Fuck me, I paid £35 for mine and it had a month's tax and MoT and passed the next one without any problems. Only died when I jet washed the engine bay looking for an oil leak..........

My late Mum got a new Astra hatch in ‘88, 5 door, moss green metallic, I think. Four speed 1.3 but was a lively thing with a similar shit AM/MW radio (Atlantic 252 was the favoured channel I think). I happily drove it from Glasgow to Reading and back and Glasgow to Donegal. Was much faster than my 1.6 Cortina.
