Dangel 504 4x4 Pickup parts required.

A friend has this great old truck, has done for some years but hasn't been on the road for a few now, I recently found out why. It seems the front wheel bearing on the nearside disintegrated some time back and he hasn't been able to find a replacement. He's not really into the interwebz so I did had a bit of a mooch on ebay and got his Mrs to order a bearing advertised as such. Sadly the one supplied was the wrong one.

I've since found out that the removed hub may now be lost too. Do any of our friends from abroad or indeed anyone from here have any knowledge on this rather rare motor. It'd be great to see it getting a bit of use again.

The IRB wheel bearings catalogue lists the Dangel 4x4 as being fitted with two types of front wheel bearings in common with RWD 504s so I'd assume the hubs are the same too.

505 Dangel setup but I think the 504 should be similar in principle.

Dangel loved to change parts frequently, 505 is not the same.

 

Check here for bearing sizes used, they differ by vin. Pages 38Z xx.

If you can't find somebody selling the bearing by size. let me know the part number and i will ask around the 504 scene for it. I can also search for the missing hub, need the correct part number.

I never knew they did a 4x4 504 Pick-up and i worked for Peugeot/Talbot in the late eighties.

 

I even borrowed the parts dept orange H plate one to move into my first flat.

They do show up here sometimes as they're popular among the export lot..... I can ask a couple of the local guys in the know - see if they turn anything up.

You need an entire upright? just the hub?

Won't be a fast response though - it never is.

I think Dangel is a seperate concern. They did all sorts of unlikely conversions - a lot were for French utility companies on vans. Up until 20 years ago imported 4x4's were a rarer sight in France.

Thanks for the responses. I'll pop down there at the weekend and find out a bit more. I'll take some photos of the other hub and see if I can find any distinguishing marks too. It was looking a bit sorry for itself last time I saw it and that was a while ago but I do know it had a load of welding done some time back by a chap that knows what he's doing, hopefully it's not too far gone.

The hub isn't going to be the same as the one for a standard pickup.There would be no need for a hole for a driveshaft in the hub body or any need for splines on the drive flange on a standard hub.

Try coastal motorhomes as the J5 C25 Citroen Peugeot vans came in 4x4 flavour and I suspect the bits would be the same.

If you can get the bearing number you are home and dry. Failing that you'll need to do a bit of measuring. Take a vernier with you.

 

You will be able to get a bearing for it. That much is fact.

Getting what is left of the bearing out may prove interesting but at least he's found the bit it's mounted in!

Looking a bit sorry for itself at the mo but that's the reg no if it helps anyone, will upload more photos when I've got access to my laptop.

I might try running a big bead of weld around the inside of it first and then a fly press. I've had success with that in the past.

Get on the Peugeot club website and email the parts man and chairman, Ian kirkwood. He’s a legend and seems to like a challenge!

Best way to get an outer shell of a bearing out of a housing is to run a couple of beads of weld around the inside of it . Wait TIL it cools down and it will practically fall out .

One of my fave tricks that one

Maybe it's the same as a 504/604 rear bearing? Some of them have trailing arm rear suspension with a CV joint and stub axle like those on the front end of a front wheel drive or 4x4.

 

I'm not saying it is the same but it is at least possible.

Any idea welcome right or wrong I don't give a fuck. The old girl will start up no problem with a battery on it apparently and I'd rather see it running than rot into the earth.

I did some work for SKF a few years ago and you wouldn’t believe how much old stock they had dotted about in warehouses, and how geeky they get about obscure bearings/applications (in a good way). Might be worth dropping them a line and asking if they can help - you may find they love this sort of challenge.

Mine too, and worth keeping the welded race as a drift to knock the new one in, now it has shrunk enough not to get jammed in the housing.

Ahh yes - some I’m not the only one with a box of old bearing shells under my press then ?

I always wrap a rag around old bearings if I use them on the press . I know it’s not good practice and they do have a habit of exploding but in the real world the rag stops bits flying about

Probably still worth the best part of a grand to the exporters as it sits

That wouldn't surprise me if seen that they sell for many Euros abroad sometimes if you can find one for sale. Would this one being RHD go against it in this case? I can't imagine they sold many of these over here but sadly it isn't listed on the how many left site, being a pickup I suppose? I've never even seen a photo of another RHD one tbh and I've had a fair look.

Get measurements from the inner race & outer race.

Width / I.D / O.D / Type of bearing (Ball, needle etc)

And throw us the info, I'll hopefully be able to identify it.. possibly supply one

I think that you should talk to the 504 registrar of Club Peugeot UK about it.

There is a bearings specialist on the trading estate near Tunbridge Wells. I expect every trading estate has got one :)
