sodding DVLA scrapping the V888 service. Gah!

Yes it is, the confusion has been the recent refusal to provide logbook photocopies as they did before

The main reason for V888 requests still stands:

We cannot release the information that you requested.

The reason(s) you have provided for wanting the name(s) and address of the previous keeper(s) of your vehicle does not meet the reasonable cause criteria that allows us to release this information. Reasonable cause is not defined in legislation, but the government’s policy is that the request should relate to the vehicle  or its use following incidents where there may be liability on the part of the driver or keeper, for example:

•   where details of a previous keeper(s) are needed for court proceedings

•   finding out who was responsible for an accident

•   tracing the registered keeper of an abandoned vehicle

•   tracing the registered keeper of a vehicle parked on private land

Further guidance on what is reasonable cause is published online at www.gov.uk/request-information-from-dvla

Quite likely part of the shake-up due to GDPR

Your experience differs from mine. That's a good thing and I'm pleased to hear the scroat got arrested but on the whole the police won't be bending over backwards for a resolution. Could be that they probably are bonded by the CPS who want something concrete to take the perpetrator to court.

GMP weren't interested?

I am genuinely* stunned.

This is the same GMP which bought a Golf R32 patrol car and wrote it off in an hour.

Which is why things are going so wrong. You can't run a government like a business. You can't just keep cutting back on stuff that isn't financially viable. Housing old people isn't financially viable. The NHS doesn't seem very financially viable. Government needs to do things, because they need to be done. That's rather the point. By ignoring low-level crime, you're effectively encouraging it. If there's no deterrent or justice, then what really is the point?

Absolutely, well said that man. The sooner everyone stops looking for the profit in everything and starts looking at the end result the better the world will be.

I'm not suggesting we turn into 1950's Russia but there must be a better way than how the carry on is at the moment.

I'm going to gently ask that we avoid politics before the thread degenerates into a slanging match and gets locked.

Also please no more encouragements towards vigilante justice.

Problem here is that politics and political decision making is directly responsible for the outcome of this vehicle, the loss to the owner and the general feeling of disgust towards both the thieves and the response by the Police. If we don't discuss politics, we don't get to the root of the problem. A slagging match will achieve nothing, but not discussing politics just allows politicians to continue on the disasterous path they seem to be on.

Also please no more encouragements towards vigilante justice.

That does need to stop. Breaking the law to punish lawbreakers makes the irony meter explode.

If she manages to get it in to a daily rag, this may actually spur on GMP to do something, plus offers to help may come flooding in by the truckload (I hope)

I should think that van is wearing a new plate by now.

Probably but again, criminals are really dumb sometimes.

I emailed the DVSA about finding which garage last tested it (or that plate anyway) and they said that information isn't in the public domain "at the moment" but did confirm that any MOT station can reprint an MOT test sheet with a registration number for no more than £10. If NL03 NKK[/i] is a legitimate plate for that can it could help narrow down where it might be.

No need to get to the root of the problem on here though.

We are just a car website, it was a stolen car, it has been found, JM has made a very generous offer along with some other members.  Thats the point of this post.

Why it was stolen, who stole it, what society ills are responsible, the politics are not really for discussion here mainly because it always ends up in personal insults.

Cars not politics please :-)

I think that's wrong. But I shan't argue, as that's exactly what we're trying to avoid.

Was nobody else taught not to talk politics, religion or money whilst in polite company?  It is my absolute pet hate - but I realise I'm probably a very old fashioned man in a relatively young body.

Although not so young that I can get down to do a sump plug without making that massive groaning sound old blokes do when they tie their shoelace up.

Back on topic - if it was me running this PR campaign, I'd be getting those pictures out YESTERDAY - and aiming it fairly and squarely at owners who are naive enough to think their PaJ is safe - street parked, in a city.  We can argue until the cows come home and go out again about principles and the good old days, but ultimately people need to get real.

Perhaps 2010's Russia though is more on the mark

Fuckin' 'ell.

That pretty much sums it up.

It looks worse because its a 2cv,and everything can be unbolted in seconds.

The biggest issue to be learnt isn't about the police, who did it or how,but thast people with cars now worth many thousands that can be stolen using the back of a spoon in seconds need to wake up and start using some security.fuel and power cut offs, steering wheel locks, plugged into the mains etc.

Posted

That shows that whoever did the stripping knows his way around 2CVs. Inside job, in the context of the 2CV community.

I have come round to this thought, very reluctantly.

The steering lock was smashed and the car towed away on a rope. No fuel or battery cut off would have worked. Most door locks can be opened with a biro.

Absolute bastards.

However, I don't think I'd let "them" win. The car can be built back up with the right bits to hand, to let it go would be a real shame. It's still "her" car. It could have been worse, they could have set fire to the remains.

Sad to say but we can't leave cars like this parked up in the open any more without some shitbag getting involved. They're too much of a magnet for thieves who'll strip them and flog the bits, though I appreciate something quite nasty may have gone on here.

It's come to a point where I won't leave my Minor on it's own for long. Some bastard will have it away, strip it for bits by the end of the day and push the rest into a lake.

I'm only a few miles from Didsbury and am fairly handy with a tool kit if I can help in any way.

Let's see how many freshly-restored / recommissioned* 2CVs make an appearance this year.....

But they do the opposite of ignoring low level crime.

A friend of mine was found in possession of 1.125 Grams of Marijuana and subsequently prosecuted. 1.125 Grams.

The scale they used to weigh it cost the tax payer £40,000.00. That's Forty Thousand Pounds.

For a scale that can weigh 1.125 Grams of weed, for God's sake.

I'm also amazed that there is never the slightest shortage of resources when there is a chance to tolchock people

who exercise their right to protest against wars and tyranny. Never.

This. Sadly.

Those pictures are truly grim, if that was my car I’d be devastated and murderously angry. It’s bad enough any car being nicked and trashed but for a classic to fall victim is so much worse. These cars aren’t just replaceable transport to people. They’re like a family member.

It’s such a sad state of affairs isn’t it that in this day and age society has degraded itself to such a state where you genuinely fear for having nice things.

As mentioned earlier here, the thought of my Capri being left anywhere other than in my view or it’s locked garage scares me shitless. Not only of it being stolen by some worthless scum but by the tossers inhabiting this once great country that no longer care for or respect anyone else’s property. I know it’s not everyone but...

Even the Granada I was scared to park it anywhere.

Unfortunately I don’t see any end to this sort of thing. The police are under huge pressure nowadays and only seem interested in raking cash in quickly and easily. Actual real crimes like this cars theft take time and money to investigate so it’s not worth their hassle to go after. On the other hand it is easy and profitable to shaft people via cameras for going over the speed limit instead.

I genuinely despair of this country sometimes!

That Transit's been running about sans rent & rates since last year, it's bound to ping up an ANPR cam before long

As shit as all this is, that car hasn't been torched and is still eminently viable. If it was mine I'd want it back.

Aye, very difficult to see a positive if I was faced with my car looking like that.   However, it is a chance to rebuild it which will inevitably be needed at some point in its future.   I think, despite the sticker shock of seeing it like that hopefully the owner can look ahead with the car - which after all has done nothing wrong.   It could indeed have been smashed/burnt/crushed/thrown down a quarry.

After all that, though, it would really, really stick in my throat that somebody into 2CVs had done this and that is a stigma I don't think I would ever overcome.
