I think these Mk3 Mondeo 1.8's are the the best buys as an every day car about 1000 quid if you can keep the rust at bay.

They rides well, handle well, parts are cheap and the 1.8 engine is absolutely fine.

Thats a tidy looking thing, practical as well,  are the 1800s slow as a slug?

I didn't realise Peugeot UK donated a 106 Electric to the producers of The Bill.

I actually like that though and in my fantasy no work/infinite barn life I would refit some modern-ish batteries and buzz about in it

Haven't seen that for a while. Somebody trying to claim something on a Felicia is from a Volkswagen when it plainly isn't. The engine is Skoda through and through. Volkswagen couldn't build aluminium engines at this point. This really really annoys me. I know nobody else cares if it's right or not but I do.

Is that right? In late 90's VW didnt build alloy engines? Seems unlikely considering how long the supposedly inferior french and even UK manufacturers had been building alloy engines for by then.

Im not saying you are wrong, its just really surprising information that seems slightly incongruous

I don't actually know to be honest, I'm just getting irrationality annoyed. But certainly the VW engines that Skoda were forced to use weren't. The 1.6 that the Felly used was an iron block with only 75hp. The Škoda all alloy 1.3 was 68hp and much lighter. Škoda had their own 1.6 OHC ready to go. 101hp and all alloy so lighter, but they weren't allowed to used it. I'm still bitter. I should let it go, it was a long time ago but I'm still bitter. The Felicia could have been so much better with it.

Another hatchback built by communists with a sophisticated* 1.3-litre engine.

This one is in Wales, famous for its dry* climate. Probably one for the 'just fuckin' scrap it mate' thread, judging by the doors, tailgate and arches.

£450 or  £0.50 per kilogramme of rust.

I've owned both 1.8 and 2.0 Mk3 Mondeos and I found the 1.8 noticeably slower, not slug-like but a surprisingly big difference from the 2.0 considering that they look pretty close on paper.  Found the 1.8 whiny at motorway speeds, too.

I do recommend a Mk3 in general, if there are any left that aren't thoroughly worn out!

Of course, no 1.6 was ever offered in the MK3, I guess with it's extra size and the way the market had moved on, wasn't considered 'tolerable'.
