Models of cars I really liked that were never replaced.

Back on topic; it seemed the Japanese just sort of gave-up around 2005 No more, or lack lusture replacements for;

Nissan 200SX/Silvia and 300ZX

MR2, Celica and Supra

RX7 and Eunos Cosmo

NSX, Integra and Prelude

Mitsubishi GTO/3000GT and VR4 Galant.

Totally agree - always fancied a 3000GT (ideally badged as a Dodge stealth with the Dodge bumpers).

Would add MX 6 which was IMHO one of the most nicely proportioned cars evah.

I think I mentioned the MX-6 in my OP. :)

I quite like them too but if I were to buy a Twin Turbo, engine-out-for-every-job, wallet crushing Japanese Coupe it would have to be a Z32 300ZX. In black.

Haven't encountered a Probe in 20 years but they seemed crap then, regardless of the badge. I remember calipers seizing, distributors failing and interiors falling apart.

Seem to remember electric window mechanisms scratching the glass too.

Only the rears.

.

2.5 with the immobiliser fitted.

Yep.

Didn't help that were all old stock.

A couple I only just noticed...

Vauxhall Monaro/VXR8, presumably died with Holden?

Volvo V40, Volvo don't seem to have any hatchback cars now, just saloon, estate and SUV. These days I'd probably only ever buy a hatch or estate.

lancia delta, pretty sure they did replace it, but it was like replacing an oven with a fridge and calling the job a good un.

Honda Accord Coupe - always like the look of 'em - can't fully explain why!

Volvos with big clunky and easy to use controls - not a fucking touch screen

French cars generally with pliant suspension

and because it's recently been killed off (and we have one) Mitsubishi Shogun

Original Merc A class. An astonishing amount of room in what when parking felt like a tiny car. Shame Merc’s bravery wasn’t rewarded in sales.  Surely a more interesting and innovative  car than the current A - which seems  to be basically a really expensive Megane.

I liked the old '98 A class, they were really useful easy to live with cars that suffered not because they weren't built like a real Mercedes, but because the press went to town on it when it failed a test  no sane person would ever attempt on a public road (and one which several cars at the time had failed just as badly).

No one remembers that the original Audi twatty killed paying customers who thought they were buying a competent 4 wheel drive sports car that displayed fatal oversteer on high speed bends but everyone knows about the little Mercedes hatchback that fell over when an imaginary moose jumped out in front of it on a test track.

Yeah, they were 100% Commodore.

Honda Accord Coupe

Those were US made, and coupes were offered until 2017 over there. Not sure why they were canned over here as they seemed to sell alright - also, at the time, things like the 3 series coupe were everywhere! They disappeared around the time all the Japanese manufacturers simultaneously forgot how to make fun, interesting cars.

I know the Elk Swerve test result took a long time to shift.  If you took off the 3 pointed stars it was just another mini MPV to the casual observer.  The next generation was a little better lookswise, but it took until the 3rd to actually look like a Mercedes.

1. The small car. Wouldn't it be nice to have small cars back. Properly small cars rather than shorter versions of big cars.

2. The big estate which actually had some space in it The CX was the gold standard but the big Volvos, Pugs, Vauxhalls, Fords and Mercs were all there. Properly big estates with longer wheelbases, longer load beds and square backs so you can actually fit stuff in. Now every estate is just a steaming pile of slopey roofed #lifestyle wank.

3. Cars that had glass in them. Do you remember when cars had windows? These days you drive round feeling like Ned Kelly must have.

Fiat Tempra, & in particular, the SW.

I got my folks a pre registered 2.0 SX SW cheap when I was working at an Alfa dealer back in 1993, when the time came to replace it in 2006, all there was was the Stilo SW (too small & I had misgivings about their longevity) & Croma (too big & not really a Fiat) & the 156 SW was "too exotic" for them.

In the end we got a Volvo V50 1.8 estate, which they still have & has admittedly been very reliable (so was the Tempra), but is boring as hell to drive (Dad hates it with a passion) & is noticeably less economical than the Tempra.

Fiat semi rectified the situation with the New Tipo estate (I`m ignoring the inflated 500`s), but the interiors feel decidedly low rent compared to the velour clad, digital dashed Tempra, & the boots tiny in comparison too...

Did anyone mention the Subaru Justy?

I know the Gallant got a mention but I had a Mistubishi Carisma (stop laughing) but it was a very good family car, but Mitsubishi stopped making family cars. They now only make small car, small crossover and mahoosive SUV and utility vehicles.

Did anyone mention the Lancer too? I'm sure no one misses the last gen of Lancer but the Evo is missed for sure.

TL:DR bring back the Justy, that could be a permanent AWD supermini, that ought to sell.

And some or all of Mistubishi family size cars including an AWD beast.

Further, I think Skoda should not call the car that's near identical to the Octavia 'Rapid', what they should have done in my omniscient* opinion is made a budget Audi R8.

Or, they should have made the Octavia floor plan with the front sub frame and engine at the rear, so a rear-engined rear-drive family car, like the MGF or the MR2 are made but with decent rear seats and a frunk.

Honda Accord estate has ridiculous boot space, and cool folding flat rear seats. Incredibly useful.

Simple, strong 4x4s are never around now. Think Fourtrak, Trooper, Original Disco. Nothing to do a job, just fashion accessories.

Look at Land Rover, for decades the leader out of a thin choice of japanese competition in terms of 4x4 hard utility, now just the wheeled equivalent to a Gucci hand bag.

They don't even have a hard 4x4, even though I'm sure the Discos and all 4 Range Rovers are capable. You won't want to throw a few dirty sheep or a few dirty dogs in the back, or oily chains etc etc.

Landcruiser for the win, clearly.

The thought just came to me that if Skoda made a rear engined rear drive Rapid on the Octavia floor plan would mean that VW could make their KDF Wagen (aka Beetle) on the same car. I mean, they already make all their cars across all their brands on pretty much the same modular chassis.

RIP the Nissan Skyline R34. "Replaced" by the R35, A flabby and insipid set of cup holders on wheels aimed at the US market.
