Normally I would say 2. But since it's Corsa, option 1

How can I remove primer which has been sprayed over factory paint without damaging said paint underneath it please? Wary of using sandpaper or wire wool etc in case it knackers the paint. Tempted to try choke and carb cleaner as that usually works ok but I think there's a chance it might dull the paintwork.

Cheers in advance.

I always think that a VW show, or any other one-make show of the sort of unprecedented scale that VW gatherings enjoy, must be really bloody boring

I can see where you are coming from on this but I'd have to say that actually they're not. We trade at a load of VW shows and the majority - Camperjam, VW Expo, All Types etc are pretty good shows with a surprising amount of variety and some really nice cars.

There are a few shows - and usually those which are more aimed at modified cars tbh - which are a bit dull and some of the cars follow a very simple formula for making them look unique*

Most of the VW shows are aimed at the enthusiasts who actually look after their cars rather than those who just want to make them look intentionally shit.

Does anything bad happen when you overfill an engine by about .7 litres of oil?

Posted

^ It depends on the engine - A napier Deltic (for example) wouldn't notice that sort of overfill, but a Honda C90 would be unlikely to run properly.....

Posted

Too much oil and some could get blown out via the crankcase breather, on a really old car it would both provide some underbody rust protection and piss on the road to mess up someones white moccasins, on a not so old one, eat it back up, make lots of smoke and dirty up the plugs, on fancy newfangled la de da stuff, it could bugger up the cat, maybe the lambda, kill kittens as well. Could be a bit of a hazard on a diesel, making it over-rev and do a grenade number, feed bits of flywheel to whoever's in your passenger seat.

Or produce a James Bond esque smoke screen. As evidence by my Bluebird, which when I bought it was overfilled by about 2.5 litres

I use this stuff http://www.farecla.com/#/120 on a damp cloth but you can get it in liquid form

Lovely job, I've got some of that kicking about somewhere, many thanks.

How hard is it to take tyres off rims?

I want to get a set of wheels blasted and resprayed but the only place in Tonbridge that can do DS wheels has the most unhelpful manager ever. I think I have a tyre iron somewhere. What else will I need? Large bar and a club hammer?

It really is about time I sorted out the rust on my door

since the part that needs filling will undoubtedly be larger, would filler or fibreglass be a better option?

I use a scissor jack under my van to break the bead, with a brick on the other side to stop it trying to flip up, a car might be heavy enough or I've heard of people using doorways. I used to break the bead by driving over the sidewall but that doesn't seem to work any more.

Once you've broken the bead it's pretty easy to lever the tyre off.

Can you not hammer a slightly larger door on it?

Seriously though You'll need to fiberglass it first to bridge over the hole before finishing off with filler, Just don't expect it to last forever before rusting out again though, You'd need to weld new metal in for that.

Excellent article by Mr B of this parish and some of the follow up suggestions are useful. I should be able to adapt my log splitter for breaking the bead.

DS tyres have tubes always, at what stage should I remove the tube? I think I will get the tyres refitted professionally so that if they bugger up my resprayed rims it'll be their fault not mine.

Break the beads, pop the valve out from the whole in the wheel (just push it back into the tyre) then yank the tube out. Refitting is the reverse of removal  but leave the valve core out untill it's all mounted and sweet and it'll be much easier if you have a valve puller to hold the valve so it doesn't keep poping back into the tyre.

Thanks, I shall shortly be using my "skills" to make it look better. Odd how 2 of the doors are scabby, yet there's barely a spot of rust on the rest of the car. Not that I'm complaining.

If putting in new metal isn't a option for you, then fiberglass/fibrofil will be your best friend - sand the rot out as best possible, trowel the stuff into place, then stick some cardboard over the outside to hold it in place, and help it form the correct profile until it sets - filler and perfect from there. Then lots of waxoil or plain old oil inside the door to help slow down the tinworms

Or just swap the door, but that does rather rely on being able to find a better one for sale/in a breaker's. Best of luck.

Sold some floor tiles on Ebay (molested on them but that's the 99p seller's gamble  )

Said peasants have obviously come to their senses realising that 19 boxes at 23kg each is a tad heavy (437kg) and have asked for a price for delivery.

How much per mile would be reasonable given my LWB Transit does mpg I daren't calculate.

It's only 24 miles so no great distance and I'd be happy to see the back of them this week.

Posted

I'd tell them I charge a quid per mile, times 48 (because you'll need to return)...And a token 2 quid for loading it, that'll be a red note please.

I'd humbly suggest putting a little air into the tube before refitting the last (top) bead to stop the tube from getting 'pinched'. Also in the absence of a valve puller careful and patient use of mole grips will suffice.

If one was to fit a hair dryer/leaf blower fan type arrangement to the inlet, or even the air filter, would it improve performance? Sort of DIY turbo-ish.

In a word, no. Long story short, these electric blower devices you find on eBay cannot put enough pressure thro' to actually make a real difference. You'd be as well getting the cat to fart up the air intake - the extra methane might well have more effect.

Every tightarse tyre changer should have one of these :D

The problem is my wheels have only got a tiny hole in the middle and won't fit over a standard remover.

square hole denotes 5.5J rim, the earlier 5" rims have a round hole...

I'm just trying to visualise the meeting the Citroen engineers had where they decided to put square holes on a rim. :|
