On the other side of the spectrum, a posterchild for the brilliant designs of BMW during the late 90s:

Facelifted, manual, black, low-mileage Z3 with the right engine for incredibly little money. I would if I could.

Handily, it looks like that matra rancho has wipe down seats. I'd love to get behind the wheel...

Not expensive for one of these. They are much larger than they look - everything is to a large scale - over 14ft long and 6ft 5inches wide. They are totally wooden to drive and totally gutless but totally wonderful. A US idea of a small car.

I never had any issues with the Northstar in my STS.  I think they're one of those engines that are fine as long as they haven't been run on a shoestring.

Speaking of STS's, here's one now.  No test but cheap.

What's the parts availability like nowadays?

Northstar issues were sorted by the time the 2006ish STS came around. The interior still looks a bit cheap for what is supposed to be Cadillac's flagship though. However its still pretty much a unique chance to buy a new one of these. I'd go for a much nicer low mileage 2nd gen CTS with the 3.6 for the fraction of the price but those have their own serious engine related problems...

NorthStar is a bit like a K-series? with head-bolt issues

£595, 1.6 and 69K.  Probably years of inexpensive trouble-free motoring on offer here, it would make a good companion for the tripe that haunts the Low Cost Big Liability thread.
