V8 itch.

German stuff has issues - Audi V8's suffer with timing chain issues. The engine in my 545 suffers from bad valve stem oil seals and leaky coolant transfer pipe.

Rather ominously, my car puffs smoke when hot which means the seals will need doing at some point which means £££ - my arse is doing a good impression of pingu's mouth.

All the cool kids think the V8 is the bees knees. They’re nearly right. I used to think that too. I had an ordinary Jag V8 and felt like a Winrar. Then, however, I saw that what you really needed was a supercharged V8. There is no going back after that l. Don’t hesitate, buy now! Buy this slightly broken one in fact. Innit M8

Cheap Rolls Royce?

Run the hell away. There is no such thing...they will bankrupt you.

Okay...fine, there is occasionally an actual cheap one...but they're one in a million, and are usually found through word of mouth and an odd story than on eBay.

Rover P6 or SD1 would probably be my choice for something that you're unlikely to lose a huge amount of dosh on. For all the Rover V8 has its flaws, it's got huge character and makes a truly glorious noise with the right exhaust setup...being so plentiful means that pretty much everything is documented a million times over.

Lexus is probably the sensible money though given they seem to be worth buttons these days.

Jags are bloody lovely, but having helped a friend work on them for several years I'd never actually own one as they're swines to work on. Pretty much any job starts with the words "dismantle the entire car first." Parts are bloody expensive too.

Eddy's Caddy is the only proper way forward.

You know it, I know it, everyone with half a brain knows it.

So why is this thread trolled with all this other tosh?

To be fair, Lexus might well be a good idea, as would Rover.  But real, proper V8s are made in Detroit, with an iron block and a BFO carb.  Accept no substitutes!

I know it’s stupid/economic suicide but I’d still, without doubt without thought do the cheap Rolls thing. What a way to go!

Oh...the addendum regarding the Rolls...

If you're prepared for the risk and aware of the complexity of them and parts prices...go for it. Oh, and they like to rust too.

They're bloody gorgeous things and like nothing else.

A Silver Spirit *will* be on my driveway one day...

It might* not be as bad an idea as you think.

Years ago a guy I worked with bought a right shitpile of a Rolls, literally dragged it out of some blokes garden. He payed very little for it and it was awful!

He wanted it for racing so stripped it to a bare shell almost and sold just about all the oily bits, glass, trim, interior and so on. He made quite a tidy profit on it then bangered the shell which lasted two or three meetings.

Maybe doing something similar for a road legal car could work?

I’d end up falling in love with it though and refusing to let it go then spending a fortune restoring it though!

That's done well to get to £1500 with a rough body and a knackered engine

My V8 ownership started with

Audi A8 4.2q

Jaguar Stype 4.0

XK8 4.0

Maserati 4200

Mustang 5.0

I fucking love them

The super V8 is a carriage for a gentleman , lovely

Nothing cool ever came out of Japan. Get over it.

as would Rover.

But they require more tinkering than an old Lampredi V12.

Truer words were never written.

Ls400 a great car, but as my brother put it: "it's the first V8 I've ever driven, but the car is about not knowing it even has an engine"

It's powerful, and sounds amazing, but the ls400 isn't about driving fast, it's about being smooth.

Japanese interpretation of, ooh, let me see... a Cadillac perhaps!

Yeah it’s a rolling parts car really, but there are some expensive bits on it so it will always have a residual value. It’s on there with an honest description and people can make what they want of it. That super V8 is pretty good value for money really.

Look, you of all people should post in the right thread!

Search term you're looking for is "low cost big liability" over on the Modernz forum ;)

(It's a quality thread too, look at the X5 that Kiltox was pressured into buying found on there)

Every man should own a V8 in his life. Infact you can absolutely not call yourself a man until you have!

Make the change.

Damn, that's fragile...

X5... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Even with a V8 in, an X5 isn't fit to lick the boots of anything built in the Home Of The V8.  Come on, there's no contest.

Oh!

Vauxhall Monaro - the supercharged one.

Mate has one, and it is utterly bonkers. The only noise more addictive than a V8 with a good exhaust is a V8 with a good exhaust *and* a screamer of a supercharger bolted on top of it.

Have a look at some videos on YouTube.

I keep a total of 18 cylinders on the road most of the time. V8 is chump change.

Discovery can be cheap. Head gasket and impossible to get to HT leads are the fuckers. ONCE THOSE ARE CHANGED to better things, it goes quite well and sounds the nuts.

You can’t beat 200bhp from 7 litres right enough :)

Think that's bad? I had a Chevy Celebrity with the 2.9 V6. All the financial ruin of a V8 with none of the performance or street cred.

I'm doing this wrong aren't I?

A mechanic told me that if your dipstick gets a quart low on oil with that V-6, it means replace engine.

What does that make a man with three...compensating for something?

Never had one.  Want one.  Looking at cheap Silver Spirits on Evilbay.

Send help.

The Shiter's weapon of choice can only be the Bentley Arnage Green Label. With a BMW V8 engine in basically a Rolls-Royce everything else, then you can truly have the worst of both worlds :)
