Trigger have a look at the parkers customers reviews so you can see what the owners think of them rather than journalists reviews. I always find it pretty revealling.

I think there may be a start stop model in the range that drops under the 100 g/km C02 level so gets free road tax. It might be worth trying to find one of them

Trigger if that's Richlee between wickford and Rayleigh, all I'd say is keep looking...

Oh :|

Honestly, I used to enjoy buying new cars, hunting the car down, the test drive, bartering with the dealer etc but it's just a major ballache these days, everycar I like seems to get slated on the internet with horror stories and they all seem to be up to the same standard these day.

I'm trying to find something with similar equipment levels as my Mondeo but with less miles, good reliability record, looks sporty and economical but I'm struggling, I suspect I'll get a Honda Civic 2.2 CDTi as they tick all the right boxes and are about as interesting as a modern car gets, I'm not sure about the costs if thing go wrong on them? Also they all seem to be in shit colours like Silver.

I took this out at the weekend.

a 2009 Kia Cee'd 2.0 CRDi Sport, I must say It drove really well, the interior is very well made, it was quiet and all the sums added up and it still has 3.5 years warranty left, The trouble is that it's a naff colour, looks really dull and i imagine once the warranty runs out the value car the car will drop out it's arse.

The ideal car would be the Focus i guess, either 1.8 or 2.0 TDCi but they are a bit dull inside and still seem overpriced for what they are. It's defiantly easier to buy shite cars!

Couldn't agree more about not buying any car because of Internet reviews as most will have had a slating of some kind. I know nothing at all if the current Astra except I think I read somewhere that some models don't have a temp gauge, which (if true) is stupid IMHO.

If the new ones are as reliable as the previous models then I don't see anything to worry about.

Save yourself the emotional distress and just lease something. You just pay a monthly rental so no need to worry about depreciation, mots, things exploding outside of warranty.

At the end of 3 years give it back and rent something else.

Trig,

Internet car (and everything else) reviews will bring always bring some shitty write ups. Many reviews are written by fools. Thats the joy of the interweb. Fools can write stuff and it is just out there and gets read as if the author is some kind of authority on the subject. Far better have a quick read and make your own judgement.

We have quite of few of those Astras on fleet in 1.7CDti form and have had no bother.............apart from one and the driver of it is based in the office next to me so I hear about every little niggle. In detail. again and again. Before the current lot we had the old model and they were OK too.

Thanks Alf, I might go and take a look at it Thursday if it's still there, It's has a electronic handbrake though which is off putting, Until then I'll keep looking and see what comes up.

Anybody got any fact based recommendions for Astra sized cars with diesel engines for up to £9000 (less would be better), I keep looking at VW Jettas but they are also pretty slim on the ground in my area too.

That was my budget - I looked at Jettas but without exception every one I saw had above-average mileage, battle scars to the trim and just felt tired. I'd hazard a guess they were all ex-lease and driven by people who didn't care.

I tried a Bini and found it very lacking in equipment, and very old. A Kia Cee'd which was nice, newer than anything else for the price, but I was put off by resale and the badge. I tried a Panda 100hp which was excellent fun, thousands of pounds cheaper, but seemed tiring to drive. I ended up with the ubiquitous Focus purely through lack of anything inspiring in the "great MPG, half decent resale" bucket.

I did find a Civic 2.2 diesel in a fetching shade of poo brown, and in fact I nearly went for it - back to the garage for one last look around and bung a deposit on it and it had been sold :( Nice drive, quicker than the Focus (although so are glaciers), very funky inside. The only downside was bizarre blue velour seat facings (in a brown car) and the mileage was a little high.

You can buy a new diesel Sandero for around that money.

Its petrol and seems to lack low down torque,

I believe Volksy had one of these as a hire car and took it back as he thought it was dangerously underpowered.

I did and it was, The 1.6 was woefully underpowered, causing a few heart stopping moments at junctions and slip roads. Probably as they weigh the same as a small moon.

My mates just bought a brand new Sandero Freeway 1.5DCi for £9000, it's a 4 month waiting list though, the photos and spec sounds good for the money but it's I suspect it's another that will suffer from high deprecation.

What you've just said Pillock is exactly what's been playing in my head, everything seems high mileage and ex lease auction fodder, It's amazing how hard it is to find and buy a decent family diesel these days, this Civic 2.2 CDTi Type S is the one car that's been winking at me for the last few weeks, maybe I should just go and take a look at it and get it out of my system, I drove a SE spec one a few months back and it was really nice so this should be the same.

Those Civics are really nice. Much nicer than the current model and have brilliant interiors. The nose on them stone chips like anything because of the shape of it and there's a recal on the sealant strip along the top of the windscreen. It rubs on the roof line and rusts quite badly and is about a £900 repair as the roof needs repainted. They all do it and if it's out of warrantly I'm not sure it's coverered but might already have been done. Worth looking out for.

Thanks, I hadn't heard about that, something to look out for, mind you this has the big glass roof so painting it would be cheaper, I'm working nights this week so I'll popped down to look at tomorrow afternoon i reckon.
