Gearbox in sump

Was pondering the A series BMC unit today, specifically the Mini version with gearbox in sump and wondered of any other manufacturers used that set up? 

I think I'm right in saying that some Leyland 'O' series engines used it, can't think of anything else.

Didn't the PSA "suitcase" engines have a similar setup?

Can confirm, O series uses gearbox in sump.

The 'suitcase' engines are similar in that the gearbox is below the engine and shares the same oil. 

The BL 'E' series and transverse 'B' series engines also had the gearbox in the sump.

How odd. As was waking up there I was thinking about A series engines and trying to list in my head everything they came in.

Saab used a setup where the gearbox was directly below the engine, however they didn't share an oil supply.

Sure that more than one mechanic has drained the oil from the wrong one over the years.  Inspire of the big stamped wording next to the sump plug saying "engine oil drain" with an arrow pointing at it.

Almost every four stroke motorbike engine of the modern era.

Bikes originally had a separate engine and gearbox, two strokes, Moto Guzzi's and  flat twin BMW's still do. The Japanese popularised 'gearboxes in sumps' but I'm pretty certain they wouldn't have been the first to use this system in bikes.

Some of Simcas early FWD efforts were gear in sump.  Oh and didn't the Miura have a gear in sump setup as well. I remember Jay Leno whinging about it.

My old escort Rs Turbo had gearbox in sump when I changed to first instead of fifth at 100mph on the m62, as well as some other engine parts.

Triumph 1300 fwd 'sump' captured in the wilds of my back garden.

Doesn't share oil as the box and diff are elaborately separated by needlessly thick wall iron so ideal wrecking ball replacement!

Peugeot 204,304 and original 305 also had gearbox in sump.

I always thought it was most impressive that they got an auto gearbox to work on engine oil (usually shit black and full of carbon) and I didn't think that 'box was too bad either.

Not shite on first acquaintance but woefully undeveloped at launch, and yes gearbox in sump.

Yes. N360 and N600.  They also looked similar to a mini and managed to rust even more quickly.

The Datsun 100A was a transverse FWD job, can't find out whether it was box in sump though.

Datsun 100A was not gear in sump but like the Saab, was below the engine.
