Insurance renewal rip offs

Just got a quote from Adrian Flux for my 1993 shite astra estate, tpf&t, 3k miles a year so I can use it to take rubbish to the tip and collect a few things. Will cost me £495. It's not even worth that. This is the same company who insure my mk1 mr2 for £85 with an agreed value of £1700. The reason is that they don't consider it a classic apparently. Doesn't make much sense to me. At this rate I will have to move it on which is a shame.

Go elsewhere mate, if it's your hack, try the price comp sites first then give the likes of Aviva & Carole Nash a go. Had good service out of the latter.

Shirley is not too do with how much the car is worth but how likely you are to hit something worth 20 times as much.

Maybe but surely I'm more likely to hit something in a mid engined, rwd car weighing 2/3rd's as much with twice the power?

The sales assistant said it wasn't considered a classic at 23 years. Something to do with some cars are classics at 15, some 20 and some have to wait a lot longer to attain that status. I suppose a lowly Vauxhall diesel estate might have to wait forever...

Very true and there are always n-number of other criteria that affects the premium but ultimately, a diesel Astra estate isn't exactly madbugger/boyracer material is it?

My lowest value cars have always been the most expensive to insure. Something to do with the fact that apparently low values = Owner won't give a shit about it.

And there's the problem.  Try a proper broker as previously suggested.  I use Peter James.

Maybe because they're easy to break into too although I can't think it would be much fun to steal or worth breaking for parts?

I have found that fully comp is often cheaper than TPF&T.

I can't for a second think why that would be but I'll give it a try, thanks.

Try the meerkat/money supermarket/etc for regular insurance. For cars the classic brokers get funny about it van worth out cheaper on occasion.

Adrian Flux  :angry008:

Used to use them, now I'd rather walk than get a quote off them.

They mis-quoted me once, then denied all knowledge of the quote via a snotty letter, so I sent the actual quote on email back to them........got radio silence back.

They tried to cancel my policy for not declaring an accident I'd never had. And I'm still annoyed about the whole Y10 saga as well

I had the same when I was looking for a cheap automatic hatchback - shitty Pugs of the same vintage were much higher than the cars value, sometimes over twice what the car would cost me.

I found a Mercedes 300e petrol very cheap, and insured (with a value of £1200 for £90). Insurance is like betting on roulette at times.

Being a MK3 Astra might not help. Aren't these one of the most stolen cars in the UK?

I think you only need to walk past one with a wire coat hanger and the drivers doors flings open and the engines fires up.

They have particularly obnoxious staff from my dealings with them.

Just tried confused.com. Cheapest is first central at £405 who are a bit rubbish by all accounts. It doesn't help that I can't use my ncb as I have 13 years on my Alfa. I'll try some of those other companies and see how I get on. I could try a multi car policy but I still have 10 months to go on the Alfa.

I would try to get one of the brokers to accept it as a classic since you don't need ncd for that. My V6 XM cost £140.

In built anti-theft aesthetics.

That has always been the case for me and thats for a normal car policy.

Thanks for the replies shiters. I think I need to put a bit more effort in to get a lower quote. I'll let you know how I get on.

My similar enough Mk3 Astra hack is insured with Footman James as a classic, can't remember the price but less than £100.

The Mk2 Astra/Belmont was the stolen one as so easy to break into.  Mk3 I think fixed the daft easy to break into issue.

With admiral (maybe others too) you could start the Astra now for 12 months put Alfa details in and they will give a price now for Alfa for last 2 months of policy, but you don't pay until that cover starts.

Footman James do an online classic quote. The prelude cost £99 for a year.

Some companies insist that to have a car on a classic policy you also have to have a daily driver.

Cheaper to get fully comp than tpft, cheaper if left on the road than garaged. Bloody weird buggers insurers!

My modern has just had a renewal quote for £165 but the same company on an online quite was £260 for exactly the same cover! I used to be faithfull to companies but now I shop around like a bastard every year - it's the only way...

That's worth a look. Thanks. How did I manage before I found this site!
