peugeot 205 GTi wheels I had, but they didn't have the removable centre. I phoned in advance to ask if this was OK "no problem" said the man there, "we have the adapter for the balancing machine." They didn't, and only told me this after they'd fitted the tyres. I told them to chuck the wheels in the back of the car and I'll go elsewhere for balancing. They obliged, and forgot to ask me for payment. I didn't remind them either!

I should have done that originally but these are paid for so can get sent back and replaced. I think the supplier is suitably embarrassed :)

Riding up the left hand side of a car/truck/bus etc should be classed as attempted suicide. If you really are too damn thick to see why it's dangerous then you're not fit to ride a push bike on the road.

Of course drivers should look, but it's not their fault if a fuck nugget is trying to die under their wheels.

In a nutshell. This is a spectacularly cretinous idea and, as such, will no doubt be made law in about 0.000000000446 seconds.

Meeting Ian (Dollywobbler) and his wife was pleasant. Also, finding that the ROFL ZX hadn't been set on fire or stolen from where I left was also good.

Wrong thread obviously^. Getting shafted for £148 by Hastings for cancelling the ZX insurance was a bit of a shock. Dunno how they've worked that out but whatever.

I put £30 of fuel in the new car that I'm having to return because it's a wankbox. I shall have to try and syphon the bloody thing out now.

Bloody Bentleys battery was flat. Like so flat it wouldn't illuminate a torch battery and the car needed serious help to get going. Did (and even managed to get it out of the garage without hitting anything!) and took it to Exeter to have it's £120 switch fitted (free, they buggered up the last one... so they say) and the car was still reluctant to start when there and the battery was showing 11.9 volts.

I'd have thought a run like that would have charged it right up?

Anyway, ran home (the car not me obviously) and it was starting as usual but I've taken the battery off (used my genuine Rolls Royce toolkit - it's even got a full set of spare bulbs in there, spanners, screwdrivers, pliers, tyre depth gauge, pressure gauge, allsorts) and put it on charge and it's pulling quite a bit from the charger. It was a new battery  6 months ago and it's suitably huge and the alternator is obviously working as it powered everything quite happily when started.

Is this going to be another fault that costs shit loads?

It's a Bentley. Of course.

Running the battery totally flat wont do it any good.

If I were you I would have a trickle charger on it in the garage, and if there is no leccy, I would get one of those ebay solar panel chargers and chuck it on the garage roof and extend the wires down inside and fit a couple of wee crocodile clips so it can be plugged into the battery.

I was whinging at Paul (Specialist Cars boss) about it and he says, with utter conviction that you MUST use the battery cut off switch if leaving it for any time. I don't really understand it, yes the alarm and the clock are running but nothing else surely? I can't see those two things drawing that much current?

Posted

I don't trust any of my old cars to not run their battery down or burst into flames if I'm leaving them for more than one day I take a battery terminal off.

I've had the X1/9 on a battery conditioner in the garage for the last ten years. It's one with a flying lead set so you just leave the leads attached permanently and plug in the leads to the charger end. It means the battery is always fully charged even after a couple of months inactivity. Not as easy if you've no power to the garage , but as above a solar one could help.

I used to work for ATS many moons ago and I'll give them their due, they never once asked or suggested we ripped anyone off. Things must have changed at some depots I guess.

That Bentley will have loads of ecu's that may not power down totally for loads of reasons . These can all sap power .

I would isolate the battery every time
