The Leganza is a bit alright actually. In a slightly worrying development a nickname has stuck with thanks to @RoverFolkUs

I’m not one for naming cars, in fact I’d go so far as to say I’m against it, yet in this case the personification, especially with such a dopey character, is really befitting and endears you to it that little bit more. 

About 100 miles in and a mental to do list is forming. I’ve not decided whether I’ll get stuck in or just leave everything as is and focus any free time I have on one of my longer term cars. I guess we’ll see. 

What’s it like to drive I hear no-one ask? Well, the clutch is invisibly light, the thin rimmed steering wheel can be controlled lock to lock with just a pinkie, the throttle is laser sharp in the first 10mm (then no extra power can be requested) and the brakes are as feather light as the clutch, only with the bite in the middle of the pedal. It’s kinda like driving a racing simulator with some old pedals and wheel in the days before Force Feedback. I think it’s a Korean style, my Mother-in-laws Hyundai drives exactly the same. I’ve sussed the gearbox too; it accelerates surprisingly well and coupled with the twitchy throttle it seems to consist of 1st - 2nd - 2nd - 2nd - 5th. Once your above 60mph it doesn’t really want to provide any more poke.

Put some oil in the radiator during the test drive 😉 JK. It’s was a cold misty morning.

A long, unrelated and uninteresting story meant I had to cancel my trip to Germany for the weekend. This left me with some time (somehow way less than you’d think!) and it lined up with some energy and motivation. 

The Volvo and the Mini were stowed round the back so the Woo could grace the driveway and meet the hoover. It wasn’t gross, but I definitely feel like I was driving someone else’s car. 

It responded well to the hoover, it’s a much nicer carpet pile than in the Focus. It took half the time and is not like trying to suck grass seeds out of a Brillo pad like it is in the Ford. 

I stared at the peeling dash top and decided there’s nothing I want to to with that. It’s dry, no adhesive, but I think would require something very strong to hold it down, so I’m not not going to go there in case I make it worse. 

New Bosch wipers to address an MOT advisory. Now the drivers side is DOUBLE AERO. Maybe at speed they’ll crush the roof in. 

The engine light was dutifully checked with my Amazon OBD tool and duly  noted. P0341 and P0342 cam position shizz. I’ve cleared the codes, let’s see how soon they come back. I’ve yet to open the bonnet… Come to think of it, the light did say “check engine” and I haven’t checked if it has one yet. Oh well.

Then I started on some jams and slams. Being metallic silver it looks clean, but it turned out there was quite a bit in the crevices. 

Coming up brilliantly though. Normally I hate washing cars, especially silver cars.

So far the biggest issue I think is the sunroof. The steel cassette(?) inside the aperture is rusted and the seal is making a bid for freedom. I’m expecting it leaks (to be tested), although the carpets are alright and it doesn’t stink so there is some mild optimism about it. 

Mabye just some professional-fit duct tape will solve the problem. 😇

Maybe more to come. Maybe I’m done. Time will tell. 

Again, a TL : DR summary - half cleaned a car, deleted an error code, feel like Gods gift to restorers.

The Daewoo is Legonza. Some more various bits of faff occurred like taping closed the sunroof and acid cleaning the wheels. Top tier Shitting.

The Daewoo Leganza was a happy accident. I’ve enjoyed the almost 3 weeks and 400 miles of being Dae-wooed. Would I get another...? – I wouldn’t not get another, but I’m hardly actively searching for more Leganza action, and let’s face it, numbers are so scarce the likelihood is now slim.

I quite often take what the Universe provides, it’s only a handful of times I’ve looked for a specific make/model of car. I do enjoy the variety of the opportunity based landscape.

56 cars in, an average ownership of 14.47 months, but recently an increasing rate in turnaround (see calenderised ownership above 😂). I’m suffering from what I term “car creep”. No, I’m not a creep over cars, I think, even if a 90’s Astra 1.3 Merit would elicit a thigh rub, but I mean that over time, even with a high car turnover I’ve amassed a few vehicles that dwell in the background, sometimes literally going nowhere.

For example, I’ve sold four cars this year, but I’m still sitting with five! Three of those four I bought this year... I’m not sure if this is a bad thing or not, it’s just a thing – but I’d like to put more effort into some of my more long-term tat. Let’s see how that goes, LOL

The Granada’s been dormant for about a year. In anticipation of starting to do something with it I decided to start it up. 

There was oil was still in it, so I took the king lead off to spin it up on the starter to get some pressure and spread it about a bit. Then once all reconnected, I gave it a go.

It’s willing! It won’t idle properly yet, presumably a blocked idle jet. Brakes are first on the agenda though.

You put the key in the door, twist it, get in, put the key in the ignition, twist it, go about your journey, twist the key to turn it off, get out and twist the key to lock the door. Let's assume you do this twice a day going to and from work 5 days a week and out with the car once in the weekend. I've turned this key 4 x 2 x 6 x 52 x 28 = almost 70,000 times. And now it's turned its last.

Not may of my IRL peers have suffered the consequence; being locked outside your own car waiting for your wife to turn up with the spare key. Fewer still have had to wait even longer because your neighbour actually has your spare keys because you often use their driveway because you have too many cars, so they hold the spare key in case they need to move the car on your behalf.

I guess this is a result of living the Life of Shite.

A bit late, but I have 2 keys for my daily, one on each of 2 bunches I carry every day. Learnt the hard way.

Insider trading: invest in key cutting companies now! The Mini alone has four separate keys, so it’ll be eight on each bunch.

Have to admit that getting at least one spare set is pretty much the first thing that happens when most stuff arrives here.  It just causes me major stress otherwise.  They live in a very specific box upstairs and are clearly labelled in case I need to get someone to retrieve them for me.

Even though the van has seven keys for it in total which is a bit ridiculous... surely they could have used the same lock pinning for the lockers and loving area door rather than three different sets.

The Caddy currently only has one key, but that's largely because none of the places I've tried so far have the equipment to clone the immobiliser chip for an early 00s VW apparently.  Or it's a faff and they just didn't want to do it.

Yes, the idea of just taking the transponder out and zip tying it to the steering column did occur to me, but it's nice to have at least one vehicle with some vaguely meaningful security that works!

For the Caddy specifically I can do it but assuming its the same as similar age VAG cars I would need the van as the cloner has to "sniff" the codes to clone the chip.

For the other non-chipped keys mentioned I can also cut these, but with postage etc someone local might be cheaper.

It’s not a common metric admittedly, but the The Office for National Statistics could declare “2 inches of rain water inside a Mini” as an indicator of how wet November has been so far. Other less precise metrics include “even the Volvo has bloody leaked”

 

EDIT: Come to think of it “2 inches of rain water inside a Mini” is the same as saying “2 inches of rainfall”.

No doubt more welding will be required after winter!

Also requiring welding in 2023 is everything  the 440.  It looks good from afar, but beneath the sill trim a past repair/ miscreant screw has reaped havoc.

I would have had my Mini out in the snow but the clutch is buggered and I haven't had time to change it. They're great fun in the snow

Fair play. I'd love to get mine out on the snow, especially with it being rwd. Unfortunately I'd worry too much about rot and spoil the fun.

Well, the snow’s gone but I got some more nice A_WOV 2022 pictures for reminding me of the good times before someone no doubt has to tear into it for welding. 

 

To be honest I think the rain is worse. The wet gets everywhere (including 2” deep in the footwells, see above). At least with snow it seemed to stay dry.
