Whilst researching valve stem oil seals for the 1.4CVH Ford engine, I came across this AA used car guide for the later Mk5 Escort.

http://www.theaa.com/staticdocs/pdf/carreports/AA_REPORTS/FORD_ESCORT_1.6_1.4_CVH_1.3_1.6_CVH_1.4_CVH_U9439.PDF

I'd assumed from the list of maladies that it was published in the late 90s but it's actually from 1994 - when that generation of Escort would have been less than 4 years old.  A lot of the problems seem odd things these days to see on a car that might be barely old enough for its first MOT.  Still, it also suggests that if you're the DIY sort, a Favorit or Maestro is a better bet, not something I expect they'd mention now.

Lots of retro road tests available here:

I wonder how many people still have the free mobile phone they got with their shiny new Nexia: http://www.theaa.com/staticdocs/pdf/carreports/AA_REPORTS/DAEWOO_NEXIA_1.5GLI_R9535.PDF

Regarding the ruling that the use of the word Pikey by Top Gear's presenters was not racist, the BBC news at one reported:

In response, the Traveller Movement said the committee's explanation was "breathtaking in its mendacity".

Of course they did.

The Traveller Movement is very different to the characterful nomads so many of us encounter in day to day life.  Pikey is quite an unpleasant term used to describe some very unpleasant individuals.  That it also tars a community of individuals is perhaps unfair, I doubt they're all chancing shysters but have no evidence to the contrary.

The Traveller community has a very vocal portion who are into nefarious activities, but just because they're the ones that shout loudest does that make it fair to label them all as such?  I would very much like to meet someone from said community who dispels this belief that they are all up to no good and experts at shed raiding but as of yet that hasn't happened to my knowledge.

Scored a couple of 1950s Dinky Lorries and a 1960s Holden in a charity shop yesterday, all for a couple of quid.

Got this bad boy up in the garage a nice old school sun visor but it might look a bit daft in my focus so it's in the garage for now.

The ideal shiter's house now for sale - very close to mine and Craig the Princess in PE14.  Until last year or so there was a fairly spectacular line-up of luxobarge chod out frontIncludes forecourt, petrol pumps, ramps, spray booth and storage for 30+ cars. Anyone know the history of this place?

I've just tried to get the wife interested in moving. I skipped over the bit about the fucked boiler and the cesspit, thirty car storage and a ramp? I said she could put a donkey in the half acre field.

There's a house? Who gives a fuck about the house. I just want the spaaaaaaaaaace. I would kill for all of that. Wonder if they'll throw in the cars?

further to a grump the other day as i had lost a fav earing that was a present, the other half said that it has been found in our bed as i had hoped.

if it had been proper lost, then that would have pissed me off for the rest of the week.

the earring itself isn't worth much, but i've worn them everyday since xmas. plus my friend is struggling with money, like i think many ordinary folks are so when you've got bugger all and having a hard time heating the house, spending a tenner on a gift becomes a big deal.

the earrings have alot of sentimental value.

Hearing aids fitted can now here everything a lot clearer and no mix ups. Trouble is I can now hear a clicking on full lock on corsa.

me ma-in-law had hearing aids in both ears.

when pa-in-law went off on a rant over blacks-foreigners-immigrants-folks on the dole she used to turn them, and hence him, off.

god there are days when i wish i could do that.....

I can hear with out them just no definition and I miss hear words which can be embarrassing, also hard to pin voices in a crowded room. With them in I can define where noises are and what folk are saying. It's fantastic. Nothing is muffled And everything is so clear. Get some wind noise but that's it!

Every silver lining has a cloud  :(

Just had a chimney sweep at the door (chimney sweeps here have some weird mythological connotations, e.g. you're supposed to touch a button when you see one for luck, however owing to my experience of them I'd rather touch cloth...) He's come to inspect our gas installation. Umm, what gas installation? Gas heating, are you Ivan Klopović? Er, no, they're the people my wife bought the house off 12 years ago, when there was no mains gas in the village. Ah, ok, sorry to bother you.

Whuh?

If you are doing the stem seals I've got one of those valve spring compressors to make it easier to do them with the head on..........yours for the postage.

I bought a car radio from ebay, one of those mechless ones that just plays from a memory stick. I didn't expect much as it was £12 including postage from China.  I wanted something small as my recently acquired Wolseley doesn't have room for a full depth radio and I wired it up to two small speakers (can't get anything decent behind the original radio grill in the centre of the dash). I was delighted that it actually worked. The sound is crap, but perfectly in keeping with the car.

Right with you, Vulgalour. Where are these mythical travellers that don't cause any bother and tidy up after themselves?

All the ones I've seen about leave the place in an absolute tip, chuck rubbish and bits of conifers down country lanes and seem to have a different set of driving laws to everybody else.

I've chatted to some who are very pleasant people but their habits leave a lot to be desired.
