...A budget of £11k would avoid the fear that that sum would be swallowed up in nursing home fees in 20 years time (many of our generation have seen this happen to elderly relatives) I would prefer a balance of £10k car and £1k Emergency Repair fund rather than the other way round, but I would be interested and hopefully amused to see what you come up with :)....

Instead of a car, what about paying for a decent funeral in advance*?

Dark grey Volvo estate, then.

Or if you want progress to be swift and not be rocked and bounced about, a CX Safari.

I saw what you did there... :-)

There is no antidote to old age, you just have to embrace it.

From the eBay thread, the 2.9 Jaguar.

Just needs a travel blanket and a tin of sweets and you're set.

£10k left for spoiling the grandchildren will ensure you remain the coolest of grandads.

Can you get a decent Stag for this sort of budget? I'm never sure where they are value wise.

Or a Scimitar GTC, perfect for getting confused and driving into a shop whilst getting your Werthers.

Otherwise as mentioned previously a W124 cabriolet, but be quick, they're going silly price wise .

An old' 'proper' Saab 900 convertible, you could probably get One of the best out there and still have change at the moment, although they seem to be doubling in value every 2 or 3 years.

i just want to know at what age do i start to wear a shirt and tie with a nice jumper and some suit trousers every day

I'm nearly there. Just the tie and jumper to go.

Another vote for an old Jag or Rover Sterling. Just waft along at your own pace in serenity, gently pressing your brogues into the Axminster if you fancy getting a bit more of a move on.

For some reason I though 'Triumph Stag', then went to see what they fetch and was rather surprised to find they're a far more handsome car than I'd remembered.

Quite a few on our road dress like that. I think they see me as odd.

I've been to a few funerals in jeans, by request.

Mine will be one of them.

Okay, off the wall/blue sky thinking/just running it up the flagpole to see who salutes type suggeston, fuck cars, buy a watch! 11K might just get you a nice Daytona or a Patek or IWC or something really cool which you can wear for always and when you snuff it, it'll be worth eleventy million to leave the kids! Plus, storage is not an issue! :)

Or, for those with sense, buy a CLK convertible, has to be an earlier one (208 rather than 209 - because the 208 has the fancy dancing single wiper and the 209 has normal ones - how boring!) I have really quite fallen for mine but I thnk I'd get a 430 for that V8 waffle and apperently they go a bit well as well!  4 seats for the win.

i would also second the motion for the SL cars, but, decent 129 are getting really pricey now and at top of your budget and the rear seats (not all of them have them as they were an option) are small with zero legroom, ideal for dogs, not so good for humans! The later R230 models are a nightmare. 500 have fancy suspension/brakes etc and it WILL go wrong, the only question is: when? They are expensive to fix as well which is why the later cars are now cheaper than the earlier ones! 350 (3.7 litre) are more reliable with normal suspension but you don't get the sonorous V8 engine.

I'm amazed nobody has suggested this yet...

Never got the watch thing, although I can appreciate that others do. But y tho?

A 1984 Seiko (cheap one) that my father in law got as a retirement present* from his firm still runs. A 2007 Rado (not cheap) bought for Mrs Beard for our wedding anniversary by me has had to be repaired many times. Still works, but has cost a fair bit to keep it so.

Bit like cars then.

There isn't a set age it happens by, you simply wake up one morning, get dressed and realise that it has already happened without you noticing.

Unfortunately this happened to me not long after my 19th birthday, which was worrying.

Got to be a Volvo C70 I reckon. Solid, reliable, floppytop, 4 proper seats, good petrol engines. Prob not quite 20 years old but insurance will still be cheap. Grab a mint one for a couple of grand and spend a bit of the rest on having some fun with it, mega european road trips or whatever.

Also I don't get the watch thing either. My phone tells me the time, if I want to look smart I put on a 60-odd year old wind-up watch my grandad left me. Worth very little but looks very nice. It even works, although I rarely bother to wind it up. Might as well wear a gold necklace for all the function it has.

Monaro. Modern but with old skool running gear that can be serviced on your drive without the fear of being taken to the cleaners by a specialist.

You should get one because I can't.

My boss had one until recently. It would definitely fit the bill, apart from the soft top preference.

When has this become a bad thing?

I can't consider that to be a tartan Thermos flask. More a crystal decanter with matching snifters.

A tartan Thermos would not however be out of place in the back seat of such a fine conveyance, especially if you're going on holiday (intentionally; not by accident). Perhaps to your country house. In Northumberland.
