Great to see this being saved for the second time and the enthusiasm for slowly bringing it out of rigor mortis. GR8 work all involved!!

Incidentally the posts from @BlankFrank don’t show up in the notification emails I get when the topic has been replied to, but everybody else’s do. Related to the same thing causing the private message non functionality issue perhaps?

If you've got it sorted cool but when the time comes and all..... he's in wiltshire but that's a minor really.

I wouldn't mind being pointed in their direction... getting some of my bodgery sorted properly is on my to do list at some point.

steel door on the Mk12, at least up to the Mk12c

you can see one going rusty here!

I have some info that says the door became fibreglass with the Mk12D however I have not verified this yet, should do tho! kinda forgot about it!

I was going to say the steel door is why so many Mk12's are missing doors, (they rust off/away) however iv seen sadly a lot of Mk12E's with missing doors and if they are really fibreglass then thats not the case! (see the previous photos of the 9 Mk12's on the recovery vehicles)

if the Mk12D and Mk12E doors are fibreglass the reason for the missing doors then would have to be a weakness in the door mounting mechanism rather then the door im guessing!

 

as a side note, not seen that picture before :) trying to work out what its registration is almost looks like the first 3 letters end in an X which is NOT part of any Essex marking

which is very peculiar!

was wondering to my self its not UZX555 is it?

then I noticed the Thames trader upfront does have a ROI registration!

sadly I cant find anything for UZX555

but definitely looks like ZX to me which is a ROI registration marker!

wonder if its one of the 6...

thats a very interesting spot!

Every single nut+bolt holding the invacar body to chassis is rusted beyond the point of no return so i had to break out the angry spanner.

You know the car you're working on is old when stuff is visibly brazed together.

The bulb dangling under the front of the car in the older pictures is the nearside headlight bulb, here are a couple of close-ups upon LBF's request.

No visible markings that i could see.

This seems to be the worst part of the body damage simply because it covers the whole rear quarter.

Bigger than the ones on the Model 70.

Possibly. I'll have to double check what lighting stuff is needed for full re-assembly in future sometime, it might come in handy. ?

its actually the first time I have seen a Mk12 with its roof removed, iv seen quite a few topless Model 70's but never a topless Mk12 :) 

thanks for the bulb pics, shame there are no visible markings... however if you take the bulb and pop in your fridge or freezer till its nice and cold, then breath on the top of the bulb your breath condensating on the bulb may bring out the etch once more :) 

I do wonder if its original to XWC... (if you dont want/need it then please keep it for me dont throw it out! and ill happily take it off your hands some time)

 

its very interesting to see that last photo, never knew/realised XWC survived a fire of some kind! its the almost exact same style of damage that one side of Dolly, @Mrs6C's Model 70 sustained during its time with its previous owner when a shed burnt down next to it

And there's a couple of patches on the roof where the gelcoat has burnt away completely to expose raw fibreglass

There's about 3 foot of brake line that has dissolved into nothing too.

Edit: LightBulbFun; i'll do the glass etch thing sometime. If i don't re-use the bulb then i'll make sure you get first dibs and it's not going into the bin.

That whole crossmember will be replaced, the pic is to illustrate the severity of the current rust situation. :P (it happened while dragging it through my garage, wasn't intentional but i couldnt resist getting a pic of it like that)

Got the rear-end bodywork off, then the side door-like panel.
Separated the engine wiring from the body wiring and disconnected the drive shaft.
Disconnected the clutch, gear shift connection, accelerator and choke cables then removed the engine.

With the entire engine/drivetrain removed, that last wheel is still seized so it'll be the brakes or bearings on that side that's locked-up i'd say.
Next job will be to clear all the misc crap out of the engine fan housing and see if it spins freely. The clutch arm on the old engine doesn't spring back but the cleaner looking spare (thanks again btw Egg :) ) seems to have a functional clutch and the engine spins freely on the spare too so i'll be relying on that to get the invacar running.

Oof, that is somewhat crispy in places isn't it.  Hopefully the repairs aren't too hideous.  I guess at least there isn't a huge amount to the metalwork to begin with. 

I guess considering the age and storage conditions she hasn't done all that badly really to be honest despite the appearance.

That is an evocative pic, can imagine the Invacar owner downing 6 pints of the dark stuff during the afternoon and then making his way home at 12 mph. In the dark. With no rear lights.

there is a story somewhere of someone getting pull over by the police for drink driving in their invacar, only for the the police men ending up having to call in a senior police officer

because none of the police men could figure out how to operate the invacar and its abnormal controls to recover it to the police station!

InvaUpdate:

Lower fan cover removed, nothing visibly jamming it. The fan only has the slightest amount rotation but i'm not giving it any more than a finger-tight strength twisting for safety. Cleared it out and still not turning over. (surprise surprise)

On the other end of spinny bits however, the driveshaft and what i'll call the large "final drive sprocket" are able to rotate about 30 degrees, a little more with some effort until i can get the chain-drive assembly (with driveshaft still attached) to rotate about 90 degrees in total. I found the chains removable link and popped it off, the chain was rusted to the final drive sprocket so tightly that i had to hammer it off with a rubber mallet.

Once the chain was totally off i could rotate the driveshaft and final drive sprocket in its bearing fully, no grinding or binding up. Still aligned to the engines smaller output sprocket through its full rotation. :)

With the chain off that allowed me to separate the engine from the engine mounting cradle thing:
