The grumpy thread

Hey Dirk, I can understand your frustration, since as you say, you fully intended to buy a Volvo. Thing is, this forum in the past had loads of threads along the lines of "what can £500 get me?", or people wanting to buy particular cars and suchlike. All sounds innocent enough but in actual fact, only a fraction of people that actually posed these questions either got offered anything suitable, or ended up buying anything at all.

All the while, the content-laden threads of people working on their shite, collection threads, spotted threads and how-to guides etc. go further down the page and easily get overlooked. Hours of effort go into creating these, so naturally people get a bit over it and either stop posting stuff, or sometimes even up sticks and leave.

Personally, I think the current way of moderating all the 'wanted things' into one thread is great, though I just assumed that the mods scan the pages and clean up things as they go along, rather than responding to requests off other forum members. I'm sure it can get a bit clunky for the people actually wanting advice but then think of promoting the idea other ways - a post in News 24, perhaps? Add a photo of your current car and show people what you'd like, as pictures always help, too.

To illustrate that things can be better with an accompanying photo, here's a pic of a bit of an 850 and a line dancer with a massive rabbit.

Dirk: any probs, send a message to a green person.  We're quite nice (usually) and we'll happily help solve an issue.  We do our best to keep the Beige Pages running smoother even than Trigger's Italarina van, but we don't always please everyone.

We all enjoy reading your adventures in the Wilbur Smith books, BTW...  ;)

Both been moved to the Open forum as not car focused threads. Not sure why they have gone back to that date.

Open Forum has now got the grumps and grins general. Main board has a car focused one to keep everything in line with cars / not cars forums.

I liked the comment - that's when you follow them home......... HA HA

But where do we post when we have a car related grump that doesn't warrant its own thread?

Er... yeah.... but years ago the powers-that-be decided to keep grumpy & grin on the main board for what I can only imagine were their own reasons.

TBH it's a bloody daft idea, splitting them into two separate threads each. What if the grump of grin in question is made up of several factors, some of which are car-related and others aren't?

Do you mods get a call out charge?

Call out charge is only in werthers originals .. semi sucked of course.

Post in whatever you feel is most relevant.

That we seem to have addressed the problem of too many new threads for the same thing with a load of new threads for the same thing

Is this a Government run operation?

No, it'd have already been outsourced

FFS. All the things have moved again and new post markers in threads have been lost.

What happened to the idea that this forum is moderated with a light touch?

These ginormous monolithic threads make it incredibly hard for newcommers to get on and want to be on the forum. They look at a thread with over 2000 pages and go sod that if I'm catching up with that thread. It also means that if you're the type of person who doesn't frequent the forum daily, it's almost impossible to be able to catch up on what things have had and are happening.

Both this and the Grin thread have reverted back to 2016....

More thread merging going on?

Be thankful you're not in Rotherham, it was 2008 here when I opened the thread.

Have to say I don't agree with these changes at all. This very issue was discussed at some length a while back, and the general consensus was to leave Grin/Grump where they were. Why change it again?!

Once of the most annoying things during Daveb47's tenure was that he was always fiddling with it. It's just not necessary. I have a lot of respect for mods, but I don't agree with this change.

It would have been nice to have been asked, then we could have all aired our thoughts about it & maybe gone with the consensus decision.

But in the spirit of things: my NON-CAR grump is the "Carillon" thread in the off-topic area, because on first glance it makes me think there's a new Colin.

This.

One of the things that made Autoshite different was that we didn't need moderation. Yeah occasionally a thread or person got out of hand and had to be dealt with but it was rare.

Now we've loads of green names and threads getting locked or redirected on a nearly daily basis. It's far too heavy handed and just not needed.

Posted

Ooh, does that mean we can we have  'Just Shameless Women' and 'Just Shameless Men' threads in the non car area too then?

(tongue in cheek).

Heavy handed there mods, the lightest touch is usually the most effective.

I'm a noob really - so didn't know about hte earlier discussion on this - so asked in the 'wrong' thread if this was an arbitrary move.......

For peace of mind and sleeping tonight - what was the reasoning behind the change. The original thread was one of the main reasons I joined - organised chaos of the most entertaining kind.

Surely more threads (wherever) means keeping an eye on more places too? Or is it just investigate/storm in when a report is made?

Good luck fellas.......... shall try and keep up

Bastard Windows 10 could do with spending less time installing shit that I never asked for - some Photo add-on that announced 'look at the photo album we just made you' - and more time trying not to do this:

How long is it now those donkey felchers at Microsoft been knocking out operating systems? And they still can't make one that fucking works properly, the useless twats.

Fucking Amen to that.  I haven't used a laptop or PC at home for about 6 years now since I first got an iPad

Say what you like about Apple products, you pick it up and its ready to go.  It never crashes, hangs, gives me the egg timer or takes bastid ages to do even the most menial task even though fuck all else is running...

Every time I have to break out the laptop, its always traumatic for the reasons listed above.

Get into the powershell and bin off everything.

Been there, done that! This latest annoyance must have come down with the last lot of updates.

Anyway, I got rid of the Photo app, and the add-on thing that subsequently appeared, because I found a way to use the old skool Photo Viewer instead - it's installed, but you have to fiddle with the registry to get it to work.

Although I'm not an Apple user, I know exactly where you're coming from. Every other computer I own bar one (used to run a Windows-only playout system) runs Linux...

Updates is a god shout, and one ill look out for, I downloaded a fresh ISO last week with the updates already installed.

Hoping when I get my Thinkpad T40 running properly to mess about with Linux properly for the first time

I refer the congregation to my message to Dirk earlier today.  We don't always get it right but we do try our best.  Some of you might consider that before you get your panties all twisted...
