Edd (Crack On) China's Garage Revival

Watched it.. not bad.. golf owner had all the hard work done.. it's more like a knowledgeable mate coming round to lend a hand (that pilot episode anyway). I love edd... but something is missing... and no it's not Mike!

It was ok I thought.  As with all of these things, I wish there had been more detail.  The whole shennanigans of the legal situation surrounding the engine were interesting - although the owner talking about how grateful he was that Edd had found this out felt incredibly staged, and in reality Edd didn't do that most likely.  The owner seemed like a nice bloke and I quite liked his comment about the sound of the carbs.  Made me laugh out loud.

Bits of it felt forced and a bit rushed.  The headlining installation was hardly riveting but covered sufficiently but the actual fitting of the engine was definitely rushed.

I'd watch it if it were a series.  There was one series on YouTube of something (American) I watched a while back, sponsored by a large auto company (cannot remember the name or details!)  They just glossed over everything, even though the premise is basically the same.  Edd was much better but could definitely do with some better editing and less staging.

I quite enjoyed the headlining bit. I've really got no idea how they work, other than the shit saggy cardboard headliner in my old Range Rover (which I just removed).

Fair comment.  I just personally didn't find it entertaining.  However Edd did sort it out in his methodical calm way, however he left it to the owner and his mates to finish it (so they story goes)

When they drove the car at the end the headlining was less than perfect, it was all bunched up around one of the b-pillars.

I thought it was pretty good. Would watch again.

I wonder if I could get him to come down under and help me un-fuck my Hyundai!

Job 1) Weld up rusted out strut tower

Job 2) Replace clutch

Job 3) Re-lacqure paintwork

Job 4) De-mould interior

"It was my Grandmother's car, She bought it new from Tynan Motors Kogorah in 1999, It has huge sentimental value to me..."

It's called Garage Squad and it is the same basic idea.

There we go. Cheers!

I liked the technical bits on these shows, I can relate to it.

Used to fast forward the boring 'iconic' car shit where mike starts wanking over a Golf Mk1. He loves everything he climbs in, he'd get in a Yugo 45, instead of saying 'yes its a bit cack actually' he starts with the usual shit about how he'd be buried in one if he half the chance.

Haha - nail on end! Brewer must have thr longest dreams in the history of mankind given every motor he apparently lusted after in his youth... rocket

Yes, fair comment again. I think I'd better stop digging a hole for myself on that point!

Anyway, it was a pilot that will get refined, no doubt.

I have a broken Mondeo he can get me enthused about....

Seriously tempted to see if he fancies a trip out to NZ to fix my Manta!

Okay, I didn't like it. Now what?

- The whole thing was too stilted for my taste

- There wasn't anything to learn for me

- The Norwegian was too taciturn

- I don't like VW Golfs

- I don't like the mods they did to a rather good example of a car I don't like, although to be fair they are easily reversible

- The whole thing was rather pretentious

- The car was way too good to begin with

- Edd made a big mistake when he walked away from WD

- If there were funny bits I didn't notice

- The whole thing was tediously slow paced, apart from the time lapse bits

- They made a big Herman around the legality of the mods just to drive the car on mock plates in the end

What was actually good?

Nothing, really. If it wasn't downright bad, it was merely meh.

HYPOCRITE MODE:

But do you like anything, good sir?

Not a dig, I was ambivalent about the film also.

WD, TGT, Roadkill, CWM, JLG and a lot more.

Is that okay with you?

Decent list.

And yes, I'm one to talk/post.

I likes Eddy. So I'm going to watch it even if there is nobody to 'old out yer and'

I think Fuzz T has a proper series in him , Car SOS is pretty good but drop the posh wanker and just fuzz doing his shizzle would be great

Why? it's a perfectly reasonable thing to say.

I read that he's going to be doing an Alfasud but I haven't got the cable or Sky channel...

If it was Wheeler Dealers without Mike Brewer, I'd be all over it like a rash.  I never bothered watching his shit on there, just switched channel until it was on to the interesting stuff.

Edd China fixing cars in detail without any other stuff around it would be great.

'Hi, for the next two weeks (for no apparent reason or conceit) I'm taking a look at a 1981 Austin Princess. The head gasket is buggered and the suspension has gone to shit but here's a detailed look at it and how we go about fixing it.  With added welding montages'.

Of course, that would never get past a TV executive.  Bastards.

Who did that previously?? Ahh, Mark Evans. I remember a bloke with a stack of Capri's.

Wreck Rescue.

Loved Lizze and her Frogeye (Sprite, not facial feature).

I still have nightmares about those adverts feat Mike Brewer and his equally fat and annoying son.

Mark Evans is one of my favourite car TV presenters. Easy to forget that he's actually a vet by trade!

That Frogeye hasn't had an MOT for a while (its exempt) but has had its tax exemption renewed recently. So looks like it's probably still on the road.

I liked those mark Evans programs too but I think he’s now doing main stream tv stuff as a vet . The last one was the mgb one, which was 2005?

Looked like a pitch, begging to be allowed back on to wider audience.  Unfortunately tried to be too like every other mainstream car prog.and while I'm sure he's a nice guy, despite his strange fascination with waterless coolant and other snake oil hokeum, the prog. leaned too far to being an entertainment show instead of a car programme.  Good thing that the guy had already planned everything, had the car, the gear, the tools and the space, but Edd was around to help fit the headlining, help drop the engine in and, "know" the local wheel guy.  I'll be surprised if this gets picked up.  Maybe try emulating the Youtubers like Big Clive, but doing it in Eric The Car Guys workshop.

I spent 33 minutes of my life learning how to make a simple circuit board with Big Clive on this morning.

Big Clive is fan-fucking-tastic.

Posted

I was also watching Big Clive today.... The detonator with the cats, rejigging an LED lights, some strobes....

He's really good at explaining circuits and why they work like they do. Sometimes I get a bit crimpy-arse when he's waving his hands around near live wires but he's quite safe really. Usually.

Also, EEVBlog. An Australian so 1000% less relaxing voice but sometimes I need to hear him lose his shit over a particular way of connecting two things together. The two balance each other out perfectly
