Suzuki G wagon - Vauxhall Agila

A chap at a show told me about a disastrous attempt to import the Dacia 1300 in the late 70's while the R12 was still in production. They ended up with loads of half dismantled new cars around the warehouse as the Romanians wouldn't send them any parts. He worked there and then left the motor trade for good.

The Corsa selection is more blatant, on the newer ones they change some of the bodywork and panels and lights, but it's still the same car underneath, ergo badge engineering.

An "interesting" fact about the Corsa B, it was still in Production up until 2016 in Argentina and outlived the model that replaced it, and the model that replaced the replacement.

The Corsa C ended production in 2012 and the Corsa D ended in 2014.

If we're talking about cars that look a little different but are almost identical under the skin, The Fiat Spider is a new Mx-5,

The Fiat Fullback is a Mitsubishi L200,

The Fiat Sedici is a Suzuki Sx4,

And the vans are all shared with Citroen, Peugeot etc too.

Also the Fiat Grande Punto and Vauxhall Corsa D are identical under the body, The Fiat 500 shares its platform and body structure with the second generation Ford Ka.

Fiat are pretty much the masters of using other peoples designs/co developing models.

They haven't made a fully independent model since about 2001.

Were there any examples of this before the Triumph Acclaim?

not complete cars, but Peugeot, Renault and Volvo shared an engine factory since 1971, it still exists but belongs 100% to PSA now. The engines  (not only the famous V6, they build far more 4 cylinder engines there) were used in many cars and also sold to other manufacturers: Delorean, Citroen, Talbot, Dodge, Eagle, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, UMM, many sports cars and even tanks and a plane.

it takes a pair of PRV V6 to power this

The Indian montego was exactly the same but fitted with the 2.0 Perkins prima. I think they only sold them for about a year or two. Abject failure.

All Voxholl are shi... replicants

Combi

Pugger...

Lemony...

It hadn't occurred to me until you posted that that the PSA takeover of Vauxhall would mean that the Combi would become a Berlingo instead of a Fiat Doblo, though it's blindingly obvious that it would. That's possibly a shame as I thought the last generation Doblo was nicer to drive than the Berlingo.

I always found it a bit odd that Fiat and PSA collaborated on the Eurovans, the big (Sevel?) Dispatch/Boxer/Ducato, and the tiny Bipper/Nemo/QuboFiorino, but the Berlingo/Partner and Doblo remained quite different models.

That is incredible that number of variants. The Victoria looks good - why never done here instead of the Allagro?

Chevette/Kadett/Holden Gemini, the Isuzu one whose name I can never remember and definitely at least one American brand used this car.

Ah, the GM T Platform. At least a dozen cars based on that one.

The Australian Government promoted badge engineering in the 80s and 90s to boost the (dying) car industry.

There are many other articles out there on this subject, worth some research if you are interested in these things.

When politicians start meddling in the car industry it often does not end well. The current diesel fiasco with sales off a cliff is all down to political interference at the wrong moment.

Mondeo and X-type

L322 Range Rover and E53 X5 - it was fun pointing that out in a Range Rover group. Wow, they take themselves and their "fatties" seriously.

Ford Probe and Mazda MX6

Ford Maverick and Mazda Tribute

Not identical but 99% the same and both sold alongside each other and developed jointly.

The Yanks had a lot of this in the 90s - selling Hondas and Accuras alongside each other as different brands - see also Nissan and Infiniti and most obviously, Toyota and Lexus.

Back in the day there was even an Austin version of the Morris 1000 van - identical except for badges and grille and done when the dealers were still separate and Austin had a gap in the range.

Landcrab Austin and Morris 1800s were the same apart from daft stuff like rear lights.

I love this topic. Ones the spring to mind:

Mazda 121 / Kia Pride / Ford Festiva (US)

Then Mazda 121 and Fiesta in the UK

Naza branded Kias in Malaysia

Lonsdales and SAOs

All current Dacias are sold as Renaults in other markets

Suzuki Swift / Subaru Justy / Chevrolet Sprint / Geo Metro / Pontiac something or other

And, just to pay back the compliment, the Austin Metro van could also be had with Morris badging for the first year or two of production.

Platform sharing is not the same as badge engineering.

I know. I was just winding up X-type and L322 owners.

When I had my Mk3 Mondeo I had a front spring snap (as they often do) - changing the strut I noticed the bracket supporting the brake flexi was stamped "Jaguar"

I love winding up Range Rover Sport types by pointing out it's a Disco 3 but with less space :)

The volume of BMW content in R75/ZT is silly too - especially the frankly weird electrical systems.

If I’m right in remembering the old Mazda 121 was a badge engineered Ford Fiesta....

...whilst the 323 came out as a Kia Pride and a Sao Penza.

The Kia Pride was based on the original 121, the 323 was available as a Ford Laser in some parts of the world, and the 626 as a Ford Telstar.
