Does anyone else remember Hacket in Target driving a Renault 15 or possibly 17? The only clips I can find are of him binning an Escort with no brakes and some generic70's cop show Cortinas and Granadas, although the 2 5 Series they often used were a bit ahead of their time.d of their time.

Yep, growing up in the 80s I loved Kitt on Knight Rider. 'Turbo Boost'.

I've been watching old episodes of Columbo over the past few years (channel 5 USA) and it's interesting to see the cars featured. Of course there's the lieutenant's PooJoe convertible but then the villans drive some interesting motors, more often often European cars over the Yank landyachts.

Eg: the Citroen SM driven by Patrick McGooghan's character in the 1975 episode 'Identity Crisis':

Good one with columbo. There’s often unusual stuff floating around in the background but my faves are the Ferrari Daytona’s in the early 70s episodes- usually driven by murderers or the victim. Usually shorthand for money being a motive.

Just one more thing, mam; Columbo is also unusual because of the long production run (68 to sometime in the 90s IIRC) so the background chod and the changing tastes of ageing industrialists, scheming mistresses and bad tempered oil tycoons are there to see.

I can recall Bruce's Price is Shi... Right giving away some right dodgy motors back in the late 90s. My level of sad bastard anorak interest in this area descended to the point that I invested an entire evening once to watching old shows on YouTube to see what was given away.

Like most shows of the time the rump of the prizes were made up of the larger offerings of Korean brands:

Have we had the sweeney? 1995 and pre internet, when they re ran them (after being off the screen for years) I’d never seen them before (aged 15 so missed them first time round) and was flown away by the ropey jags and background chod....

The Sweeney was cool. I like playing the guess which car will be trashed game -usually some ropey older motor. Just looking at the motors parked on the street in London at the time is fun, there's some absolute gems.

There was often filming going on in the area, partly due to the proximity of Ealing Studios (by then BBC owned but also rented out to others).

It added an extra dimension to the Sweeney, Professionals etc when the car chases sometimes went past our house. Happy days.

I was always partial as a young impressionable lad to Hadleighs Monterverdi Speed 375L. Which in reality was the UK importers first Rhd demo car. 

It still just about exists but needs a lot of work......

Mentioning Columbo there was a Sunbeam Arrow in one episode, for anybody who doesnt know this was a Hillman Hunter, never did well in the states, shipped over in kit form, they also did the same for the Avenger  Plymouth  Cricket

In the early 70's Range Rovers often appeared in programmes if the hero had to go into the countryside , John Steed had one to match his Broadspeed XJ-C.

But the most important use of a Rangie was to crash through a gate...

Of course some people got it wrong, Gambit not crashing through a fence , presumably as brand new car at the time of filming BL specified only Steed's car could be used for stunts.

Actually a Plymouth Cricket also featured in Columbo, more prominently - it belonged to a secretary who tried to blackmail the murderer (which didn’t end well for anyone, obvs, including the poor Cricket I believe).

Good shout for Calllan' s Range Rover. That sequence was on YouTube it's well worth a watch.

It was very early example, the reg number being very close to early cars used for advertising. 

There were various differences between the Mk1 and Mk2 Stag, one of which was the lack of chrome sill covers as can be seen here.

Mk1s all had body coloured rear panel, whereas some Mk2s had a black rear light panel.

 

Also, there's some other shite about the Mk1 having wheeltrims, not alloys.  And the Mk1s didn't have a body side stripe.  Something like that anyway.

Legend has it that Nicholas Pissing Parsons of Sale Of The Century fame started Lada jokes as the show offered one when they first went on sale and in showing that it had four doors, he went to open one and it fell off. Sadly I don’t think the show exists anymore but he talked about it in an interview once.
