dollywobbler Posted December 20, 2018 Author Posted December 20, 2018 Heater isn't that cool. I'm not sure what I was on about. It's pumping heat out nicely within a mile. It's not Volvo-quick, but it's not far off. egg, LightBulbFun and GrumpiusMaximus 3
They_all_do_that_sir Posted December 21, 2018 Posted December 21, 2018 It looks really good when wet doesn't it? A proper usable classic, in absolutely fantastic condition, that happens to be a fairly rare and unusual car especially in estate form. And it was £700 They really can't stay this cheap Sent from my TA-1012 using Tapatalk GrumpiusMaximus, dollywobbler, LightBulbFun and 2 others 5
Shirley Knott Posted December 21, 2018 Posted December 21, 2018 £20 seems very reasonable for a coolant change. I'm paying circa £15 for 5l of Comma supercoldmaster blue for the Volvo and a tenner for 5l of pink G12 spec stuff from ECP for the Lupo/Golf and still have to change it myself, makes me wonder why I bother. egg 1
Zelandeth Posted December 21, 2018 Posted December 21, 2018 You've reminded me that I really should change it in the van. Simply because I don't know when it was last done. It's spotlessly clean and probably fine...but at least I know then. I don't want to know how much coolant it takes though... LightBulbFun 1
dollywobbler Posted December 24, 2018 Author Posted December 24, 2018 Service time! Not a lot to report. Valve clearance 7 was loose, but all the others were so tight that the correct 0.20mm feeler gauge had no chance of going in. Worth doing. New dizzy cap and rotor arm will hopefully cure the sparking I'd seen between dizzy and block. I had ordered new leads, but failed to notice that I was ordering them from Euro Car Parts via Ebay. Naturally, they DON'T BLOODY FIT. Useless twats. A joyously simple engine to work on after the Lexus and Rover. Mind you, I didn't change the fuel filter, which is tucked up above the exhaust. I blame Volkswagen. They_all_do_that_sir, Yoss, RobT and 9 others 12
Yoss Posted December 24, 2018 Posted December 24, 2018 It is Volkswagens fault. The original carb'd cars just have one of those generic in line filters in the engine bay, just before the carb. Easy. It was VW who put that canister thing under the floor. egg and LightBulbFun 2
dollywobbler Posted December 24, 2018 Author Posted December 24, 2018 I knew it. Anyway, the other news is that I was finally brave enough to let it get hot enough for the fan to kick in. Infra red thermometer was reading 96 degrees at the bottom of the rad, but the fan kicked in just before I lost my nerve. Reassuring. The fan is very quiet, so could well have been working before and I just hadn't noticed. somewhatfoolish and LightBulbFun 2

dollywobbler Posted December 25, 2018 Author Posted December 25, 2018 Ha! Yes, servicing completed. 260 miles tomorrow. Haven't had a chance to fit the new proper-font number plates. I think I'm going to stick them on once I do the change, because screws can sod off. Remspoor 1
dollywobbler Posted December 25, 2018 Author Posted December 25, 2018 Video now I'm on an actual laptop. White-tinged spark plugs and general lack of oomph do make me think that fuel filter needs tackling. Why did they put it in such a STUPID place?! LightBulbFun, Remspoor and GrumpiusMaximus 3
LightBulbFun Posted December 25, 2018 Posted December 25, 2018 its very cool to see these videos especially I have never serviced a car before so its very interesting to watch what the done thing is I wish I could of see the money shot of the oil being poured into the funnel/filler hole (im not a complete stranger to whats done as I have asked friends about it before, but I still find it very interesting)
dollywobbler Posted December 25, 2018 Author Posted December 25, 2018 Yeah, I need to work on better angles. As ever, I was rushing a bit, as I was also washing/reproofing the 2CV's hood at the same time and all while trying to record a video and on Christmas Eve... LightBulbFun 1

Even if you were going to fit a filter in the engine bay you would still have to remove the potentially troublesome one. By the time you've got that out the easiest thing would just be to replace it whilst you're down there.
dollywobbler Posted December 30, 2018 Author Posted December 30, 2018 On Wednesday, we set off for adventure. First stop, Sussex. There was sunshine. And trees. Then it was time to head west. This is Amesbury. In Devon, an annoyingly red van was encountered. My sister had art on her wall. The black car intrigued me. Then, because things were so boring, I went to see Not2Grand, who similarly believes in enjoying cheap 1990s cars. Mrs DW had a drive. In fact, she had two as I couldn't get the keys back from her. Wales. Scenery. We're now home, some 600 odd miles later - probably. The odometer reckons we covered five miles... Car was boringly fine. It just gets on with it. Remarkably unfussed, remarkably pleasant. Good buy! Fumbler, LightBulbFun, GrumpiusMaximus and 16 others 19

Yoss Posted December 30, 2018 Posted December 30, 2018 Hi Ian, just watched your servicing video. I see you put 10/40 semi synthetic in. The correct oil should be 15/40 very much unsynthetic. Probably won't make much difference but might make the tappets one or two db quieter. I also very much like your fancy laser guided temperature gun thing. I bought a new thermostat for mine as I suspected the old one was stuck open. The new one has the gauge sitting here. And the heater is now much improved so I think your gauge is probably about right, maybe very slightly higher than this. I'm guessing anywhere in the solid white area is ok. egg, michael t, LightBulbFun and 3 others 6

I do agree that it can quieten down the engine, and the chatter is really noticeable at pretty much any speed below 60, but I do also feel semi-synth is better overall, and 10w will help the cold starts.
Yoss Posted December 30, 2018 Posted December 30, 2018 Fair enough, just thought I'd point it out. Carry on.
dollywobbler Posted December 30, 2018 Author Posted December 30, 2018 Fair enough, just thought I'd point it out. Carry on. No worries. It's a source of endless arguments in the 2CV world! My rule tends to be if it the engine doesn't blow itself to bits, it's probably ok. I've never had an engine blow itself to bits. GrumpiusMaximus 1
Remspoor Posted December 31, 2018 Posted December 31, 2018 Hang on.... before you go, whats with the smidget? Something left over from Mad Max?
dollywobbler Posted December 31, 2018 Author Posted December 31, 2018 Not a Midget. It's an Amazon! Video now available on all good browsers. To be honest, not much happens. RayMK and Yoss 2
Remspoor Posted January 1, 2019 Posted January 1, 2019 Now I have watched the video I can see I got it horribly wrong. Now getting recommendations of videos made by 2grand. even one form a insurance company which includes a nicely kept Malaysian product.
mat_the_cat Posted January 1, 2019 Posted January 1, 2019 Cheers, but having run 2CV engines on 10w40 semi for many years (also 15w40 mineral originally, or even 20w50), I'm happy to take my chances. They'll be the same viscosity when hot anyway, and the viscosity of a cold 10w40 oil will still be much thicker than a hot 15w40, so I don't follow the logic why this could be a problem...

Felly Magic Posted January 1, 2019 Posted January 1, 2019 You have finally bought a decent car Ian, and you are now saying to yourself 'why the hell didn't I buy one ages ago?' It even has the good Dr Wobbler's official stamp, people did take the piss out of them, but none of these clowns actually drove one. You haven't done the back seat trick of complete removal in minutes yet with NO tools for that instant van conversion tooSavvy and Yoss 2
dollywobbler Posted January 1, 2019 Author Posted January 1, 2019 Is that Mrs Wobbler up a tree?Yes. She does that quite often. This time, she at least had children to excuse her behaviour.
