On the way to the Austin/Morris day at Brooklands my A35 started smoking heavily after it had been standing in traffic. When I got there (80 odd miles each way) I found it had used 1/2 a sump of oil :(I topped up before I left then on the way back it used the same amount of oil and also overheated at Dartford with the coolant forced out of the overflow pipe and the weak old rad cap. I eventually made it home, and have replaced the rad cap, but have not done enough prolonged high speed (50-60 mph) driving since to tell if it's made a difference. It's also produces a plume of smoke on startup which it never used to do Valve guides? It's the original engine so I'm hoping I won't have to replace it.

Fecking average speed cameras. A number of these aberrations have just (as in last night) been put up along the A149, which is the main road which runs past my town and is therefore my default route to pretty much everywhere. Now I fully acknowledge that the stretch they've put the cameras up along is a dodgy stretch of road, with awkward junctions, heavy agricultural traffic and frequent accidents. My issue is that speed cameras don't do anything to improve safety. All we'll see is an increase in the number of people driving straight into each other at 49mph whilst staring at their speedos rather than looking where they're going.Still, on a more positive note, I understand these cameras don't catch bikes (which ironically are involved in a large proportion of the accidents on that stretch of road, and from what I have seen a significant proportion of those are due to born again bikers riding like twats). Not that I'm likely to be doing much speeding on a CZ180...
