Citroen CX is an interesting vehicle to have L-plates on. NSU looks tiny in comparison.

If I had a time machine I would love to go back and save the Granada. Ultimate spec for me estate and DVLA check comes back showing it had a 3.0 litre V6.

Cantrell Rd, Bow Common, 1988

Great photos, I know there are few others on here that follow banger racing, I'm guessing this might be the yard that Bow May 'M' operated from, theirs was definitely in Cantrell Road and I can see a couple of bangers in the yard as well as the Mk1 outside

An actual scrapyard in central London! That will be a artisan fucking bread shop now I expect.

The Cantrell Road one is not a bit of grass, the road has gates at either end and is not used for motor vehicles anymore.

The one on Old Ford Road is now a Cul-De-Sac of houses.

I remember the Practical Classics supplement when it was new. The chap owned a semi-derelict stately home. You can see it in the background of the first photo. The scrap yard was his means of raising cash to restore the place. However, it had a feeling of hope over reality. There were a couple of articles on the place a few years later with everything looking even more forlorn. Real beauty in decay.

There was a girl at college (West Kent in Tonbridge) whose Dad owned a scrappy in New Cross. I even remember going there in the early 90s. There was nothing unusual about it then  the whole area was generally run down.

Unsurprisingly the site is flats now despite a very awkwardly shaped plot with a steep railway embankment to one boundary.

Someone else's Dad had just started buying relatively large Victorian semis in Lewisham because they were £70k a piece and that was the level he was at. He didn't mention it to people down his local because they'd have taken the piss out of him.

1996 was the last year London was affordable for the average person.

All a bit hard to comprehend these days.

And so to its natural conclusion.

Blackborough House - Daily Mirror 2016

Lots more articles and images if you pop it in Google. I'm off for a small cry over lost times.

Hang on, yours for the price of a very average zone 1 flat in London...

Savills

Just not the same though.

There was a supplement or article in Popular Classics around 1990 which was dedicated solely to this place. It was a fantastic read.

If there was a gasworks to go with the gasometers then it will be contaminated to fuck, which would explain why there isn't a gated estate built on it.

Like that would stop developers

Call it something like “Bluebird Meadows”  so that anyone not from there is totally unaware of the gas works.

Remember actually using that yard in what must have been 1990/91. I was at uni in Exeter (bad decision - too small, boring and rains all the fuckin time) and needed stuff for my Saab 96. It took some finding in those pre-satnav days. You basically headed for Cullompton then drove around the lanes for a bit until it appeared.

Yard and house were exactly as the pics show. They had pretty much everything if you were into old crap, with no moderns at all. Very much a rummage through the brambles and undergrowth and see what you can find job. Then hunt for the guy who ran the place somewhere in that massive Scooby Doo house.

Happy days.

The scrap yard was on the other side of the rail tracks to the gasometers. The scrap yard site is now part of Tower Hamlet Cemetery Park.

Here's the gates that stop vehicles from going down Cantrell Road. Doesn't look like the Twoer Hamlets Council is bothered by any contamination.

Wonder if the Astra was moody, would’ve been fairly newish then I presume?

*EDIT: on second thoughts, it looks like the back end’s had a smack so maybe it was just legitimately wrapped round a lamp post!

I know it's an environmental disaster but I bloody loved scrapyards like that, sometimes I'd just go to wander around and see what was there, you'd find all sorts of stuff in the cars or just discarded on the ground

Yeah me too they were great places.

Tbh most were long established so the soil was well contaminated. I don't think environmental concerns did for most of them it was selling land at a good profit for housing & new Health & safety regs. That's what killed all the fun.

Sad as it was proper recycling and more fun than buying bits off ebay.
