Let's see if Wuv finds any horrors, I'm not sure if the clutch/brake issues are 'TADTS' or if some fettling is needed...

IIRC the pedal boxes/brackets are bolted onto the bulkhead and as the bulkhead is made of tinfoil, it flexes and can get fatigue cracks around these areas. In time this leads to some interesting pedal 'feel'. Our bright blue Visa 17RD has had this area refurbished during our ownership, for that reason.

I can't remember if the Visa 10E is the same, but on the C15 17D, the LHD braking system components remained 'in situ' for RHD vehicles, with an additional connecting mechanism to enable a RHD pedal box to work the LHD set-up. Extra opportunity for 'slop' is therefore in-built on RHD vehicles so braking isn't as precise on them as the LHD cars. The brakes work just fine but feel completely different, along the lines of 'nothing's happening, nothing's happening, NOTHING'S HAPPENING, oh, we've stopped'... :-)

Thanks, I thought you'd know! Neither issue sounds like roffle-breakers, anyway.

If I hadn't bought the Sunny I could've been tempted with this. Anyhoo, it's been rescued and that's the important thing.

i don't think the others are daft enough to let the doctor anywhere near it without being searched for hidden spray cans ?

I reckon with a good soaking in TFR, bleach on all the crevices where it’s got moss growing, a good blast with a jet wash, bit of a mop over with a small amount of compound plus heat gun followed by oil on the plastics that would look gone.

Fixed that for you.

The two bulb bases (not the glass) say 'w 466' on them. That's the only three digit code I can see.

Hmm sadly that does not match any German Osram date code format,

w tells me the lamp was made in Herbrechtingen Germany which is correct I think as thats the factory that made glass halogen lamps

and the last 6 tells me June or december, but the middle number should be a Lower or uppercase letter for the year

for example if it was from December 1986 it would be wT6

(it could also be that German Osram Automotive lamps had their own date code format but I don't see that documented anywhere)

(as for why its marked not for use in Europe, thats because they dont look to have been E marked curiously, for some reason, especially when Wotan was mainly a brand used in england so I would of thought they would of been E marked, unless the UK was not considered part of europe! in this situation, or they were headlamps destined for somewhere like Australia!)

Been having a good old poke around the Visa this afternoon.

Will update later - now got to go and catch the bus into Norwich to retrieve the Elantra.  Here's a quick trailer to whet your appetites though:  "What's that funny smell and why is there steam coming from under the bonnet?"

Posted

I hope he's talking about the Elantra, otherwise my rent may be 100 quid short this month ???

I’ve just caught up on the whole thread and I can only say TOP work all.

If the visa needs fixing, I’m happy to lend advice/hands having just rebuilt the 1124cc for my own visa. And hey, if it needs to come out, ideal time to stick a new clutch in it as well

Should we be worried this was 5 hours ago? I hope wuvvum hasn’t run away to hide after the car tried to self destruct

Wuv typically does a Sunday night 'round-up' post.

I'm sure he'll back for that. Unless the Elantra has had a moment too!

Right then, this Visa.

Went out to it this morning and it started up first time.  Bit of blue smoke to start with but that cleared after a few seconds.

Here's the engine with its nice shiny new water pump.

DSC_0752.thumb.JPG.3a544412024616bd3805712209c1f0bb.JPG

Here it is after about 2 minutes' running - as you can see the exhaust is now a nice healthy colour,

DSC_0761.thumb.JPG.6dbc1c2257c09aaa3a9019e7fc412792.JPG

As you can see from the above pictures, it's nicely patina'd and has had a few giffer touch-ups over the years.  Also the paint on the bonnet has been polished through to the primer in a few places.  Tyres (145/70x13) all have reasonable tread but are pretty ancient and not exactly top-name brands.

Look at this though.  Carbon fibre* muthaflippaz!

Important things first:

DSC_0762.thumb.JPG.981f3cb761a0e7e1899b1068fd172fcd.JPG

Hmm.  A bit dim and one tail light is out, but it works well enough that one would get away with towing a trailer should one be brave enough to do so.  Also note the missing rear washer jet.

DSC_0767.thumb.JPG.76452dce15b306de6654bc5a87967c93.JPG

Let's take a look inside.  Front seats have had covers semi-permanently fitted - the upholstery underneath looks like it's seen better days.

DSC_0776.thumb.JPG.7f9acd0e7e6bd28bdde151d75f12af5a.JPG

Rear seat has a waterproof cover fitted - again the original upholstery has done an '80s Citroën in places.

I have a feeling it may have got a bit damp in here at some stage...

DSC_0769.thumb.JPG.1c495c0b9eb0cbc6856396e46352d4b2.JPG

There is a Ripspeed radio, which works.

DSC_0765.thumb.JPG.a1347f756fff405cc94197a3b1741ddb.JPG

However, the only speakers are two piddly little things in the back, so it doesn't exactly sound brilliant - in fact I doubt it'd be audible at all at motorway speeds.

Headlining is scruffy, and the interior light doesn't work.

DSC_0772.thumb.JPG.f7674120c0c2bfc707ec2e469d6ba69b.JPG

I think it's an issue with the switch, as there's power to the light and when you short the earth side of the bulb holder to the switch earth, the light comes on.

DSC_0778.thumb.JPG.5d4f7273a56821e82bb2a32d11ce46e9.JPG

A view of the nice basic dashboard:

DSC_0774.thumb.JPG.4b383283bcf7625fb8b4323450a6013c.JPG

As previously mentioned, the demister fan doesn't work.  I thought it might be the switch as that feels a bit floppy, so I took it out and tried bridging the wires going to it, but although it seems to be drawing current there's no blower action, so I think that might be seized.

The boot contains various goodies:

DSC_0766.thumb.JPG.3e1cfd57d0b0fcb9214dea3f1fb20bb0.JPG

In the carrier bag are a pair of stretch CV boots (an advisory on the current MOT) and various odds and sods such as an oil filter, bulbs, spare side repeater etc.

Boot floor looks sound,

DSC_0784.thumb.JPG.22a54e03921ce0694fbab95c8c7c1125.JPG

Look at this though - computerised rear wash wipe.  You wouldn't get that on a D-reg Metro...

DSC_0785.thumb.JPG.22384ea653c354c858fea3e07065600a.JPG

So what's the underneath like?  Well, for a 34-year-old Citroën it could be worse.

DSC_0786.thumb.JPG.c714dd592df3127fe3603154167f2393.JPG

These are the worst bits I could find - right at the front of the floorpans on the outer edge.  Both sides had gone in the same way.

DSC_0788.thumb.JPG.9eddd7a54a66a7175458db60e4b00564.JPG

DSC_0790.thumb.JPG.04cc891032e2cfdeb4f0de19aaa90acd.JPG

They've been repaired from inside the cabin with a patch on each side which appears to be holding up.

DSC_0793.thumb.JPG.ba7048a51a6131588dbfe6c73669a849.JPG

Outer sills have been repaired in the past and have quite a thick layer of underseal on them.  If I'm completely honest they did feel a little tender in a couple of places, but there aren't any holes.  I wasn't about to start poking with a screwdriver as it isn't my car...  There are various small areas of bubbling in other places, and the bottom of the driver's door might need attention in the relatively near future, but I didn't spot anything life threatening [IANAMOTtester, E&OE etc].

I did notice that the exhaust had developed a bit of a blow, so whilst the car was up on the ramps I started the engine to see if I could trace it.   It turned out to be coming from the centre box, the seams of which are rather rusty.  No problem, thinks I, I'll wire brush it down and sling some Gun Gum on there for now.  Dug the wire brush and Gun Gum out of the Toyota, then came back to the Visa.

Hang on a minute.  What's that funny smell and why is there steam coming from under the bonnet?

Oh.

DSC_0794.thumb.JPG.59e079e43e44e0f432ed1ce6881e89f4.JPG

I don't think there should be water there.  Let's see if we can find where it's coming from.

There's your problem - a split in the pissy little inch-long hose coming off the water pump.

DSC_0797.thumb.JPG.8916b19e0b90333d50fb6568cf7644e7.JPG

So I now need to find a small bit of 45º bent coolant hose of the right diameter.  I'm just glad it waited until I was home to start leaking, rather than doing it on the M27...

Overall it doesn't seem a bad little thing.  I think it was probably worth 400 quid (I wouldn't have paid 650 for it though).  I would imagine there will be a few more gremlins to sort out as it's been little used in recent years, and then only for pottering around, but it definitely has the potential to be a usable little classic runaround.

Nice work! Don't let it get you into spending your own money ?

Posted

There's still £30 in the kitty - some of that will have to go on a month's tax, but that should still leave enough to buy a bit of coolant hose.  I've also treated it to a new front wiper blade from my stash of ECP Black Friday bargains.

Oh, and the headlight bulbs are non-halogen so the bulbs @Six-cylinder has found would fit.

The question is do we roffle ASAP, or when you have sorted out a few niggles ?

The fan unit is under the dashboard on the driver's side. It is a two speed unit and the dash switch is 'off' when in its central position.

It should look something like this:
https://www.chevronics.co.uk/product/speedo-cable-ax-series-1/

You'll need to unscrew and remove the little under-dash tray arrangement first, then there are two or three little nuts holding the fan housing in place. The motor and fan unit sit within the housing. There is an electrical block connector to be disconnected and then a bit of wiggling of the fan housing needed to slide out the end of the plastic shroud from the air conduit. The whole lot can then be removed. The unit can be opened up to access the motor and fan assembly.

The fan units can be found on eBay for around £35 secondhand, if you can't persuade the fan motor to work.
