I rang up some garage outfit in Stoke today who have an advert on eBay about breaking a Rover 25 for spares.

"How much for the gearbox?"

"£150, but its still in the car, so thats about two hours labour to remove it at, er £35/hour, so, £220 + VAT"

Oh aye....... the customer pays for the removal costs, good system that!!!!       Tell you what guys just leave it in situ.

you could get a gearbox delivered from anywhere for about 45 quid on a pallet, doesnt have to be local

£45 is that the shipping cost? Theres some guy in brum selling brand spanker gearboxes for 150 which was pretty tempting till i looked in my bank account and saw £70 with three weeks of the month left.

That new engine for the Vitara was pallet delivered. Seemed to work well as a delivery method. Can't remember how much it cost mind.

I'd never be that hard on a new car buyer as if it wasn't for them we'd have nothing to buy in future.

I've never owned/bought a new car.  The newest I had was a newish Polo TDI (£6K) and so far it was about the most reliable/cheapest to run car I've had BUT it cost quite a bit in the first place.

Buy cheap and pay for repairs/replacing stuff or buy newer and in most cases pay less in replacing worn out stuff - massive generalisation but that's how I see it.

Hell I paid £12,000 for a 2nd car (Corrado VR6) many years ago when I wasn't even earning that much but it's the only money I had going out so I could afford it. 8)

Typically as the buyer for my taxi took a test drive in yesterday pm it decided to spazz up and wouldn't go past 30 then 15mph.

That'll be the veg oil then, so a slow drive to the garage, top up with diesel and a damned good thrashing saw it right.

Got an email this morning saying it drove back fine. To Torquay!

Yes mate, he checked the boot space and said something about air tanks for the low rider bits he's going to fit.

I would say that most new cars on the road are company cars (or at least bought by people who get a car allowance in their salary). You will get a lot of people who do buy new Fiestas/Corsas etc on finance but I would say that its probably less than 50% of the cars on the road. *

Obvioulsly there has to be enough people buying the new cars to keep the showrooms open but I do not think I know a single person who has a brand new car these days that did not get it through/for work. 20 years ago everyone down the street got a new car every 3 years but these days most cars down the suburban street seem to be between 5-10 yrs old.

Yes; the growth of those car warehousey type places which sell nearly new cars in an environment that vaguely resembles a new car showroom has probably encouraged a lot of people who have a new car mentality to go second hand.

I agree that most people I know who buy brand new are either company car buyers or, curiously, old people.

The only thing better than shiny new parts is shiny new parts where the old one is seriously decayed.

My girlfriends lad started college last week doing a motorsport course. On saturday he mentions that he would like a car to do up for when he turns 17 next year. I tried to convince him that the renault extra pick up that I used to own and has come back on ebay was a good idea but he wasn't having it. Instead he found this.post-5515-0-68872000-1378925992_thumb.jpg

A 1973 MG Midget it's in boxes but looks pretty solid. Not a bad choice for his first car. My other half isn't so impressed she thinks I have brainwashed him into shite

This breaking down less times than expected makes me grin. And also because it's the silliest car in the world
