The grumpy thread

Sorry for your loss Jon.

I know what people mean about the site, it is a bit PSA mingebag motoring atm. I think there is also less attitude than used to be. When people ask for advice they are given it, and not just told to get a horsey horseless or whatever. I'm sure it'll cycle round back to "proper" shite sooner or later, and toys will be thrown from pram etc. etc.

Just a grump, nothing to see here, hoping things pick up with good weather

A house on our street has "a new caller" in a blue Pug 306 who thinks he's living the 90's with his bangin stereo rattling the windows.

One of the main problems with this site for quite a while has been the number of people bemoaning how rubbish it is "these days".

If people just ignored the threads they don't like and commented on the ones they do, then everyone would be happy - surely?

+2

I really don't understand whats going on of late? I come home and on here to find a thread about moving sites and others complaining of the content, I though we got passed this months ago? We seem to get this every year now.

There is a lot of stuff on here that interests me, but equally there is also a lot of stuff that doesnt. I reply to things that interest me, but sometimes I don't, but it doesnt mean I doesnt interest me. Other stuff that doesnt interest me doesnt get read, I don't complain about it. Most input here is interesting, I find tat collecting threads to spotted threads, ebay and such forth entertaining enough, sometimes even OT threads can be interesting.

If people are bored of this place, take a holiday from here for a bit, don't log on, don't peek in or lurk, do other more constructive stuff with your time, come back when you feel to do so.

I hope no one takes offence to what I have said, its not aimed at anyone in particular, just some general thoughts and observations.

Jon - My sincere condolences to you and your family, your uncle sounded like a right top bloke. May he rest in peace now.

We can all pick holes in threads or messages and sometimes we do. Nobody is perfect, sometime people believe they have a valid moan, sometimes they are probably wrong (including me) but I repeat nobody is perfect. Shit is shit, shite is shite, but you could argue some people only post to complain about something.

I think the 'cool thread/nice car' comments are a tricky one. Do you say nothing so the OP thinks no one is interested in their spottings or do you risk sounding patronising by making a polite comment? I'd prefer the latter but we're all different.

Posted

I don't see anything wrong or patronising with encouraging comments, when a thread is interesting, either. Not least, they keep the thread near the top for a little longer, rather than just disappearing in half an hour...

Posted

I think some of these moaners are having a mid life crisis! My advise is to find a lady 15 years younger, buy a merc coupe get it out of your system and then come back when you've taken your head out of your ar*e!

LS, I think you're about spot on. This place is a great place to be but there is a load of stuff that is not of particular interest to me so I read it, say meh and then move on to the next. It probably is of interest to someone on here so it doesn't offend me.

I don't post a lot either as my kind of interest in shite is somewhat 'specialized' and would bore the crap out of most. I may get frustrated and spout off about life in general in the grump thread every once in a while but that's just me being me and I expect to be ignored.

This place is just like a local, people come, people go. Some are miserable gits and are only interested in moaning about the world and some seem to merrily achieve wonderful things with nothing more than an old shoelace and a rusty old bean tin. The point is that it needs all of these to be what it is. Without the moaners, it would be just a sterile techie forum. Without the high shite achievers, it might as well just be the Daily Mail forum. Add the occasional loopy juice and pedant into the mix and you get this place. Unique, in a beige kind of way.

Anyway it's time I went back to lurking again until someone else starts talking about buses.

At this point there are just two things I want to add: Metrobi, agreed, and have you looked at Barrow Wheels lately? And Jon, condolences; as others have said, it sounds like your uncle was the kind of uncle all Shiters should have for at least some of their lives.

The Big C

THIS. This pisses me off like nothing else. It's CANCER. It's a fucking horrible disease that consigns people to a painful death, way before their time. I find it infuriating that people see fit to give it a nickname, regardless of the reason.

Posted

It's because people sometimes find it hard to even say it's name.

Posted

I understand that, Tim, but to give it a twee little title is to diminish the utter devastation it causes. Just makes it sound like a cartoon character, in my opinion.

Just for perspective, I speak from experience of losing someone very close, very early, to this bastard of a disease. I'm not just a moaning bastard.

Posted

I've got 3 work mates with cancer, two of them in my small team of 28 alone and all under 40, One mate has it pretty bad, kidney cancer but it's spread so will be on medication for the rest of his life and my other two mates have testicular cancer.

Awful stuff indeed.

if i had cancer or some member of my family did, i'd let them call it whatever the fuck they liked

My missus had a scare a few weeks back, well we both did, my arse hit the floor and we both wondered "if this was it".

The moral, if there is one, is to stop fucking moaning and enjoy your life. This place is the only refuge on the WWW where you are allowed to cream your pants over a dead Marina. I think, maybe, sometimes the more hardened posters on here forget just how refreshingly different this place is. Yep, some threads are utter wank and some are blindingly good, it makes the whole world go round.

From my perspective, as ive just been kicked up the arse with the boot of "life is too short" I am up at 4am to catch the 5.17am Train for three ours of purgatory ( if thats the right word) all to go and pick up an ebay purchase. My rucksack is full of tools I may need, my wallet is stuffed with cash and I dont give a fuck because it makes me happy.

Hopefully the car will make me doubly happy..

Its what life should be about.

Stupid blasted wiper blades, stupid blasted model/manufacturer specific fittings, stupid blasted wiper rubber that doesn't quite fit the old arm assembly, stupid blasted thing now wipes two lines across the screen where I pulled at it with pliers to make it fit.

Gonna go elsewhere and pony up for the proper blades now

I agree. It's an Internet forum, not real life, and it shouldn't matter too much. I'm sure the place wouldn't be the same if whatever members left, but ffs grow up all you moaners!

Waiting on the least enthusiastic other forum member to 'flash' my saabs ECU, before I put the engine in my Astra. The problem is, the engine needs to be in the Saab to have it done, and I took ten days off work for the sole reason of doing the engine swap. I've done NOTHING with only two days of my AL to go. Also same with person who said I can pick up F28 gearbox on way home from work last week, except they have yet to remove it from the car.

The hour change is pissing me off. The hour going forward always knocks me off kilter and I don't really feel right until it goes back again.

Apart from the physical effects it offends me because it means midday isn't in the middle of the day. It's a completely outdated concept too, workers no longer have the right to work in daylight or any kind of work/life balance. All the spring hour change does is make it more of a shock when we go back to the correct time in the winter- and then we get thicko politicians lobbying to stick with the wrong time all year round.

Posted

I disagree, it's fucking ace having lighter mornings and evenings as I find I can get loads more done to the fleet.

Posted

Agreed on the BST thing - loving the extra light in the mornings and evenings, they can leave it like this all year round for me.

Posted

Three hours twenty minutes and three changes all to cover a paltry 70 odd miles.

"Let the Train take the strain" as the advert used to say.

Do it again?

Not a fucking chance of that unless I really have to

Posted

BST doesn't give you lighter mornings and the lighter evenings are coming anyway. Maybe it's different where you all live, but we have electricity up here to help us get things done after dark.

Posted

I really don't get this BST/GMT bollox anyway. It's not as if they're tilting the earth by fifteen degrees on its axis and giving us an hour's extra daylight.

All it seems to mean up here is that what little sunshine we do get is over and done with by about half three in the afternoon, which is crap. It's still dark when the little kiddywinks go to school anyway (or whatever bollox reason they give nowadays) so I really can't see why they feel the need to fuck about with it every year. It costs me two hours anyway, by the time I've worked out how to change all the electric clocks on the phone, microwave, car etc...

My real grump is that it's my birthday today and against my better judgement I agreed to go out and do the 'family' thing tonight rather than go out for a few beers with friends I actually wanted to go out with, so I sacked my mates off till the weekend.

Half three I get a call giving some cock & bull story about my arsehole brother working late so it's all off (he just won't have wanted to come out, and rather than saying 'no' when he was asked he's just bolloxed it up for everyone else by inventing some lame excuse) so now I'll be sat in twiddling my thumbs instead of being out on the piss with my mates.

Families....

Posted

Well happy birthday anyway! :D Come on the 14th and we'll celebrate together (mine's on the Tuesday after...) I'll even get you a bacon butty, can't say fairer than that!

Buy a Canon EOS 300D after a mate of mine in London got royally fucked around with some twerp on eBay [fancy] because he wouldn't collect in person despite it saying it was the only method of 'postage' available. She really needed the money, so I bought it to save 'IM A DISABLED MAN IN SCOTLAND' getting her eBay account frozen despite the fact that he didn't read the listing properly.

I expected it to be utterly shit, but it really isn't bad at all. It runs my Nikon D60 depressingly close and I paid way more for the Nikon than I did for this 300D. I wasn't convinced by the Canon \ Nikon divide, but having borrowed a 7D at Uni and shot the Mouldworth film on a 600D, I may have been swayed to the dark side.

It shows its age in data transfer speed, though. The old CF cards are slow as fuck.

I wouldn't want it as my go-to DSLR, but instead of hoiking it back on the bay like I was going to do, I'm going to keep it as a back-up.

I've been with plusnet for the past 3yrs and I've no complaints.

The call centre is in Leeds, and when I've had an issue it's been fixed quickly.

If you do go for plusnet please put skattrd1 down as referrer as it gets me 50p off my monthly bill /pimp :D

Thanks, Chris, I have just gone with them and gave them your user name mate.

The battery I bought for my SD1 just over a year ago is stuffed after sitting in the car for the last 3 months without it moving. I had it on charge all last night and this morning it still didn't have enought to crank it over.

The local factors shafted me on it when I bougjtit as it has the terminals the other way around so was 70+ quid! I've just taxed it so I need to get the battery on it so I can get it in for it's MOT. This could get expensive.
